WWE Prediction Contest
« on: July 08, 2014, 08:16:33 PM »

WWE PREDICTION CONTEST

This was successful in CRW, so with ESPN Sports taking off, it's time for a return.

Many of us enjoy watching wrestling, and this contest is designed to add a fun, competitive element to it. Those wishing to participate can jump in at any time by making their predictions in the latest thread.

I'll likely adapt a "seasonal" format, where we run from the post-Mania PPV (currently Extreme Rules) to Wrestlemania each year, with possible prizes (or at least bragging rights) for the individual with the highest score each season.

THE RULES

1.I will post a thread for each PPV. It will list the announced matches, along with any bonus questions. All you have to do is indicate clearly (such as via bolding, underlining or colour) who you think will win each match.
Alternatively, you can predict a non-finish for any contest by writing "NO CONTEST" or "DRAW" rather than marking either competitor.

2.You may post your predictions at any time after I've posted the thread, and are free to amend your post as more matches are added, or if something happens to change your mind about one of your given predictions.

3.The contest will close when the pre-show starts. Entries/amendments made after this time may result in your entry being disqualified for that PPV.

4.Each card will feature bonus questions, which could be about specifics in a match, or the PPV overall. These will count towards overall scores, and act as one of the tie-breakers.

5.The moderator's (GM Jon) decisions are final.

6.Have fun!

Extras
1.Any matches added DURING a PPV will obviously not be counted towards results, as we couldn't predict them.
2.Cards will be accurate to WWE.com listings. Any dirtsheet rumoured matches will NOT be added.

THE SCORING

Each match is worth a number of points (breakdown usually stated at the bottom of each card). Generally, it works as follows:

Main Events (e.g. WWE WHC Title matches & anything booked as a main draw): 3 points each
All other titles & high profile non-ME contests: 2 points each
Anything else & bonus questions: 1 point each

Updated as of Summerslam... It's all change at the top as Pancho misses out on this round, while similarities in opinions (or predictable WWE booking?) means there's no early gaps forming.

We'll be back with Night of Champions in September.

Updated from NoC.

No change at the top, as Powers not only keeps first place, but doubles his lead out to 2 points. Behind him Franchise takes second outright, while Gooch just about holds on to third place (via match points over Digger).

In other notable changes, Holly continues to rise up the rankings, going from last after our first event (Battleground), to mid-table.

Our next outing is Hell In A Cell in October. Keep your eyes peeled for the game thread.

Updated through HIAC.

Powers keeps his 2 point lead, but now holds it over Digger, who had the joint-best night at HIAC. His fellow night-winner, TJ, also sees himself move up the standings to round out the top three.

Our previous second place holder Franchise drops to joint fourth with a particularly bad set of predictions, while the rest of the order remains relatively unchanged.

Next up is Survivor Series towards the end of November. See you in around a month for that.

Updated for TLC(+S).

Powers' lead shoots out thanks to a very profitable night, including being the only one to correctly predict one of the 3-pointer Main Events. However, he shouldn't feel too comfortable in his lead, as the Royal Rumble is bound to throw up a few opportunities for some unique predictions and for things to completely change.

At the other end of the scale, TJ drops places due to a very poor night in the only other major move.

We'll be back in 2015 for the Royal Rumble, as we start the annual trip down the Road To Wrestlemania.

And that's the Rumble done (with a little fan hostility).

As Wrestlemania looms nearer, it looks ever more likely that Powers will take the first championship victory. His lead is maintained at 8 points thanks to once again being a top-scorer.

We have two movers, first Franchise reclaims the second place he lost at Hell In A Cell through scoring highest at the PPV, while Holly jumps over TJ, who missed the PPV (probably too busy with his rehab to earn himself the HIFL contract).

Next up is "Fast Lane", WWE's replacement for Elimination Chamber. I've no idea what it's about, or what sort of matches to expect.... So join us in February for a venture into the unknown!

