What was your biggest takeaway from your game this week?
That we are inconsistent. We should have won that game. Despite the score we should have won. We converted on fourth down and third down pretty well. We owned the time of possession. What was different, well we didn't play Michigan like we played everyone else. The week we needed to be tight and get this big road win we didn't play like we have been playing. Two interceptions by Mazza is just not what happens. One of the more sure handed Rb's in the game fumbles the ball. We give up 300 yards in the air. We are, or were the number 1 pass defense in the game. Then to go into Michigan and only score one offensive TD. We picked a bad time to play like the Warriors of last year. We have to tighten this up. We are headed to Tulsa a team looking to ruin someones day. If we come in and do what we just did, we will get the same results. We can't keep winning every other week. Though we would end up 8-8 which would be twice the wins of last year I believe we are better that that.

Are you concerned with the XFL/AAF merger and the rumor of bigger market cities investing in teams to rival the HIFL?
I'll be honest, I don't think of all that. That's for the owners to worry about. I said it before, competition is healthy. At the same time we have a ton of free agents just waiting to get a chance. Hopefully they get the chance because that will make HIFL Better. These guys will go over to this other league, play well get noticed and ultimately sign HIFL contracts because, let's be real, this is the show. You want to be in the HIFL.

What is the biggest shocker from the trade deadline week?
Hell, us getting the Pitts brothers wasn't a shocker for you guys (Smiles). I'll say Seattle followed our lead in acquiring a solid WR. Now you guys could debate what's the better tandem Pierce/Beck  or the Pitts brothers but I guess the only way that debate happens if we start playing up to our talent and putting some wins together.

In order to win this week, which player needs to have a big day?
I hate to pin this all on one player but we are facing a Tulsa, a team in flux. I believe we have one of the more potent offences talent wise. We have to go out there and show it. We are averaging less points this year then last and we have much better talent this year. So, I'm gonna say Mazza needs to have a big game this week.

Let me talk to you, just us, what we say here stays here. I think we are talented enough to be dropping 30 plus consistently. See, I believe in our offense, I believe in your ability to light these fools up, so let me ask you a few questions,

Why aren't we?

What do you see as our biggest heel on offense, is it the playbook, the play calling or something else?

OK Tommy, WE got Tulsa this week and I want you to go out there and smoke'em. I'll let you get to the practice field and get these guys ready.

---

Ms. Watson, can you get me John Pitts?

--

John, as you know I brought you here on the highest recommendation from your brother plus because I know who the hell you are.  I heard the rumblings that we shouldn't have traded away our 1st and 2nd for a player on his last year of his contract. They said why did I give away the future. The way I see it, I did everything I could to make the dream happen and bring you both together. See, I was trading picks away for the future. The future of The Atlanta Warriors with the Pitts brothers together for the forceable future. With that said, can I speak to you about your contract? I really want to keep you guys together at least for the next 2-3 years. I would like to offer you an extension. You are currently making 12 Mill, I would like to offer you 2 years at 13 but I can give you 3 in BP just like your brother starting next season to make you gentlemen the Duo of the Dirty South. This also allows you and your brother to become free agents together and work as a package, a package I hope i'm still here to re-sign.

Great, I'll call you agent and work this out.

---

Ms. Watson can you get me Mr. Maker

---

Mr. Maker as you know I paid a big price to bring your client together with his brother. I know they have been dying to play together for some time. With that said we had a conversation about extensions and we spoke about extending his contract two more years starting next year so he could avoid free agency and stay playing with his brother until they both become free agents. I gave him some numbers he was happy with. I told him I would give him 2 year extension for 13Mil per and 3M BP to make him and his brother the face of Atlanta. I wanted to run it by you to make sure we are all on the same page, that this contract extension is to start next season. He liked it but you are his agent, so I wanted to make sure not to do anything without you involved to make sure I am not going over anyone's head.

Listen pal, You've been around long enough to have gone through a full season and an off-season, you know the rules and the procedures.  You don't offer contracts to players, you call the agents. That's our only job in this league.

