TALON WILKINSON ANNOUNCES PURCHASE OF THE HIGH IMPACT FOOTBALL LEAGUE!

In the wake of the National Baseball League's untimely demise, highly praised Commissioner, Talon Wilkinson has announced that he has invested his fortune acquired in the sale of the NBL to purchase the 4 year old High Impact Football League!

The HIFL, which consists of 12 teams from all reaches of the US, was struggling financially, but will look to thrive under the same fan friendly environment that Wilkinson's NBL worked so well in over the past few years.  Wilkinson released the following statement via social media earlier today.

"Football fans rejoice!  The HIFL will not be shutting its doors, I have decided to take Monique Harpo's money and turn it into a stimulus package to revitalize the High Impact brand of Football we all know and love!  12 Teams, endless possibilities!"

Fans did indeed rejoice as season ticket sales for all 12 HIFL franchises immediately began to rise.  Wilkinson also announced that with his purchase of the league he would install the same GM structure that the NBL employed.

FORMER NBL MANAGER JIMMY EUBANKS ANNOUNCES HE WILL TRY HIS HAND AT FOOTBALL!

As the HIFL accepts applications for free agent coaches before the start of Season 5, one well known baseball manager has thrown his name into the hat.  Former Rhode Island Whigs Manager Jimmy Eubanks announced via his twitter account that he will leave the baseball world and try his hand at coaching Football.  Eubanks said:

"A motivator is a motivator, in Baseball or in any other sport.  Yous guys forget that I can motivate anybody, any place, any time.  It's gonna be fun to get my hands into something new."

Eubanks is one of many "unknowns" coming into the coaching search this season, a full breakdown of available coaches can be found here!

FREE AGENT OUTLOOK: QUARTERBACKS

16 Quarterbacks have filed for Free Agency this off season, and with teams always looking to improve one of the most important positions in the game it is always important to take a good look at the crop of players and who could help turn a franchise around, or even step into the back up role to provide depth, or an arm for the future.

This season two names stand out as interesting prospects, Gerry Teeter played 3 seasons of HIFL football, but only attempted 39 passes in those 3 seasons.  Last season he was not signed to a contract and instead left the league to play a season in Canada, but after a "Canadian Bowl" run he has decided to return to the HIFL.  At 30 years old the former Harvard standout looks to use his high football IQ and Accuracy to good use, but can he get a starting job?  Many reports say that if he is not signed as a starter, he will return to Canada.

On the flip side of that coin there is intriguing prospect Allen Ayala.  Ayala was drafted out of Tennessee last season in the 4th round by D.C. and as a rookie he started all 16 games. He completed 58.5% of his passes for 2541 yards 9 TDs and 9 INTs for a QB rating of 71.8; The Cobras have the first chance to re-sign Ayala, but many believe that Cobra's QB Michael Royal a 3rd round draft pick a year before Ayala is ready to take his shot as the teams QB of the future.

FREE AGENT OUTLOOK: RUNNING BACKS

34 Running Backs will be available in the Free Agency this off season but the biggest storyline coming to GM's attention is the rivalry between 30 year old Terrance Holcomb and 26 year old William Swift.

Both players were members of the DC Cobras last season in what was originally supposed to be a 3 headed monster (w/ Herbert Smith) but Holcomb ended the year with 206 carries for 914 yards and 3 TDs, Herbert Smith got 141 touches for 682 yards and 4 TDs and the duo combined for 59 catches, 595 yards, and 3 TDs (all by Holcomb) leaving 4 year back up William Swift with only 1 run and 1 catch in his contract year.  When DC Owner Hershel Kiss offered Swift "first team reps" in an attempt to re-sign him, Holcomb was furious and opted not to re-sign after his 1 year stint with the Cobras as well.  Now both Swift and Holcomb battle for the title of "top free agent back" most analysts give Holcomb the strength and agility advantage, but Swift is undoubtedly faster and has the higher football IQ.  Both players catch balls well out of the backfield, but questions about Holcomb's endurance and aging legs could make Swift the more sought after RB when free agency opens up.  Swift, who has been known to have a bit of an attitude when upset has only had one season where he saw any action on the field, in S3 he got 166 carries and ran for 800 yards and 8 TDs while during that same year Holcomb spent the year on the Oakland bench tallying 3 carries for 9 yards.

FREE AGENT OUTLOOK: WIDE RECEIVERS

Hector Houser (28) is shrugging off the speculation that he is on the backside of his career and is now "past his prime."  The #8 Overall pick in the HIFL Season 1 Expansion draft, Houser has spent his all 4 of his HIFL seasons in Lincoln and burst onto the scene in season 1 with 95 catches for 1356 yards and 9 touchdowns.  He followed it up with an 84 catch year for 1161 yards and 10 touchdowns, but then failed to top 1000 yards in season 3 despite 82 catches and 8 touchdowns.  Ironically enough, Houser was named to the pro bowl for the first time in Season 3 despite it being his worst personal season.  This past season, Houser caught 65 balls for 735 yards and 5 touchdowns but he did not re-sign with the Lincoln Pride, instead he decided to test free agency.

Houser is considered by some as the top Wide Receiver target in free agency, but others have looked at 30 year old David Beasley who finished his first season as a full time starter this year with 62 catches 796 yards and 2 TDs along with Former Oakland Slot specialist Brian Beckwith (31) is hoping to prove that he is back from the Torn Achilles Tendon that cost him his entire season last year.  Beckwith's first season rewarded him with a Pro Bowl after he caught 102 passes for 1796 yards and 13 touchdowns.  In season 2 he was relegated to the bench due to a disagreement among the coaching staff, but in Season 3 he returned to the starting lineup and hauled in 78 passes for 1195 yards and 9 touchdowns.

If GM's are looking to pursue a Wide Receiver in Free Agency who isn't in his late 20's/early 30's one potentially appealing option is Richard Ray, the 25 year old former 5th overall pick who is expecting to call a new city home after spending his first 3 years in Missouri where he has amassed 208 catches, 2537 yards, and 15 touchdowns, but his 46 drops over that same span of time are troublesome to some scouts.