While there's no change at the top (Powers' well-built lead holding out to keep him in first), Fastlane has lead to many changes up and down the standings.

Most notably Gooch jumps over both Franchise and Digger, claiming the second spot while taking a good bite out of Powers' safety buffer. Meanwhile Holly drops down with an almost 100% wrong night (which would have been a first), her place now occupied by TJ, who also had a fairly profitable night.

There's only one event left, and it's the big season finale in Wrestlemania. Given that the biggest event of the year tends to involve several Main Events, it's far from a certainty when I ask: Who will win our first year's competition? (Ok, it will have been 9 months, but we're counting it as Season 1)...

Be back here in 5 weeks to find out!

And there we have it... Season one ends in a bang with Wrestlemania..

Despite a poor performance, the lead is just too much to overcome, leaving GM POWERS as our first winner.

Behind him, DIGGER scores highly to tie up GOOGH for second place, making both men co-runner-up.

A big thank you to everyone who participated thus-far. The full table at the top shall remain in place until Extreme Rules, when SEASON TWO will begin... If I may be so bold, I predict that with a full compliment of PPV's next years winner may break the 100 point barrier.

Excellent work, Corbin. This is a really fun part of the boards. You're doing a great job. Looking forward to season 2!

SHOCK TWIST!!!

In entering this past seasons scores into a database I discovered a mathematical error..

Somewhere along the line I did some adding up wrong to this point... Digger has 13 bonus points not 14...

This means the top 3 is:

WINNER: POWERS
RUNNER UP: GOOCH
THIRD: DIGGER

One mathematical error in the whole game... I'm pretty impressed at that.

(For those interested: I'm going to keep a track of running scores via the database both for each season and "career" total)

SEASON TWO BEGINS!!!

We start our second year the same way as the first... With a lot of scores that are the same. This leaves FIVE people tied on the same score for first, while "last" place is only three points back.

Payback is PPV #2 of the season, where Rusev and John Cena will meet in an I Quit match for the United States Championship (as announced during Extreme Rules). See you then!

UPDATED AS OF PAYBACK 2015

Franchise wins the night, and with that shoots himself up the table into fifth place. Around him the table starts to stretch, with Payback creating much more variety in scoring compared to our opener at Extreme Rules.

At the top we now have two tied for the lead... Last season's winner Powers and runner up Gooch... Who once again are showing they're in-tune with the WWE's thought processes (or really lucky with their guessing). Can anyone break up their stranglehold?

We're back again in TWO WEEKS for a BONUS ROUND! WWE has chosen reinstate Elimination Chamber as a Network-Exclusive PPV, which means I'm already planning my Chamber system in order to create even more chaos in the table...

For the first time in what seems like an age, Powers is not top of the WWE Prediction Contest Leaderboard!

While he may have scored joint-highest in match points, his inability to pick up any bonus points puts him just one point behind Gooch at the top of the table.

Talon takes the honours on the night by way of match points, with his score of 7 points matched by  Gooch and Tritch (albeit with more bonus points). At the other end of things, Franchise follows up his previous round win with the lowest score this time out.

While things are starting to string out a little, there's still only a single "secondary title" score (2 points) between the top three places.

We are back again in just two weeks for our third PPV in quick succession... And it's the first opportunity to pick up an "Extra" tiebreaker. We shall see you again for Money In The Bank very soon!

Updated as of Money In The Bank 2015.

Our second low-scoring event in a row, with majority of entrants failing to score even half of the maximum. In spite of this, it was yet another fairly close-run affair when it comes to the actual results. It's Jon that profits most, his clear 2-point victory being enough to move him up into the top-three, while Holly slides down the table through some against-the-grain choices.

The next event is Battleground, which will be the 1 year anniversary of the Corbin WWE Prediction Contest's run on the ESPN Sports Sims boards. We hope to see you then, and wish you luck in achieving some more high-scoring nights in the events to come.

WWE Battleground sees status quo return to the WWEPC, as Powers regains the top position on the leaderboard.

