Understood Coach. I'll talk to both Carrillo and Clary, try to get a little more out of them. I'll get you get out there to practice. Can you send your brother in when you see him?

*****

Hi Jay, thanks for your time. I wanted to speak with you because I've received a request from GM Gooch to allow you to interview for his head coaching vacancy in St. Paul.

First, I just want to say I love your work here and want nothing more than for you to stay. However, I don't want to do it over your objection. He last thing I want to do is hold your career back.

So, what do you think? Would you want to take a meeting, or are you happy where you are?

Honestly I'm really torn.

When I saw on ESPN that St. Paul was asking you to speak to me, I was excited.  Being a head coach is my dream.

I thought a few weeks ago that I wasn't ready for it because the team wasn't taking to me like they do with Jon, but then you talked to me and boosted my confidence, so I felt ready to be a head coach.

...at the same time, I feel like we have a job to do here, and I want to see it through.

So I would like to interview with St. Paul, but it would honestly take a big offer and a really big vision for me to leave here, or agree to leave here after the season, that is..

I appreciate you saying "leave here after this season".

I'll talk with GM Gooch and work out the particulars.

You're welcome Jay. Talk to you later.

*****

Can I speak with Ralph Wheatley please.

*****

Ralph, thanks for your time. I just wanted to give you a small piece of advice. When the fans get their pitchforks out, you just need to take it in stride. You missed a kick, and their pissed. You go out there and make a bunch of kicks, especially ones that get us "W's"....they'll be buying your drinks at the bar in no time flat.

We've got your back. Don't forget that.

The press and fans can be brutal. Just pop in your ear buds, double down on practice, and the kicks will come. Have a good day in practice.

Thanks for coming to see me. I wanted to check in with you. Tell me, how do you think your rookie season is going?

That is factually correct.  You are the starter, and you are putting up 'decent' numbers.  However, just like I was saying to the whole team last week, sometimes you have to dig a little deeper than just the bare facts to see the true story.

Let me tell you a little bit about my philosophy as a General Manager.  There is one thing, and one thing only that I ask of everyone that suits up on a team of mine.  All that I ask is that you give 100%.  I don't mean just during the downs that you play in the game.  I mean on the sidelines.  I mean in practice.  I mean in the film room.  I mean on the team bus.

Leonard, you got here because you're talented.  Nobody disputes that.  What I've noticed, and what Coach Rudino has noticed is that you appear to not be giving it your all in practice.  That is just not acceptable, and here is why.  All that natural talent that got you here to the HIFL?  That's enough to get you a spot on a roster.  That's enough to get you some time as a starter.  But it is NOT enough to ensure that you keep your starting spot.  It is NOT enough to ensure you have a successful career, with Championships to your name.  It is NOT enough to even dream about the Hall of Fame.

Because next year, and the year after, and the year after, there will be another Leonard Carrillo.  He will have all the natural talent that you do.  But he will have a leg up on you, because he will have the drive and the work ethic to give 100% ALL THE TIME.  Where you take it easy in practice, he'll be hitting those dummies like it is the Impact Bowl itself.  Where your eyes might glaze over during film study, he'll be taking notes like his is studying for the SAT's.  Carrillo 2.0 will go far with that attitude.  His ceiling is so high that it can't even be seen by the naked eye.

Yes, you have natural talent.  YOU can be Carrillo 2.0.....but only by putting in the hard work.  Every.  Single.  Day.  I really hope you take these words to heart.  I want to see you anchor the offensive line for the next decade, and hoist that Impact Bowl trophy.  I don't want your name to be remembered with other naturally gifted athletes, who just didn't put in the work.

You feel what I'm saying Leonard?

Actually, that is exactly what I am doing Leonard.  As the General Manager of this team, it is my job and my duty to question the work ethic of anyone that looks like they are half assing it, whether it is in the games, or in your case in practice.  Let me be very, very clear.  Bad attitudes, and a lazy work ethic will NOT be tolerated here.  Now, or ever.