The passing game is a big part of HIFL offenses, and needless to say teams will be looking to strengthen their WR corps through free agency as well as the draft.

GM METRO VOWS NOT TO APPLY, TELLS OWNERS TO COME TO HIM!

With the folding of the NBL and Highly respected GM Jon having already accepted the tall task of trying to rebuild the Cobras of DC, fans of the eleven other franchises are eagerly looking to see who their owner will task with leading the team heading in to Season 5.

While each team has already had at least one prospective General Manager express an interest in the team, one name has been noticeably absent from the application process according to a source within the HIFL league office, GM Metro. While often unconventional in his methods, his track record of leading the Zephyr’s to the top record in the NBL in both seasons, along with his ability to develop talent and build through youth has fans of all eleven teams salivating at the thought of bringing him to take the helm of their franchise, regardless of the expectations.

GM Metro has stated that he is interested in taking his talents to the HIFL but he is awaiting an owner to come to him with an offer, as opposed to approaching an owner about working for him. With the first round of applications started; ownership groups of at least three teams are considering approaching Metro about a job and are currently evaluating what sort of package to offer him to entice him to join their franchise. Rumor is that at least one of the three is not only prepared to make him the largest financial offer; but also the title of Executive Vice President – Football Operations.

His wants are currently unknown but knowing his approach in the NBL he will certainly be looking for some latitude in regards to personnel and the ability to manage the team as he sees fit with limited to no interference from the ownership group. It is almost a given that Metro will seek a guarantee as far as term which is not seen to be an issue as he is not expected to leave a team once joining; having spurned multiple offers from other owners in the NBL for “greener pastures” to stick in Montreal.

While some have suggested that Metro may sit out Season 5 to further survey the land, it is expected that he will be leading a team at some point. He has already begun making phone calls around the league to speed up the learning curve around "American Football" as opposed to the Canadian equivalent. He has also apparently agreed to a contract with former Pitcher/Second Baseman Jerry Marvin to be the Assistant GM. There is no word yet on whether Chloe Nyberg, the former PR lady will be added to the front office although a reported dual headed monster of Chloe and Missy America in charge of analytics/salary cap has been rumored, giving GM Metro an extra leg up on the competition is he has already gathered a top flight front office staff.

MARVIN SPOTTED IN TWIN CITIES, HAZE TO BUY CANADIAN LEAGUE TEAM!

For a few hours it seemed as if GM Metro was bound for Pearl Harbor but everything has been shaken up in the last hour. Reports out of St. Paul are that Jerry Marvin recently touched down at the airport and was promptly whiskey away before any photographs could be taken. The same limousine was seen to be later driving around the Minneapolis area so this may be nothing more than a smokescreen from Metro’s camp but there appears to be something going on, especially with earlier reports suggesting that St. Paul was GM Metro’s number one destination.

In other breaking news, former Montreal Zephyr’s Owner Wesley Mays Haze announced today that he would be purchasing a Canadian Football team. His well-known inability to enter the United States quickly removed him from possibly using his NBL buy-out share on an HIFL team but it appears he will not lose out on a stake of the North American professional sports market. While the impact on the GM Metro sweepstakes is unknown at this time; Haze did not pull any punches when asked.

“I think it’s obvious to everyone who I will want to lead the team if I purchase it and I’m prepared to do whatever it takes to make it happen; ownership stake, full say on personnel, it doesn’t matter. I might just use the rest of my Harpo money and buy Brinks so I can back a couple of their trucks up on Met’s lawn.”

It is unknown whether this was the connection referred to in an earlier report but regardless, with the new developments, the pressure is on Pearl Harbor to quickly seal the deal with GM Metro or risk losing him elsewhere. Other franchises and general managers however may be hoping for the Wesley Mays Haze deal to come through and allow GM Metro to jump, effectively opening up one more job for an unemployed GM, and also for the owners not having to worry about a team led by Metro that is sure, at some point in the near future, to become a force.

FREE AGENCY BREAKDOWN : DEFENSE!

In our final chapter leading up to free agency, we take a look at the top name at each of the 3 major corps of the defense...

At linebacker, former Long Beach tackling Machine Ervin Edwards (28) is looking to be rewarded for his world class ability.  Edwards is a high-motor player who racked up 494 tackles (second most in the history of the league) and 19 sacks in his 4 years on Long Beach. He is going to be in high demand as he does everything right and is not known as a locker room problem.

The class of the defensive backfield is undoubtedly former Alabama Free Safety Carl Thigpen (29).  Thigpen captained the 3 time Impact Bowl winning defense since his arrival in season 1.  In 4 years with the Nighthawks, Thigpen collected 263 tackles, 3 sacks, and 18 interceptions (second most in the history of the league), is the leagues all time leading interception return yardage leader, and has a league high 4 defensive Touchdowns.  A True leader and Center Fielder on defense, Thigpen is said to prefer heading back towards the West Coast to be closer to his family, giving teams in the Western Conference a slight edge in negotiations, but it is believed that the "right" contract could keep Carl anywhere in the east.

On the defensive line, reigning defensive player of the year William Marquez, the leagues all time sack leader at 54, is looking for one last contract before his career ends.  Marquez (31) has forced 7 fumbles and collected 264 tackles in his 4 year's with Orlando and is still known as a VERY hard worker on defense.  While not considered a leader on defense, his play leads by example, making him an obvious choice for any team looking to make a run at the Impact Bowl this season.

AS DRAFT COMBINE APPROACHES, 3 QB'S BATTLE FOR TOP GRADE!

Coming into the 2015 Draft, the top arms are all jockeying for position to claim the title of "best QB" but after a full season of college football it comes down to 3 names as we head into the HIFL Scouting Combine... Colgate's Louis Alicea, a 6'3 pocket passer with great arm strength and Accuracy but questions about his ability to play against top competition, Tashaun Pate, a dual threat from Rutgers who can beat you with his arm or his legs, but has been called out by opponents for taking plays off, and 2LT John Carr, 6'3 pocket passer from the Air Force Academy who, while lacking the big arm to take teams deep, has been praised for his leadership both on and off the field.