It's Talon and Pancho that profit most, both securing 7-point hauls, but Powers 6-point second place is enough to shoot him back to the top as Gooch is only able to score 3, dropping down to the third place position.

We return at the end of August with SUMMERSLAM, an event that seems to regularly feature multiple main-event level contests, so a definite chance to score big!

While they did say this on Raw, the Battleground PPV section on WWE.com lists the result as a "No Contest" (which is how I took the outcome on the night), so for now the results stand.

Summerslam lived up to the prediction contest hype, with our highest scores of the season thus-far.

JON was by far our winner on the night, his 19 points including a perfect 5 on the bonuses. His nearest challenger was GOOCH, 4 points behind with a score of 15, while the lowest scorer was FRANCHISE, who managed "only" 10 points. Current series leader POWERS scored 11, putting him in the lower half of the results.

Adding those scores to our leaderboard we see a big change at the top. JON's big score means he goes from 2 points behind, to having a 4 point lead. GOOCH also leapfrogs POWERS, putting our reigning champion back in 3rd and 6 points off the pace.
The only other change to proceedings is DIGGER and FRANCHISE swapping places, now in 7th and 8th respectively.

September brings NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS, where all titles are on the line, which should once again bring a lot of points up for grabs in the race to be crowned Season 2 Prediction Contest Champion.

Night Of Champions is in the books.

DIGGER and GOOCH top scored, with a whopping 15 points each (although DIGGER took top spot with greater match points). This was double that of our lowest scorers, TRITCH and PANCHO, who each got 7.
(Fun fact: after half of last night's matches had been completed, PANCHO was still yet to score a single point.)
We also had two S2 debuts, with METRO and TJ registering their first entries this year, and doing as well as each other with 8 points apiece.

As for the overall scores: JON drops six points to GOOCH, with last-seasons runner-up now top by 2, while POWERS' deficit is cut to three as he looks to retain his crown.
Elsewhere the poor nights from TRITCH and PANCHO see them drop down the board (from 6th-to-8th and 5th-to-6th respectively), with DIGGER taking over 5th, while HOLLY rises to 7th.

Next month is HELL IN A CELL, where we already know that The Beast Incarnate, BRRROCK LEESSSNARRR, with take on THE UNDERTAKER inside the demonic structure.
(NB: I might be away the night of the PPV. Should this be the case, the contest will still run with me updating the results on the Monday as and when I catch up.)

Updates as of HIAC.

WE HAVE OUR FIRST 100%! It goes to GOOCH, as he secured a maximum 18 for match points.
However, it wasn't a perfect night, as the surprise return of Alberto Del Rio and lack of Dudley table use caught everyone off-guard.
Everyone else scored around the same, with the lowest scorers getting a still impressive 14 points.

On the overall table, GOOCH's lead extends to 5 points, while JON stays 1 point ahead of POWERS in second and third respectively. DIGGER leapfrogs TALON on match points, while HOLLY and FRANCHISE benefit from the absences of TRITCH and PANCHO in this month's contest.
And interestingly, for what I believe is the first time in a while, we have no ties at all in the current overall scoring.

Next up is the Thanksgiving tradition that is SURVIVOR SERIES. This will mark the 25th anniversary of The Undertaker's debut, and should no doubt provide plenty of high-scoring opportunities in the event's namesake elimination matches.

UPDATED AS OF SURVIVOR SERIES.

GOOCH & POWERS share the night's spoils, ending up tied on 15 points. At the other end of the scale, FRANCHISE managed a meager 4.. Not helped by him not filling in the entire set of predictions.

As for the overall scores, GOOCH breaks the 100 point barrier, now sitting with a total of 104 at the top of our table. His lead is extended to 6 (a one-point increase), now over a joint second JON and POWERS.
Nobody else changed places, although some gaps between scores have changed. The biggest of note being the gap between our top three and the next competitor, which is currently at 10 points!