I would think long and hard about what you do next here Leonard.  What started as a simple request by me for you to work harder and give it your all, has turned into quite a bit more due to the poor attitude that you've copped to your boss.  If you simply say "I'll work harder out there", and proceed to do so, we will have no issues whatsoever.  Anything less than that, and this conversation will take a hard turn that neither of us will like very much.

Now then.  I expect you to work harder out there in practice, and give your coaches and teammates the respect that they deserve.  Is that understood?

If I don't practice hard, I don't practice hard man. If I'm playing good, I'm good. I mean simple as that. It ain't about that... I mean it's... It's not about that... At all. You know what I'm saying I mean... But it's...it's easy to, to talk about... It's easy to sum it up when you're just talking about practice. We're sitting in here, and I'm supposed to be the starter, and we in here talking about practice. I mean, listen, we're talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, we talking about practice. Not a game. Not, not Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last. Not the game, but we're talking about practice, man. I mean, how silly is that? And we talking about practice. I know I supposed to be there so I'm there. I know I'm supposed to lead by example... I know that... And I do on game day..  But we're talking about practice man. What are we talking about? Practice? We're talking about practice, man. [laughter from the media crowd] We're talking about practice. We're talking about practice. We ain't talking about the game.  We're talking about practice, man. When you come to the arena, and you see me play, you see me play don't you? You've seen me give everything I've got, right? But we're talking about practice right now. We talking about practice.

If I'm grading your Allen Iverson impersonation, then I'm giving you a solid B+. But if I'm grading your attitude, then you get a big fat D.

So, when your sitting on the bench second string behind Yazzie, I want you to remember that this could all have been avoided. When Coach tells me that you're taking things seriously, NOT putting yourself before the team, and working your ass off in practice....ONLY THEN will you come close to re-earning the starting job you so carelessly squandered.

Now get out of my office and go to practice. Simple as THAT.

*****

Miss Callie, I'll be in my office looking over a few things. If anyone needs me, that's where I'll be.

You're suspended for the week, and your game check will be donated to charity. Would you care to make this worse, or will you have some common sense and just quit while you're behind?

Suspended?  Come on Old Man, get on the horn and find me a new home, I don't want to play for your you anymore, you gonna get all flipped out because you don't think I practice hard enough?!  Man, I play hard, I go hard, and we're in first place, and I've only allowed a couple sacks.  If that's not good enough, then I don't want to be here anymore, Suck on that!

I hope you enjoy splinters in your ass, because that's all you have in your future. I'm not rewarding you with a fresh start somewhere else. No, you're going to be suspended as I just told you. Then, when the suspension is over, you're going to sit behind Yazzie. And you're going to show up to practice, AND WORK YOUR DAMN ASS OFF. If you slack off, or are a problem in the locker room, then you'll forfeit that weeks game check to charity as well.

You may be a natural athlete, and football player, but you must be dumber than a box of rocks if you think you can talk this way to your boss and get things your way.

It didn't have to be this way Lenny. Remember that this is YOUR doing. And you're the only one who can un-do it. You do that by apologizing to me, and proving yourself on the practice field. Yes, we're talking about practice. Now, are you leaving voluntarily, or do you need further damage to be done to your reputation by needing security to escort you out?

I'm excited to hear that, but don't sell yourself short! It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest for GM Gooch to send an offer your way.

While your here, I need to update you on what's gone down since you left. I asked Jon to update me on the rookies progress, and he mentioned that Carrillo was lazy, and self centered in practice. I called him in here and....it didn't go well. He went on a rant about practice, said some very unpleasant things, then demanded a trade.

It ended with him demoted to second string, suspended for a week, and an edict from me to work hard in practice and not be a distraction to the team, otherwise he'll forfeit his game check and not get any closer to seeing the field. So, when he returns to practice next week, I need you and Jon to put him through a tough practice, and see how he responds.

Alright, can I speak with Head Coach Rudino please.