All three QB's will be on display at the scouting combine this week, so teams looking for a high round quarterback will clearly be interested in checking them out along with a few other names who have seen their draft stock slip for various reasons.

AGENT SAYS LONG BEACH "VERY" INTERESTED IN BRINGING ERVIN EDWARD BACK!

Long Beach, CA -- Reports are flying around the league that at least 4 teams are making 3 time pro bowl linebacker Ervin Edward their top target in free agency this off-season, but Edward's agent Eli Harris tells ESPN that Long Beach, the club that Ervin has played for since the HIFL's birth in 2010 is making plans to make a big push for the superstar player.

"Vegas, Pearl Harbor, and St. Paul are all ready to strike a deal, but Ervin is excited to know that GM Pancho is very interested in brining him back to Long Beach, it's good to know that this GM is smarter than the last guy calling the shots."

With a very talented rookie linebacker in Stephen Leake (also an Eli Harris client) under contract, the Long Beach defense could really be fearsome with a defensive captain like Edward back on the field.

ROOKIE RB ALLEN TELLS RICKARD AND RHODES "BE READY TO CARRY MY BAGS!"

Oakland, CA -- It's usually a good thing when a team's 4th round draft pick is making noise, but that's because it's usually noise on the field.  Here in Oakland however rookie running back Christopher Allen, a 5'11 back out of the University of Georgia has made headlines before even stepping foot on to the teams practice field.

Allen sent a tweet out to Silverback RB's Dan Rhodes and Cleo Rickard that read...

"@DRhodes25 @CR23RB Hope yall r ready to carry my bags off the bus, that's all the carries you gonna get with me in town. #ExtraRest #BenchTime #TrueStar"

While veteran starter Dan Rhodes didn't take the bait, second year RB Cleo Rickard dove in head first replying with...

"@CAllen32UGA Shut yo punk ass up, You'll be lucky to return kicks boy!"

The tweet from Rickard was later deleted, but it is already clear that Their is a competition heating up in Oakland.

RUTHERFORD SAYS TOMBSTONE COULD BE BURIED IF OTHER WR'S DON'T STEP UP.

Tombstone, AZ -- Former Predator wide receiver Dee Rutherford is now a member of the Tombstone Outlaws and after watching his new GM forfeit away a pair of late round draft picks, Rutherford has determined that his fellow WR's are not looking like a corps that will help talented QB Caleb Smoak make a run at a championship.  Rutherford said via his sports blog, "This team has some guys with potential, but they are really going to need to step up or else I'll be doubled every game and we won't do anything through the air, which will make it hard for our golden boy Robles to run the rock. We need to either step up, or find some new blood in free agency."

Rutherford, who has only averaged 40 catches for 500 yards and 2 TDs per season to this point is hoping to be a bigger part of the offense, but clearly will need help if QB Caleb Smoak and ROTY Curt Robles are going maximize their own potential.

QB J. PRUITT SAYS HE WILL HOLD OUT FOR NEW CONTRACT!

Hawaii -- After a series of interesting and head turning moves from new Pearl Harbor GM Captain Metro, Predators QB Jose Pruitt has informed his agent that he refuses to play for the Predators unless he is given a contract extension that meets his needs and provides him with security, including at least a limited No Trade clause and a No Amnesty Clause.

Pruitt, a 25 year old 2 time pro bowler for the Predators was quoted as saying: "GM Metro has shown that he is not a players GM, he is all about his bottom line and the team being molded in his vision, I need to know if I fit that vision or if he will just use me for a year and discard me the moment I am no longer of use to him, or a new shiny toy is dangled his way.  ...I am not playing without a new deal, end of story."

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out in Pearl Harbor, as the news and comments of Pruitt have split the locker room with several players agreeing with his lack of confidence in GM Metro, while the others believe Pruitt acting out as a sign of immaturity.

QB STEVEN CRAWFORD MAKES IT CLEAR THAT HOUSER IS KEY TO RETURN TO LINCOLN!

Lincoln, NB -- Lincoln Pride QB Steven Crawford told local news media today that he does not see a future in Lincoln unless the team brings back talented WR Hector Houser.  Crawford said, "I don't care if he had his worst season last year, the guy is a playmaker.  If we don't bring him back, I can't see myself returning either, we don't exactly have a crop of replacements for him, and I can't throw the ball if there isn't at least one star there to catch it."

While the Pride do not have a bona fide star receiver on the roster, ownership does hope that last years 11th overall pick Michael Griswold can continue to develop and eventually fill that role, but until then the WR corps in Lincoln is very unproven and very thin.

VEGAS PREPARED TO MAKE MARQUEZ HIGHEST PAID DE IN LEAGUE HISTORY!

Las Vegas, NV -- The defending Western Conference Champions have openly expressed interest in free agent DE William Marquez, from flying him in for a private workout to making their initial offer to Marquez's agent in anticipation of the signing period beginning (which is within the rules of the HIFL).  It appears that Marquez is also interested in a potential move to Vegas, which is reportedly prepared to offer Marquez a deal that will make him the highest paid DE in the league.

Last year's #4 overall pick David Wilson (formerly of DC now of Pearl Harbor) is currently the standard barer at 6.75MM per season, but if Vegas and Marquez have their way the  31 year old sack machine will take that honor and his talents with him to the Vegas desert.

Is there a dark horse in the running that could derail GM Apollo's plans, or is Marquez simply waiting for the signing period to begin tonight at midnight?

TIGHT END ONLY REMAINING NEED FOR NIGHTHAWKS!

Mobile, AL -- As GM's frantically plan their strategies to attack the Free Agent market which is set to open in just a few hours, GM Reya Serra has the luxury of sitting back and deciding which Tight End will occupy her final roster spot.  A very stress-free scenario compared to the other teams around the league, but with former 4 year Nighthawk Henry Mullins lobbying to return to the team and reports that GM Reya is looking at other options, their could at least be some questions raised among the fan base.  On the outside looking in, there are a couple of Tight Ends who are better pass catchers or better blockers than Mullins, but as an all around player most see Mullins as the second best option in the free agent pool.

