Mafia OOC Discussion
« on: January 27, 2015, 12:48:25 PM »
Not sure why we don't have one of these. I feel like it could come in handy. We should totes get one over on MFX too.

Anyways.

I'll be updating the Mafia Table and Game History one of these days.

Let's keep this going, we'll never die.

Sign up to run games! Even if you never have before. I'm sure Talon, Pancho or I would not mind co-modding to help you through your first game.

Quite true.

I'm up for running a game after whoever's next on the list.

There's no gimmick in mine.  I'm going old school.

Forgot we had this, so totally using it for an aside based on a few recent games (including the start to this latest one):

Why does a certain set of "logic", such as "X action/speech = Scum", exist in mafia? And more importantly, why is it treated like gospel?

To me every time someone says "this means scum" or "scum would want this" I want to headbutt the wall. The second a predetermined set of playing conventions are created and believed true is the second scum get a much easier ride by just not doing them (and in turn pointing out things that are close in townies for mislynches).

I'd like to point out there are a few of the "tells" that do appear to work, but there is an equal number that don't.

Plus, there's a lot of other logic conventions broken (e.g. "not changing my vote until you prove you're not scum"), but that's a topic for another rant.

they come from playing the game for years and watching shit play out. yes, they don't always work, and i don't treat them as gospel. but when there is nothing else to go on, that's how you play the game. you watch how people act and what they say. someone who is scum generally plays on their tiptoes and has to watch what they do, so these "predetermined set of conventions" are constantly changing. they aren't the same today as they were when i started playing 7 years ago. as the people who play evolve, so do the tells, but there are those that always seem to stick around and at the very least create a conversation that might cause a sum player to slip up.

I believe that can better explain your question, Corbin.

The Mafiawiki article does shine a little light into the subject, and suggest why the prevalent opinion is to follow the Meta, as is Tritch's post on why he sometimes falls into the pattern of Metagaming.

Thank you both  :)