Can anyone make up the deficit? Will Gooch manage to hold on to his lead? or can Powers come back to retain his crown? Only time will tell.

By my reckoning we have four PPVs left this Season. Next up is the final one of 2015: TLC. Described as the "WWE's Demolition Derby", will it do the same for our scores? I'll see you next month to find out!

UPDATED FOR TLC.

FRANCHISE makes the biggest turnaround of the season thus-far, going from a 4 point last place last time out to securing a 100% MATCH POINTS SCORE on the way to a 14 point top-scoring night.

Most of our other competitors came close, only falling one match off also securing maxes.

Overall, there's only two changes to note. Firstly, TALON leapfrogs DIGGER for 4th place thanks to a single point lead. The bigger interest, however, is likely to be that POWERS not only takes 2nd place outright (relegating former-tie JON into third), but also managed to take a point off GOOCH, decreasing the latter's lead to only 5 points.

We now take a 6 week break over Christmas and into the New Year... But once we get to 2016 things will start to heat up. For on JANUARY 24th The Road To Wrestlemania begins.... WITH THE ROYAL RUMBLE!

30 men, 1 prize... And a whole lot of prediction opportunity.

UPDATED AS OF ROYAL RUMBLE.

Reigning champion POWERS is the King of the Rumble, narrowly edging out TJ (who scored 11 points, all matches no bonus).
There were also three Prediction Contest debuts, with T-BONE the most successful, scoring two more than BLACK DEATH and REBEL. Welcome to all three.

As for the overall table... GOOCH's lead is cut to just three points by POWERS, while the gap to third place (JON) is extended to seven. It's looking increasingly likely that we'll see the same pair of names in the top two, but the question is, which way around?
The only actual move on the table was DIGGER jumping TALON, reversing last month's change.

Fastlane in February is our final stop before Wrestlemania... We'll see you then for our penultimate event of Season Two.

UPDATED FOR FASTLANE.

Or should I say PredictablePre-WrestlemaniaPPV 2016. In a Season high we had FIVE people one score short of a match-maximum, two of which were a further bonus away from the first full maximums.

It means, of course, that there's no real change in the standings. GOOCH remains three points ahead of POWERS at the top, setting up a tense finish between last years 1st & 2nd finishers. Which way around will they fall this year?
(There is an outside chance of JON taking the crown, but at 9 points behind it'd take some bold predictions and a bit of luck for him to win... That or a no-show by the top two)

Our final PPV of the season is, as always, WRESTLEMANIA.... Some matches are already known (OMG SHANE-O-MAC RETURN!)... While others are yet to be announced.. But as always, join us again PPV week to make your picks.

Wrestlemania 32 is in the books!

Our top six were the only ones to participate in the final round. TALON took the night, but scored only half the available match points. DIGGER was our lowest scorer, picking up only 5 points across the night.

As for the overall...

POWERS RETAINS THE CORBIN'S WWE PREDICTION CONTEST CROWN!

POWERS managed to out-score GOOCH by 4 points, jumping over him at the top of the table to retain his title by just ONE SINGLE POINT.

JON takes third, followed by TALON, DIGGER & HOLLY.

The full final table can be seen in the first post.

I'd like to thank everybody who has taken part over the past year. Now I'll take stock and see how things stand.

My question for you all: Would you like me to continue with Season 3?

If yes, please fill out the following survey:

1 - Should Network Specials (e.g. "Beast Of The East") be added to the contest if cards are pre-announced?
2 - Should NXT Takeover specials be added to the contest?
3 - Any changes you'd like to the way the contest is run?

1 - Should Network Specials (e.g. "Beast Of The East") be added to the contest if cards are pre-announced?
- I think the Network special shows should count, yes.

2 - Should NXT Takeover specials be added to the contest?
- No, I don't think these should count, as you would have to be an NXT follower to play, where the network specials are still easy to pick if you watch regular WWE programming.