If GM Serra signs a better player, fans can only complain so much, but if the new TE is a bust, fans may begin to grumble about the day the team let it's 4 year starter walk to another team.

Orlando, FL -- With news breaking that William Marquez already has a reported verbal offer on the table from Las Vegas GM Leander Apollo, fans in Orlando are pressing hard for GM Gravedigger to open up the pocketbook like he is back in New York City in order to retain the services of the HIFL's all time leading sacker.

Marquez has not expressed a desire to leave Orlando, but has said he is seeking one last contract with financial security and a championship opportunity, two things that Las Vegas can provide. Is GM Gravedigger willing to deal?  Is he even interested in Marquez?  The Marquez camp has yet to hear from the towering GM, which has led some to believe the team is willing to let him walk, despite their desire to make a "qualifying" offer.

IS QB H. PERRYMAN HEADED TO THE BENCH WITH KYLE AQUINO IN TOWN?

Jefferson City, MO -- Speculation continues to run rampant in J-City as the Missouri Bruins fan base debates on who should be the teams starting QB this coming season.   Should it be newly acquired Kyle Aquino who started 9 games last season for the Dragons of New Jersey last year compiling 2000+ yards 7 TDs and 7 INTs (plus 1 playoff game with 250 yards passing 1 TD 1INT) or does the team stick with Perryman?  The 4 year starter who has thrown for over 3400 yards in 3 of the past 4 seasons while scoring 62 TDs and tossing 33 INTs?  Both men have 2 years on their contracts, both are considered starter quality players, but neither is seen as a franchise changing signal caller.

It will be very interesting as the team moves into training camp with two 6+ year veterans at QB battling for the starting spot.  Will either want to play second fiddle?  How will the loser of the position battle respond, and what of Joan Alford, the second year slinger out of Mississippi?

WITH LOADED RECEIVER CORPS, PRESSURE ON HILL TO SUCCEED?

St. Paul, MN -- With one of the best and most experienced 1-3 WR's in the league in Carlson, Wenzel, and Slaughter the St. Paul Lynx will be a clear favorite to compete with Alabama for the Eastern Conference crown.  All eyes will be on 25 year old 5th year QB Giovanni Hill. Hill is seeking his first trip to the pro bowl along with a deep playoff run, and many say if he can not succeed with the WR's he has this season, then perhaps he not the right man for the job.

One conference rival said of Hill, "The kid is talented, but his past two seasons have been injury ridden and as talented as he is, I wonder if he is really clutch enough to win the games that matter.  He has the weapons now, so we should know something after this year, no excuses."

DC BOASTS DEFENSIVE TACKLES THAT ARE MORE THAN JUST GOOD

Washington DC -- While the DC Cobras are not a favorite to win a championship or even make it to the post-season, they do boast the best defensive tackle tandem in the league.  Guillermo Good and John Fajardo are two experienced run stuffers who free things up for the linebackers, and DC's duo of Turpin and Stevens are grateful for the solid work up in front of them.

Guillermo Good told local DC reports this weekend that he was looking forward to getting back onto the field and wrecking havoc on opposing o-lines, especially if the team could improve their DE pass rush.

ROOKIE QB CARR LOOKING FORWARD TO BRIGHT FUTURE IN NEW JERSEY

Newark, NJ -- New Dragons' backup QB John Carr says he is excited to get into the HIFL despite the disappointment of not being drafted in the first two rounds as he was projected.  Carr says that he will use the unexpected result of the draft as motivation moving forward, and that he is very grateful to be drafted by the Dragons, an organization he says "has shown they know how to get to the postseason."  Now Carr hopes to slowly come along in the Jersey system and one day become the starter who leads the team to playoff success.

Carr, a 2LT from the Air Force academy has been praised for his accuracy and football IQ as well as his leadership, and many see him doing well behind Jersey starter Michael May.  One scout said "He knows how the chain of command works, so he has no problem waiting until he is promoted to the starting position later in life."

LEAGUE FINES BOBBY SHAPIRO FOR ALLEGED BRIBE, AGENT ON PROBATION!

News out of the HIFL League Office today is that the league has levied a severe fine on player agent Bobby Shapiro after the league was alerted to a bribe offered by the agent to the GM of the Long Beach Mermen.

Shapiro has advised his players to seek trades out of Long Beach due to potential "unfair treatment" and is said to be filing official trade requests right away for recently acquired TE Armand Block, Guard Carlos May, and Strong Safety Richard Hunt.

Shapiro says the alleged "bribe" was actually an offer to keep the troubled GM out of trouble for tampering with an already signed player.  GM Pancho could find himself in more trouble if GM Gooch decides to seek further punishment on the matter.

#FREEBLOCK TRENDING WORLDWIDE AS SHAPIRO TAKES TO SOCIAL MEDIA TO FIGHT GM PANCHO!

Player Agent Bobby Shapiro has taken to social media after being denied trade requests to move 3 of his players from the Long Beach organization.  Shapiro, using his massive web of networks has gotten #FREEBLOCK trending #1 worldwide as fans from all around the country have rallied for Block and his teammates to be "Freed" from a season on the bench.

Long Beach fans have been split on the issue with some believing players should play out their contracts while others believe that unhappy players should be given a chance to play where they want to be.  Armand Block told local media during his vacation that he has been advised not to report for training camp.  Block told reporters:

"Bobby has never steered me wrong before, so I will do what he says.  I pay him to take care of me, and that is what he is doing."

Block then walked away revealing a "#FREEBLOCK" T-shirt, the same that has gone viral and appeared in shoot arounds and Warm Ups in the LA Clippers and Golden State Warriors games this week.

FORMER GM TJ SEEN WEARING "#FREEBLOCK" T-SHIRT ON WAY OUT OF  REHAB FACILITY!

A big story continues to unfold before our eyes today as the #FreeBlock Movement continues to grow.  This time it was former NBL GM of the year GM TJ joining the movement as he was spotted boarding a plane at the Rhode Island airport in a "Free Block" T-shirt.