I don't care if John Pitts agreed to play for free next year or if he agreed to a deal that makes him the highest paid in history, deals go through me and only me.

Since you had to do it your way, behind closed doors and behind my back, I'm done here.  Don't bother me again.   John told me he "agreed" to a deal, that is a violation of the contract he and I have together, and it violates the league's tampering policy too, so if you don't leave it right here, my next call is to the league office to report you for tampering and then you get fined and lose draft picks.

Don't test me, because boy, you won't like the results.

...That being said, If you want this all forgiven, we're going to have to sign a new deal, 2 years $14.25MM and 3.25MM in bonus money. Effective right now.

--

Mr. Ames, always good to see you, hope you are having a good day because I want to make it better. As we both know your client Julio Redd becomes a free agent and I would love to make him a Warrior for the next hand full of years and offer him 5 years at 5 mil per starting next season. Is this something we can get done now, do you and your client prefer less years? Talk to me...How can we get this done to keep your client a Warrior.

Well Mr. Ames, as much as I believe your client does deserve a raise it would be irresponsible of me to offer up a 9.25 million dollar raise before I know what my budget will look like in the off season. We will speak again to get this done but part of my job is to also make sure I can put other talented players around your client so he becomes a winner. Thank you for taking my call.

So a few questions, First, I hated sending Mundy to the minors but we have to see what we have in Swanson. We need to know if this 10 million dollar investment is a long term answer or a missed opportunity.

Ok, so first question is what do we see from DE's Roberts and Shrader so far?

Second question, what has been your take on Mazza this season. He played in the spread system in college. last season he threw for about 20 TD's, he had some lights out games and seemed to really make progress in the off season but this year with an even more potent offense he hasn't really been able to light anyone up. He's made some good choices as far as limiting turnovers but what is your assessment of him so far?

Sending Mundy down was a big deal. He's not happy about it, at all.  Likely going to be wanting a trade in the off-season I'd expect.

As far as Roberts and Shrader, I think Shrader is better, but its a close call.

..With Mazza, his yards and efficiency are both up, so I think he's doing just fine, especially since the offense keeps getting tinkered with left and right, he can't get comfortable.

I'll deal with the Mundy thing when it comes up. hopefully we can bring him back, if not we will look at our options if he wants out. On another note it's good news to have both Roberts and Shrader playing the way they are playing.

As far as tinkering and Mazza being comfortable, we have 7 games left and I expect to let every decision be left to you and the other coaches. I need to see what we can do in the last 7 games with what he have. So I'll sit back and watch as we move forward.

What was your biggest takeaway from your game this week?
Seeing Mazza have possibly his best game yet was great and i expect it to continue. The WR's really showed us how scary we can be through the air and 5 Rushing TD's showed how dangerous we can be on the ground. Our DB's stepped it up. It's just what we needed as a confidence booster. I know Tulsa is struggling in their own right but you play who is on the schedule. We out right thought we should have beaten New Jersey and we see how that turned out so we take no team for granted.

Talk about your news this week and at least two news stories you found interesting.
#MONEYMAZZA, What can I say. His play was a huge confidence boost for us. We had spoken earlier in the week and I asked was he comfortable because, you know, we have had our WR shakeup the past few weeks and looking at different targets with different skills on a week to week basis can throw guys off. But Mazza said he was good and goddamit he went out there and shut me up. As far as any other news targets, well I think that score against St.Paul was a poor show case of sportsmanship. I always believe once you get a 30  point lead in the second half you should play to kill the clock, remove your starters to avoid injury and give some back ups the much needed playing time. So to see a score like that is bad for business. I'm sure those guys in that locker room are humiliated. I feel it was bush league and if we are going to start protecting our players and teams from the possible purging of the XFL we need to do a better job of sportsmanship. I know once it' gets out of hand for us which isn't always we start giving guys opportunity. slowing the pace of the game and making sure our starters are getting the proper rest they need in order to protect them down the stretch. Talking about rest, I am surprised but I am not at how Alabama constantly has Ortega out there running up the score. We already seen him sit an entire half game do to a Concussion scare in week 1, but, again, it's Alabama and you can't spell arrogance without an A. It's who they are , keep running your boys out there, I know we here in Atlanta don't mind.