3 - Any changes you'd like to the way the contest is run?
- No, You're a great mod for this, and you deserve all sorts of praises!  WOOT WOOT
I need to make you a dope graphic, or someone else should... either way, Keep it up Leon!  You Da Man!

Great job with this Leon. It really is fun to play and I wish more our our members would get on board and play through the entire season.

1 - Should Network Specials (e.g. "Beast Of The East") be added to the contest if cards are pre-announced?
- I think they should, yes.

2 - Should NXT Takeover specials be added to the contest?
- I think they should, yes. I saw Talon's point, but I don't think you have to really pay too much attention to NXT to be able to throw up predictions. They do I think 4 takeovers a year. I think it would be fun to have those in our predictions.

3 - Any changes you'd like to the way the contest is run?
I think Powers and Gooch should start out with negative 10 points. That is all though.  :P

To answer your questions:

My question for you all: Would you like me to continue with Season 3?

YES

1 - Should Network Specials (e.g. "Beast Of The East") be added to the contest if cards are pre-announced?

So long as there are 4+ announced matches, yes.

2 - Should NXT Takeover specials be added to the contest?

I'd say no. This is the WWE Prediction Contest, not the NXT Prediction Contest. But I won't pitch a fit if you decide to include it.

3 - Any changes you'd like to the way the contest is run?

Nah bro, sometimes simple is fun. You do a great job with this.

So, in an off-season update the responses to my questions:

1 - Network Specials
It's a unanimous YES to Network Specials being added to the prediction contest. So long as we have enough matches announced to make it worthwhile you'll see Network Special events pop up for your predicting (should be ok though - BITE had 7, MSG had 6).

In an addition to this, if WWE does the King of the Ring special there will not only be a prediction contest for it, but I'll add it as a tie-breaker on par with Rumble & MITB for predicting the overall winner.
(NOTE: in the case of the KOTR working like last year only the Network Special portion will count as predicable, to avoid easy points through potential pre-taped SD matches).

In a further addition to this, I'm going to be keeping a close eye on details about the WWE CRUISERWEIGHT SERIES format, as it might work out as a nice bonus round to the competition. Obviously if it's pre-taped it won't be included, but I hope there's at least some aspects of it done as live Network Specials.

2 - NXT Takeovers
Currently they're pretty split, with 3 "Yes" and 2 "no".

Jon made a very good case to counter Talon's point about "non-followers", while I'd like to briefly address Power's by saying that NXT is a WWE product/brand, so technically it'd fit under this banner.

A thought I had is dropping the points scale so all title matches at NXT Takeovers are worth 2 points, while everything else is worth 1. This makes it less harmful to the overall standings, but gives enough that there's still difference in the match values at NXT events.

I'll leave this one open to discussion for the moment, as I'd like to know more opinions before I commit either way. For the record, I lean adding them (thus the question existing to gauge opinions) as they're effectively Network Specials, just focused on the Development brand.

3 - Any Other Stuff
Glad everyone likes things the way they are overall.

I do somewhat agree with Bone's "more bonuses", especially when I have occasionally held back to avoid repetition when they could have been suitable - For example, when there's more than one multi-man or tag team match, I tend to only give one "who's on the losing end/who scores the winning fall".
We might see a few more of these, as well as some new ones as I've been evaluating my bonus topics in order to improve going forwards. Definitely want to make it so there's plenty of ways to score points during the season.

SEASON 3 HAS BEGUN!

Only a 4 point spread across the Payback predictions, with GOOCH & BLACK DEATH sharing the spoils at the top.

The only thing "Of note" from the night actually came from the show itself, with the no-contest through injury in the tag match having an impact on the overall results... As GOOCH and BD had actually picked different ways. We wish Enzo a speedy recovery.

We return fairly quickly with Extreme Rules later this month, headlined Styles vs Reigns II confirmed from the end of the PPV.

That was on Raw. Didn't happen the night of the show... It didn't happen. It was a no contest as far as anyone knew at the conclusion of Payback.

Not that it means anything, but the wikipedia page still has it as a no contest.