GM TJ also made headlines with the move due to where GM TJ started his day, a Rhode Island based rehab center which has turned around such lives as now deceased basketball coach Cappy Fields.

GM TJ did not speak with the media at the time, but many say his time at the rehab center is not yet complete, but the outspoken patriot felt compelled to leave his treatment center in order to join a movement that was seeking "true justice."

We will have more on this story as it develops, but sources tell ESPN that GM TJ was on a flight headed for California!

BREAKING NEWS! AFTER SIT DOWN WITH GM PANCHO, ARMAND BLOCK HAS FALLING OUT WITH SHAPIRO!

In an amazing turn of events after meeting with GM Pancho, Armand Block was confronted by his agent and long time friend Bobby Shapiro!  Block tells ESPN that Shapiro "went off" on him for meeting with GM Pancho without his "council."

Block said he was "Shocked and disgusted" by Shapiro's attitude, which ultimately lead to Block announcing he would no longer be represented by Mr. Shapiro, making him open to remain in Long Beach.

Block tweeted out the following after news broke.

@BlockDaSun
@HIFL sorry for the distraction from #FREEBLOCK, I was misguided by a sad and strange man.
To my supporters, #ThankYou but now its time to support the @LBMermen. #GameOn

COBRAS MINI-CAMP CANCELLED BY LEAGUE QUALITY CONTROL OBSERVER!

Washington DC -- The franchises of the HIFL are currently preparing for the start of Season 5, and in doing so have already sent 6 players each to their designated training facilities to work with positional coaches and coordinators in order to get an early jump on training camp, but teams are only allowed to send 3 offensive and 3 defensive players to mini-camp and it appears league observers have shut down the mini camp of the DC Cobras after 4 offensive and 2 defensive players reported for camp Monday morning.

League officials informed the team and their staff that due to the violation, mini camp would be cancelled for the team, costing them valuable additional training.  DC Owner Hershel Kiss was not pleased with the news saying...

"I am very displeased with this news, it is not sweet at all.  GM Jon should have known better, we hired him because he is known for not making these franchisian-mistakes..."

NEW JERSEY CORNER JARVIS BOTTS GETS RAVING REVIEWS AS "MOST IMPROVED PLAYER IN OFF-SEASON!"

I took a tour of each team in the league's training camp events this off-season and here is my top 10 most improved players.

10. Alfred Glass, CB, Oakland
The 22 year old corner is looking fast and is catching everything thrown his way, he's looking to make the vaunted Oakland defense a scoring threat this season.

9. Stephen Leake, LB, Long Beach (rookie)
Leake is looking motivated after falling out of the top 10 in the HIFL draft. The sure-tackling Maryland graduate is hoping to make an impact in the middle of the Long Beach defense, look for him to make an immediate impact.

8. George Britt, OT, Oakland (rookie)
The top overall pick is looking well worth the selection and large contract as he is showing off the charts pass blocking skills and looks like a potential road grader in the run game. Endurance could be an issue, but he's a young kid and has lots of time to get into better shape.

7. Scott Schwarz, TE, Alabama
Schwarz didn't have a single snap in his rookie year, but this year he has shown up in training camp with AMAZING hands.  If the 'Hawks find a way to get him involved he could develop and prove to be another dominant pass catching tight end on an already stacked team.

6. Waylon Hagan, DE, Alabama
Another Nighthawk showing how great the Alabama coaching staff is... Hagan looks like a freak of nature firing off the line of scrimmage, look for big sack numbers from this former Southern Miss standout.

5. Andrew Vieira, P, Lincoln (rookie)
Remember the drama of Vieira being drafted in the 2nd round? ...Well this kid's leg might just make people think of it as a brilliant play.  Vieira has shown the ability to completely flip the field and dominate the field position game.

4. William Mayo, DT, Las Vegas (rookie)
The #3 overall pick is looking like a total monster in the middle of the stingy Scorpions defense. We new he was good, but I didn't know he was THIS good. Look for him to garner pro-bowl consideration as a rookie.

3. Randy Oliver, FB, Tombstone (rookie)
Rookie's are trending in this article, but for good reason.  Randy is a 5th round pick but he looks like a great blocker and he is a very smart football player. Look for him to help Curt Robles continue to grow as a back and really put on a show in Tombstone.

2. Gordon Goulet, LB, Las Vegas (rookie)
Commissioner Gordon looks ready to fight crime and offenses this season with his speed, intelligence, and ability to over power blockers. This 3rd round pick might make GM's second guess passing on potential in future drafts.

1. Jarvis Botts, CB, New Jersey
Botts has been underwhelming in two previous training camps failing to even make a week 1 roster, but now that he is under the wing of defensive coordinator Joan Swope he is looking like a stud. Showing a quicker first step, better awareness of the field and opponents routes, and a new found passion for the game Botts looks like a steal for the Dragons.

PRESEASON WEEK 1:

Players, Coaches, and even hardcore fans are excited to see the HIFL return this week with the first week of pre-season football.  While the games don't matter the performances of each player does.  Starters defend their jobs against hungry back ups, rookies look to set the pace for a strong season, and unknowns look to make a name for themselves to earn playing time in the future.

Who will step up and seize the moment?

Who will show that father time is catching up?

...and can all 12 teams avoid serious injury before the regular season gets underway?  We'll find out this Sunday.

DRAMATIC DRIVE FOR LINCOLN SHOWS FEELINGS OF PRIDE COACHES TOWARDS QB RACE.

Lincoln, NB -- Down by 5 points with 3 minutes to go in the game the Lincoln Pride fielded the ball at their own 25 yard line.  With 75 yards between themselves and victory, the team continued to use both Steven Crawford and William Brewster at Quarterback (depending on the formation).  The drive started with a run for no gain, setting up 2nd and 10 as the DC Cobras defense looked to keep the Pride from getting a first down, let alone the winning score, but a pass from Crawford to RB George Page picked up 11 yards and gave the Pride a new set of downs.   On the next play Brewster threw to a wide open Chris Marchand but the RB dropped the ball, much to the disappointment of the fans. Things weren't made any better when on 2nd down Crawford over threw Page as he streaked down the sidelines, setting up a tough 3rd and 10 with only 1:39 on the clock and no time outs. On 3rd down Crawford dropped back and again found Page, this time picking up the first down and getting the ball to the DC 49 yard line on the 15 yard catch and run.  The Pride quickly sprinted to the 49 and spiked the ball to kill the clock with :52 remaining.