With 6 games to play, how do you feel about your job security?
I have already been giving the blessing going into season 12 so my priority is to make sure we get the best from this team.

Talk about your opponent this week, what do you expect them to do and how do you win this game?
We play KC, they got a heck of a air game we got a heck of a pass defense. I think the difference will be our run game and time of possession. I think we know and they know we have to keep our offenses off the field to have a chance, so tune in.

Coach, the standings indicate we are one game out the playoffs. At 5 and 5 if we can pick 3-4 wins of the next 6 we should be in great position. It starts with KC, how do you see us matching against them?

I didn't ignore you coach, I don't know if you noticed this permanent smile I've been sporting. Just trying to keep it all tempered. We have been very inconsistent in this area. I want us focused. This next game is the type of game we can win but have been losing. Trust me, I'm happy, you're happy, Atlanta is happy, we're all happy but again, we played a hurting Tulsa that's about to be upended. This week we get down to business. We got to go to Kansas City and play a team that is third seed in their conference trying not to lose. That is the major the difference between our two teams. While they are trying not to lose we are trying to win. So let's go win.

So let's get to it, Now that the HIFL and the players association have agreed on allowing players to play both sides of the ball is there any one you think could help us, maybe between our O-line and D-line or maybe playing out the backfield as a receiving back.

Real quality 2-way players are rare, and I don't think we have anyone we should tinker with right now.  Their might be some guys in the draft that are capable, but as it is, only a few guys like Glass are realistic options and even then, he's only an option because Oakland is a black hole for quality receivers.

Got you coach. I am fine with not tinkering and allowing these guys to become fully invested in your game plan. I'll let you get going with these guys on the practice field. I'll talk to you right before we get on the bus.

----

Ms. Watson can you get me Thomas Mazza

--

Well what can I say except great goddam game. Coach seems very happy with combination of you and the Pitts brothers. Looks like you guys are building some chemistry. Well, this week we going against a team that mirrors us in many ways except they don't have Thomas Mazza and the Pitts brothers. So I say it's time to bring that sky bear down and put our first foot down towards as hopefully this is the start of our march towards the post season. .

What was your biggest takeaway from your game this week?
Well, I think our defense is really coming together. Our passing game was very potent and even though we couldn't convert  on third downs we have become the vertical threat I have been waiting for. It's a shame we couldn't come away with a win because I believe we wasted an incredible performance from our offense and defense this week. We seem to be beating the teams we should beat; Portland, Milwaukee, Orlando. We are losing close games to teams we can beat like Miami, KC, Michigan and we are being blown out by teams we have no business losing too like Jersey and Charlotte. When you think about our games, we have lost two games by field goals. It's really hard because I  and the guys know we should be 7 and 4 and if not for a horrible call in that Miami game we can easily be 8 and 3. But it is what it is and I believe we are in the middle of something special over here. Each game helps us figure out who we are and helps me figure out what position I need to focus on in order to better this team. But again, I know the guys in the locker room are feeling this one because we should have won this game. I hope we are able to use it to motivate us down the stretch.

