"Miss Shay, I wanted to reach out to the Athletic Department at Nebraska. Coach Murdoch is the man in-charge there. If he's defensive minded, I'd love to speak to him about potentially coming to Kansas City as our defensive coordinator. Please reach out and let me know if this is a conversation we can have."

"Doc, thanks for taking my call. As my assistant had informed your AD, I'm looking for a new Defensive Coordinator here in KC. I figured since you won the national title, was named coach of the year, I'd be a fool not to give you a call and gauge your interest.

If this is something you are interested in, could you tell me a bit about your coaching philosophy?"

We hit hard, we move fast, and we play with discipline.  4-3 sets, zone coverage, and an emphasis on using the DE's to generate pressure so that the backers can make plays on the ball carriers.    We play aggressive, and when its all said and done we look to force as many turnovers and negative plays as possible.

"I'm not expecting you to be an expert on my team, as you obviously have your own program to think of, but I hope you might have a passing familiarity. How do you think you could get the best out of existing personnel in Kansas City?

Alternatively, how do you get the best out of the players in your program?"

Yeah, I've been focused on winning a championship here at Nebraska, so I don't know your personnel very well, but when it comes to my own team, I work their asses off.  We start early, we finish late.  We don't take days off, we hit it hard, we hit it until we can't hit anymore, and then when they've recovered we start it all over again. Repetition breads success.

Total domination.  I want to climb the ranks to head coach and eventually retire as a hall of fame Coach.  Pretty simple, really.

...You do know the majority of colleges run spreads exclusively.  I'm used to having to go nickle or dime to stop the pass.. You provide me with 4 quality corners and I'll be happy to run a dime set on long distance downs.

I believe part of my career has been hampered by poor GM'ing.  GM TJ ghosted me and left our team for dead, and that hurt my career.  I love to coach, love working with the secondary, and love to run a primarily nickle system with balanced aggression level, I want my secondary to be nimble and talented, and in the front seven I like to have run stopping front seven guys, with a dangerous DE who can rush the passer.

"I know you partially answered this already, so I'm just looking for a more complete picture. The nickel is considered to be poor against the run, so how do you as a coach adjust for that? And what adjustment would you need from your front office?"

With more run-defense oriented linebackers, and by that I mean bigger guys, stronger guys, better tackling guys... look at the St. Paul nickle this year.  I believe if you commit to the run with the right personnel you can still stop the run from the Nickle.  On short yardage situations I still throw the 4-3 out, as long as the 3rd LB is good enough to make plays.

"Alright. We had by most metrics, the worst defense last year. I need you to be the guy to change the culture of this defense. I get the sense that stability is important to you. I'd like to assure you that I am under contract here for two more seasons, so I'm not apt to leave cold. So if you're willing, I'd like to offer you a 2 year, 5 million dollar deal to join us. What do you say?"

If you want a new culture, you've got the right man.  Let's get to work.  Do you have strong leadership on defense?  If so I'd like to get right to work speaking with that person during the off-season to build some rapport.

"Miss Shay, can you call up the representation for Roger Wolf please."

...

"Thanks for taking my call, I hope everything is going well. I'm excited to sign Roger to our squad, I know our scouts and coaches liked him.

Anyway, I am aware of what the player's union had originally been working on, and what other teams have done in this process. This is what I'd like to do here. 3 years, 6 million base salary, and a 3 million signing bonus. I know other teams were making it rain. We're gonna promote the heck out of Roger, so that he can also benefit from the sponsorship deals that will be pouring in. I will also use one of our stadium's licensed tracks specifically for Wolf, so that we can maximize his branding potential. Do we have a deal?"