The most telling part of the drive and possibly the future came moments later when William Brewster marched onto the field to relieve Crawford, while Crawford stood on the sideline with an unhappy look in his eyes, Brewster took the snap and found Hector Houser on a crossing route in the middle of the field! Houser broke a tackle and then sprinted towards the endzone instead of tunning out of bounds to stop the clock. With nothing but green grass between he and a great winning score, Houser ran for glory, but in a flash Cobras linebacker James Turpin managed to dive and tackle Houser by he ankles, bringing him down at the 9 yard line!

Lincoln's offense sprinted towards the line of scrimmage but the clock would run down to 00:00 before they could get set and get a final play ran. As the Cobras celebrated the victory the Pride stood dumbfounded at the 9 yard line as Hector Houser shook his head in disbelief.

Steven Crawford immediately left the field of play for the showers having gone 7/14 for 81 yards 1 TD and 1 INT, many believe Crawford could be moved soon as William Brewster has looked impressive enough to start and at a contract price nearly half that of Crawford.  Brewster finished his night with a line of 11/16 for 147 yards 1 TD and 1 INT.

PERRYMAN'S TWO RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS GIVE BRUINS COACHING STAFF HOPE FOR TEAM'S STRUGGLING OFFENSE.

Las Vegas, NV -- While just a few weeks ago it appeared veteran QB Herbert Perryman was headed for the bench, it now appears that Perryman might be the only hope for an offense that has struggled through the two preseason games to start this season. 3 TD passes vs. Pearl Harbor (w/ 4 interceptions) and then 2 rushing touchdowns against Las Vegas, Herbert Perryman is responsible for every offensive Touchdown the Bruins have scored this preseason.

After the game against Las Vegas, Missouri offensive Coordinator Jim Haas told reports: "Perryman is the man for us at QB, right now he gives us the best chance to win games. His legs are important for us, and he's not too proud of a man to hand the ball off when we call a slew of slop suckin' run plays!"

The news can't come as pleasant to Kyle Aquino, but having starter Herbert Perryman in higher spirits and starting seems to be a good move for the Bruins as they approach the start of the season with a road trip to DC on the horizon.

SCORPIONS LOSE SS HICKEY TO INJURY FOR 6-8 WEEKS!

Las Vegas, NV -- The defending Western Conference Champions suffered a major blow to their bid to return to the Impact Bowl this season when they saw 2nd year starting Strong Safety Darrel Hickey go down 4 plays into the 1st quarter.  Hickey was coming in to make a tackle on Missouri Running Back Philip Gonzales when he was rolled up on by Guard Clyde Colbert.   Hickey was carted off the field and was later diagnosed with a sprained knee.

Hickey, the 9th overall pick last season played well as a rookie for the Scorpions last year recording 67 tackles, 2 sacks, and 1 interception and will be sorely missed over the next 6-8 weeks. The Scorpions will likely turn to either rookie Alex Brown or back up Free Safety Johnathan Cruz, neither is seen as a strong starter, but with few options on the table Vegas will have to make due.

GM REBEL'S COMMITMENT COMING INTO QUESTION EARLY?

Oakland, CA -- Reports out of O-Town bring whispers of displeasure in the front office of the Silverbacks as owner Koba Caeser is said to be disappointed in his GM, GM Rebel's lack of "hands on" interactions with the team.  Caeser is believed to have expected more from his GM and even though we are only two weeks into the new season, it is rumored that Koba is considering an attempt to lure GM Gravedigger out of Orlando to come in and take over Oakland if he does decide to let GM Rebel go.

Is this all rumor or is there more to the story?

GM Rebel may need to do more to show his owner that he is the man for the job.

D.C. CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE IN THE R.Z.

Washington DC -- The DC Cobras are clearly a rebuilding program, but if early showings are an example of what the team will do all season, the team could be in for another long year at the bottom of the standings.  The biggest reason for this is a lack of success in the Red Zone.
Here is a recap of the failed drives that reached the red zone.

@ Lincoln
- 1st Quarter: 13 play drive ends with 3 failed plays from the 3 yard line. 20 yard FG.
- 2nd Quarter: After an interception at the Lincoln 39 results in a drive to the 20 that stalls and results in a 38 yard field goal.
- 3rd Quarter: 6 play drive from the Lincoln 20 (after 66 yard punt return) results in field goal from the 7 yard line.

vs. Oakland
- First drive of the game vs. Oakland an offside penalty took the team out of the red-zone back to the 23 yard line. Team forced to kick field goal.
- 2nd Quarter: After 66 yard kick return to the 30 yard line the team drives to the 10. back to back incomplete passes result in 23 yard field goal.
- 3rd Quarter: 10 play drive results in field goal from the 12 yard line.

For the Cobras and Coach Shaun Saint's to run the offense they hope to install, they will need to convert in the red zone, a task that is easier said than done.  Coach Saint spoke with the media after the team's second preseason game saying:

"It's a work in progress, we obviously want to score every time we have the ball and we want to score touchdowns whenever we reach the red zone, but these guys have a long way to go and a long way to grow. We'll get there, we just need to execute the offense."

MULLINS TAKES PRIDE IN SHOWING "SHUTDOWN" CAPABILITY DURING PRE-SEASON!

Orlando, FL -- Stampede cornerback Joseph Mullins was all smiles after his performance against the Lincoln Pride where the 3rd year DB held all-pro WR Hector Houser to 1 catch for 5 yards while swatting two passes and intercepting one and returning it for a touchdown. This game comes on the heels of a performance against the Tombstone Outlaws in which Mullins completely locked down Outlaw Top WR Dee Rutherford keeping him off the stat sheet completely.   After the game Mullins had this to say:

"I told people a long time ago that I am a shutdown corner man, and people just laugh. They think because I've been on 3rd teams in 3 years that I ain't got game, but na man.  Ask Rutherford, ask Houser... They'll tell you that I'm the real deal, man."