Talk about your news this week and at least two news stories you found interesting.
Well, I had no idea Dak wanted his release. It's never good when a young Talent like Bloom is out for the season but wanting a release came as a shock. I'll have to get with the coaches and see what we can come up with. As far as other happenings around the league, This news that the Lynx are in discussions with XFL clubs about selling Adrian McCaffrey's contract and forfeiting his rights. I think this is a very risky precedent. This is not a good thing on both fronts, from a players stand point I can see where this could bring on players to ask for more guaranteed contracts. hell I know I would if I knew my team could sell me off to get my contract off their books. From a GM standpoint, why are we trying to give the XFL our talent. We need to be careful, asking players if they want out of their contract to go pursue other opportunities can really offset the balance of how we negotiate contracts. I don't want to see GM's frivolously making signings, pouching talent from other teams and drawing big market free agents only later to then sell them off out the league when it falls apart giving then all this new cap space to work with as they go into the next free agency period and draft. We are all in this together, with the same rules under the same cap, being able to sell off guys undermines the salary cap and is really crappy thing to do to a player you sold big hopes and dreams too. It's one thing to sign a player to a contract and then trade him to a contender for picks. The player is still in the league and gets an opportunity he might not have had other wise but to send him out the league, that doesn't sit right with me.

What do you plan to do during All Star Break?
I personally have some thinking to do, on a personal level I need to step away and do some soul searching. I have made some mistakes in the past and I really need to take a step back and take a deep breath and really figure out how I want to approach the remainder of this opportunity I am being given here in Atlanta. I have to decide how I am going to move forward. One of the toughest things in this league is earning the respect of not only your colleagues but of the men in that locker room who lace them up week in and week out. I am just going to send the guys home. Don't worry about extra practice. We can all agree we need a break. Hopefully these guys go home, get with family and friends and just recover both mentally and psychically.

Hard fought loss.. We gave up nothing on the ground, but Mariota just made plays we usually stop in the air.

Yeah, once we start putting it all together we will be dangerous. I love how our defense is really starting to come together and how we are becoming more of a downfield threat on offense. Things donít seem to get easier down the stretch but I believe we are better than we were the first half of the season, would you agree?

I agree with you.  Having the Pitts boys on the field makes it impossible to really shut down our pass attack, and we're getting our younger kids more playing time so I think they're all going to come together and do great things for us.

Speaking of young talent coming together, I know we havenít got a large sample size of Swanson. With the three games heís started coach do you see anything that tells us this kid could be something special or at least solid, did I make a misread the signs and make a mistake with this kid or is it still to early to tell?

Ok, coach, hopefully by the end of the season we get a better sample size. Coach I am going to bypass my usual agenda and talking to a few of the guys on the team this week. This week I have decided I want to do something different. I am going to have a closed door meeting with the players and staff just because I want every to talk to me about being a better GM for the future. This won't have anything to do with the coaching staff, game planning, scheme, playbook or contracts. I need to address the players about something I deem very important. With that said, after the last walk troughs I will be in the locker room.

-------

(After Practice Lucas walks into the locker room.)

Gentlemen, if I may have your attention please. I have asked the coaches to gather you all here before we depart because I wanted to have a heart to heart with you all. I have asked the coaches to join us because this will not be about the coaching staff, game planning, scheme, playbook or contracts.  I am here today to speak to you very briefly because I want you to speak to me. Gentlemen, let me start by stating the obvious. I. AM.NOT. PERFECT. I am far from it. I have made a ton of mistakes in my life as a person, as a journalist and as a GM. I have paid that price by being embarrassed in just about the worst way possible in front of millions and when it seemed like I should have quit and hid I decided too own my mistakes and swallow my pride because I had made a commitment to bring this city a winner and goddamit I wasn't going to walk away from that. Again, I've made some mistakes, NO DOUBT! But, the one mistake I didn't do was bringing this team together man by man. I know there are times I went far left when all I needed to do was go a little right. I know there are times when I have spoken when it was not required and at times not spoken at all when it might have been really needed. I try to tell myself "I have to do a job, this is a business. I must be professional". Then when I see you go out there and play like you play week in and week out I tell myself "I am grateful to have these men playing so hard" Then I tell myself "I have to do a better job, no only as a GM or boss but as a person" in that I have many regrets. Let me tell you, I have enough regrets to count on 3 sets of hands but the few regrets I do not have, EVER! is taking this job and being able to work with so many talented and professional individuals. You all have taught me a lot but I need one more thing from you. Right now, I am going to ask something of you that might sound crazy. I am going to ask that if I ever disrespected you, if I ever treated you unprofessionally or came off as a two face, back stabber or hypocrite that you please be %100 honest with me and tell me, tell me how I can be, not only a better Gm but a better person.  I owe it to all of you to be the best that I can, both professionally and personally. I want to grow in this part of my life and there is no better teacher than the truth from those you surround yourself with. I promise you this will have no impact on your future here, this is not a weeding out process this is a "Lucas needs to grow the fuck up process" No better group of people to ask then those I have had a direct affect on. So please, speak honestly, candidly and know all that is said will be taken to heart as a lesson for me. I need this and I believe no one should hold a chip on their shoulder, so I believe if you have anything you would like to share with me please do so because we all need to be able to be honest with one another. When we are done I will leave and take this break we have to do some serious soul searching because I want to be a better person. Once we are done I will leave and let you all be on your way to enjoy the break. Coaches, staff, Players, The floor is yours...