*****

Well Coach, you can see what moves we've made at the deadline.  Not the flashiest of signings, but I feel as though with Carter and Arreola in place of Roberts and Styles, we've upgraded our line quite a bit.  Also, with Oliver back in the fold, we have the best FB in the game to help open up holes for Robles to finally break out.

As I am sure you also know, Carrillo proved to be a bigger problem than we thought, and is suspended for the week.  Yaz will get the start in his place.  He'd had plenty of playing time in our system, so it shouldn't be that big of a shock to the system.

We do need a new O-Line Captain.  I think that Bob Tubbs is the obvious selection here.

Thoughts?

It varies.  We run 60% on first and 10, 80 on first and short, and 50 on first and long.

75 on 2nd and short, 50 on 2nd and long

80 on 3rd and short, 15 on 3rd and long

95% on the goal line.

Well, that was certainly not the usual brand of Outlaw football. Low scoring, defensive games are not the general blueprint for us, but I'm proud to stand here before you victorious. And guess what? At the hand....uh, foot....of Ralph Wheatley. Just like I said, he'd be given a chance to redeem himself, and this week he made good on that. I hope the Outlaws faithful are as pleased with this turn of events as I am, and that they embrace our kicker with the same zeal that they called for his head last week. #EmbraceWheatley

Now, regarding trade madness...I'll only comment on our moves. I'm proud to announce that we've upgraded our offensive line, and managed to bring the best fullback in football back to Tombstone. I believe that these moves will help us to shore things up, and get us that Impact Bowl trophy.

Questions?

John Cope came up big this week blocking a punt that set up the game-leading field goal in the second half, who else would you like to see step up this week against Oakland to get another win and keep pace with Pearl Harbor?

That's the thing about Tombstone football. It could be anybody. Wheatley could boot another big kick. Cope, Cuevas, Pullen, Johnson....they could snag a big INT. Alvarado, Roby, de la Rosa, Tyler...they could hit a big sack. Robles, Tibbetts, Holiday, Randolph...any one of them could break a tackle or two for a huge gain. It could be any of those guys, it could be one of the guys I didn't mention. We focus on being a team first and formostly here in Tombstone. It'll be somebody, that's all that matters.

Why did the team start Yazzie this week at Center?

Leonard Carrillo was suspended for 1 week and his game check was donated to charity for disciplinary issues. That is the most that I'm going to comment on this issue at this time.

Any other questions?

This weeks game was played in terrible circumstances, in what is being called the "Dust Bowl" ...Do you feel that your owner should consider moving the team into a dome due to the desserts' harsh weather in the summer?  The wind, the sandstorm, and the heat caused many fans to leave at halftime, and clearly the weather effected the quarterbacks and the overall score, would you agree?

Firstly, yes I'd obviously agree that the weather played a part in the game. But that's football. Games played in ice, snow, wind, heat....we're more reliable than the postal service. We play the game. Period.

Now regarding a dome stadium....lets be fair about things. One dust storm, does not a pattern make. This is my 3rd season here, and this is the first time that this has happened. I'm sure Mr. Crowley has taken note of these circumstances, and he will take whatever steps are needed for his staff, his players, and the people of Tombstone.

Ugly, but a win... At this point in the season, we take them how we can get them.

Exactly.  I feel like homefield advantage was HUGE for us this week.

Any notes for the game, or do the conditions mean we really can't draw very many conclusions about what we saw?

I haven't had a chance to look at the weather channel today....do you happen to have any idea what it looks like for gameday against Oakland?

I hope that it settles down for us, that's for sure.

Carrillo's suspension is over, so I expect he'll be in practice this week.  Let me know if he's working harder, and if his attitude has shifted for the better.

Yaz is the starter, with Carrillo backing him up, until such a time that Carrillo shows the work ethic and the respect we expect from a starter on this team.

They are weak on offense this year.  Alicea at QB now, and a struggling Christopher Allen at RB... I think we can hold them to few enough points that we can win even if they bring their strong defense back to life.