Mullins, a 4th round pick by Oakland in Season 3 started 15 games and had 3 interceptions, last season he signed a 1 year deal with Lincoln and started 16 games and again had 3 interceptions with 1 returned for a TD.  Now on a 4 year deal with Orlando, Mullins is looking to become a cornerstone in the Orlando defense and at 23 years old he hopes to do so for a long, long time.

Newark, NJ -- With Season 4 Offensive player of the year John Spurgeon sidelined due to sever migraines during the preseason sans two carries in the second preseason game, his veteran back up DeAngelo Neuman showed that even at 31, there was still gas in the tank as he ran for a combined 194 yards and 2 touchdowns in two preseason match ups.  Neuman, who has been a career Dragon since the league started in 2010, says he was happy to be able to contribute to the team and help out while Spurgeon is sidelined.

"Man, I'm just happy to be able to contribute to the team while John is sidelined. I'm not looking to poach his job, and I'm not trying to angle for a better future somewhere else, I'm just running hard for my team, we are a family, we are the Dragons, and this is Dragon's football."

It is unclear at this moment if Spurgeon will be cleared to play in the season opener, but team medical officials seem optimistic that the explosive back will be ready by the time the team locks in.

LACK OF PRESSURE ON THE QB CAUSE FOR CONCERN IN LONG BEACH?

Long Beach, CA -- After only reaching the Quarterback for a sack once in their first preseason game against Alabama, the Long Beach Mermen failed to bring the QB down once in their final preseason exhibition against New Jersey.  The lack of pass rush has many fans chirping on social media but one man who isn't worried is Mermen defensive coordinator Atreyu Seau.  Seau says the team needs time to come together but he did mention the fact that he would not hesitate to make changes if the defense did not adapt to his methods in a "timely manner."

Seau went on to praise the skills of rookies Stephen Leake and David Seymore who he believes will continue to develop into dominant players both against the run and the pass. One bright spot for the Long Beach defense has been their discipline with only 3 defensive penalties over two games.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD: PREDATORS LOSE OG ESPARZA TO TORN QUAD!

Hawaii -- It is always a concern of players, coaches, GM's, owners, and fans that the preseason can lead to "pointless" injuries during a meaningless game, and in Pearl Harbor that nightmare was realized this week when starting guard Albert Esparza as lost to a torn quadriceps while blocking Alabama rookie DT Tony Stacy wtih 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd Quarter.  Team doctors tell ESPN that Esparza will be out for 8-12 weeks barring any setbacks in his rehab.

Esparza, 29, is coming off of his best season as a pro, and back to back pro bowl seasons since joining the Predators 2 years ago.  He was very emotional after the game when asked about his chances to return this season.

"It's really hard you know? you work hard all offseason to be ready to play and then this happens.  I hope I can return this season and I hope the team is ok without me while I'm down."

The Predators may have to turn to back up center Lloyd Graff in the meantime, unless they plan to put Esparza on the IR for the season and pursue a free agent replacement.

ALABAMA PREPARED TO RUN OVER COMPETITION IN QUEST FOR 4th CHAMPIONSHIP!

Mobile, AL -- The defending world champions of football are looking poised to "run" over the field of opponents that stand in their way of a 4th Impact Bowl Championship this season.  Behind 3 time MVP Jose Mackey the Nighthawks look unstoppable on the ground. Solid blocking, great legs, and the offensive mind of coordinator Steve Brigham Alabama has brutalized defenses with their powerful run game.  Take a look...

Team Rushing Yards: 417
Jose Mackey: 293, 2 TDs
Dale Link: 104, 1 TD

If Jose Mackey and his offensive line can stay healthy, there is no reason to believe anyone can stop one of the greatest running backs in football history.

HILL SAYS FRACTURED CHEEK IS FINE, WILL START WEEK 1!

St. Paul, MN -- Lynx fans let out a collect sigh of relief this week when QB Gio Hill told the press that his fractured cheek was healed and he was cleared to lead the high powered St. Paul offense as they set to open the season in New Jersey.

The news comes at a good time as fans got to see what the team looked like without the star QB as the second unit failed to score a touchdown and only put up 6 points against Tombstone.

With Hill off of the injury report only Howard Broyles is listed as doubtful with a bruised jaw, if Broyles can not play Donald Benton will handle the full share of center duties this week.

SMOAK, ROBLES EACH EXCITED TO GET SEASON 5 UNDER WAY UNDER COACH RUDINO!

Tombstone, AZ -- The centerpieces of the Tombstone Outlaws offense, QB Caleb Smoak and running back Curt Robles are each looking forward to what they believe will be a break out season for their team.  Robles and Smoak both praised head coach John Rudino and his ability to manage the small details that make the team tick, from strategy to formations and adjustments.

Smoak said, "It's like having a GM and coach all in one, I think Coach Rudino will be a great GM one day, he shows a real passion for not just the X's and O's but the behind the curtain dealings too!"

Robles echoed the same saying, "Coach is more than a coach, he's like got the mind of an owner, man.  You know?  He comes to work with his folder of research he knows what he wants and how he wants it done, and we know he means business.  It's incredible he can manage the team and gameplan both, but that's just how Coach is."

WEEK 1 PREVIEW : TWO PRIME TIME GAMES SET THE TONE FOR SEASON 5!

The High Impact Football League is set to kick off it's fifth season of play tomorrow night with a special prime time tradition.  The Defending Impact Bowl Champions will host the first game of the season on Friday night to set the pace for the rest of the teams who kick off play on Sunday.

The Alabama Nighthawks will play host to the Orlando Stampede in a rematch from last seasons Eastern Conference Championship game.  Orlando will look to avenge last seasons post-season thumping in the same stadium they fell 31-14 to the eventual champions.

Orlando looks primed to improve on their 10-6 record from last season, but to do so they would have to finally get over a the hump of defeated the Nighthawks, something they have historically had trouble doing as they sit on the wrong side of a 2-6 record lifetime and 0-2 in the postseason against the Southern Dynasty.

Can Brian Owen lead his team to victory in a season so say is "make or break" for the talented 29 year old QB, or will 3 time playoff MVP QB Larry Wright and 3 time season MVP Jose Mackey show that the defending champions are still the kings of the roost?

-----

In our second prime time game of the week on Sunday Night Football, The Reigning Western Conference champion Las Vegas Scorpions look to open the season with a stingy performance against the Oakland Silverbacks.

Oakland was awarded the #1 pick in the draft this season due to their 5-11 record (3 way tie for last place with Long Beach and Missouri) but have already seen their season go into a tail spin with the early resignation of GM Johnny Rebel.  Now, after trying to secure the services of second preference GM Gravedigger, the team turns to controversial GM, TJ Grumm.  Can GM TJ right the ship and make a good showing in his teams first outing, or will the prolific Scorpions make a mockery of the team's vaunted defense?

Vegas RB William Swift has big shoes to fill with the retirement of now offensive coordinator Cameron Hollingsworth, but in preseason he looked like a great addition to Trevor Jose's offensive attack, it will be an interesting match up for both teams, and fans are already lining up in Vegas to get a look at a team many believe are a favorite to return to the Impact Bowl.

BREAKING NEWS: OREGON QB MARCUS MARIOTA TO RETURN TO OREGON FOR 2015 SEASON, SHOWS INTEREST IN HIFL!!

Eugene, OR --- Talk about a shocker, the Duck is returning to the pond in 2015, That's right potential NFL draft number 1 overall pick and Heisman winner Marcus Mariota has had a change of heart and decided to return to the University of Oregon for his senior season!

Mariota fell short in his bid to bring Oregon their first ever College Football National Championship during the College Football Playoff, but announced today during an unexpected press conference that he would return with the single goal of bringing the Ducks a championship before turning pro.

Mariota said, "There is work left to be done here in Eugene.  This univeristy deserves a championship and I want to be the one to give it to them.  The pros can wait, and it also gives me more time to evaluate where I want to play once I do in fact graduate."

Fans all over the country have gone insane with the news as NFL GM's collectively groaned, realizing what this could mean for future prospects in relation to the upstart HIFL.

Could Mariota's change of heart and rumored interest in the HIFL lead HIFL teams to "Suck for the Duck?" We'll find out.

COBRAS SUFFER HUGE LOSS AS CHRISTIAN SULLIVAN BREAKS ARM IN 4TH QUARTER!

Washington, DC --- The DC Cobras' season got off to a rocky start when their starting quarterback Christian Sullivan went down with a broken throwing arm in the 4th quarter of their opening weekend game against the Missouri Bruins.

Sullivan attempted a first down scramble with 5:15 left in the game when he was hit hard in the backfield by Bruins defensive end Sean Johnson.  Sullivan instantly fumbled the ball and hit the ground awkwardly, while a fellow Cobra fell on the ball saving the play, Sullivan was clearly done.

Medical staff brought an air-cast and got him off the field, and X-rays showed that the arm was in fact broken.  Michael Royal is expected to start for the Cobras for as long as Sullivan is out, which could be for the duration of the season.

The moment over shadowed great moments in the game like Omer Sasser's HIFL record 65 yard field goal aided by a windy day in DC.

LACK OF SUCCESS IN THE RUN GAME FORCES BRUINS TO AIR IT OUT.

The Missouri Bruins, lead by GM Gooch started this season by bringing in Offensive Coordinator Jim Haas a ground and pound specialist out of Oklahoma but in week 1 the team tried hard to pound the rock but failed to do so successfully only gaining 109 total rushing yards with 40 of them being gained by QB scrambles from Herbert Perryman.

The frustration of failure lead the team to turn to the pass which lead to a 43 pass attempt performance by Perryman.

Clearly the team will have to work harder to successfully run the rock with Gonzales and Freedman and Coach Haas will be at the forefront of the effort.

ROBLES HAS INJURY SCARE AFTER TWEAKING KNEE IN 3RD QUARTER!

Tombstone, AZ -- The fans of the Tombstone Outlaws collectively held their breaths in week one when Curt Robles hurdled a defender and landed awkwardly before collapsing to the turf late in the 3rd Quarter.  Robles was carted off of the field and was replaced by Lawrence Fusco who rushed for 66 yards on 14 carries to finish the game.

After an MRI it was revealed Robles had merely strained his ACL and would be day-to-day headed into next weeks game against Pearl Harbor.
Robles told the media after the game:

"Man, I was terrified when I hit the ground, I thought my season was over but lucky for me the good lord above was like 'na son, it's not your time yet.' and he gave me a pass.  I'm thankful that I will get to continue playing this season, and I can't wait to bury those fossils from Hawaii when they come rolling into our city next week."

Robles tallied an even 100 yards and also caught a touchdown pass in the season opener, much to the delight of the Tombstone fan base.

SAME DANCE NEW PARTNERS? BARNHART PERFORMS WELL IN RELIEF OF BREWSTER, SPARKS NEW CONTROVERSY!

Lincoln, NB -- William Brewster performed well enough in preseason to convince GM Corbin that Steven Crawford was expendable, as a result Brewster was named starter and looked great against the Tombstone Outlaws going 11/12 for 179 yards and 2 TDs for a perfect 158.3 passer rating, but at the start of the 4th quarter he ate a big hit on a sack by Dwayne Light which left him down on the ground.

After the injury, Douglas Barnhart came into the game and went 5/6 for 85 yards and a great 21 yard pass to Hector Houser (his second TD catch of the night), which showed that both QB's could throw the ball into a tight window in a clutch situation.  Barnhart also ended the night with a perfect 158.3 passer rating, and the former Long Beach starter was excited to get the chance to play, saying:

"If Brewster can't hang, I'm ready to take the reigns and run with it baby, I'm a winner, and I can help this team win. I tried to show that tonight, hopefully GM Corbin got the message."

After closer examination it was shown that there were no broken ribs for Brewster and he should be 100% in time for the start of the teams week 2 match up against Las Vegas, much to the relief of GM Corbin and his staff.