(Lucas puts his foot on the chair and leans on his knee)

I think you're too quick to cut, demote, promote, and tweak the roster.  It leaves us without any continuity or any feeling of security in what we are going to be doing week to week.

THE REST OF THE ROOM QUIETLY AGREES

One thing no one can deny is that you want to succeed in Atlanta.  You want to see us win, but sometimes you just kinda get trigger happy I think.  We feel like we're doing fine and developing some good things, but it feels like we're on different timelines.  We aren't ready to win the championship, but the way you constantly change things like Coach said, it makes us feel like what we are doing isn't enough and it taxes everyone.

THE REST OF THE ROOM AGREES A LITTLE LOUDER

Not to offend anyone on the roster right now, but you've made some rash trades moving guys and then trading them away again just like a blink of an eye, and while I like the guys we have here, when you're not sure if your brother is going to be fighting beside you the next day after practice, it leaves us not wanting to come together and bond, because we might be a new group the next day.  We need stability.

THE REST OF THE ROOM AGREES EVEN LOUDER

(Lucas nods and takes a deep breath)

Thank you so much gentlemen. Very strong words that are heart felt. I promise, I will do everything in my my heart and soul to be better for you. Hell, I goddamn guarantee it, you have my word. Thank you for that once again. I have a lot fo self reflecting to do and your words are my guidelines. I am %100 percent sure from this moment on for the rest of the season that the brothers beside you will be the brothers beside you. NOW!, let's enjoy the break gentlemen, enjoy the Alll-Star festivities. Let's give a huge hand to our brother Eric Evans getting into his second All Star game. You earned it and believe next season you will be accompanied by a many number of Warriors. Now let's go enjoy this much needed time off.

Rest up gentlemen, when we get back, Alabama will be waiting for us in our home. We gave them their only 1 loss before we even knew who we really were. 11 games have been played. Our defense has shown up. They will face an offense that like no offense they have seen. We stomped them in their house now we have to make sure we protect ours. So go rest up. Heel up and remember, when we get back it will be go time. Week one, we hit them cocky sons of bitches with our left, now let's finish it and hit them with our right straight in their mouths.

(Lucas walks over to the coaches)

Before we leave can I just have a few words in my office

-------
(In the office)

Gentlemen, (looks at Munoz) Thank you for that. I really needed to hear those things. For both of our captains to step up showed some great leadership. I want to thank you all. I know my movements earlier in the season did not speak to the confidence I have in you all. My questioning of the playbook, the schemes and the constant tweeking of our style of play interfered and I apologize. Thomas Mazza said it best "I do want to succeed in Atlanta" but when he spoke to how the team is progressing and developing together , that really put everything into prospective. I am the hardest on myself. I question everything I do and second guess everyone far to often. At times, from where i sit, wearing the Gm hat, you think you could move pieces around and plug and play guys like this was some sort of HIFL game for Xbox or some sim football game on the computer, sometimes forgetting that this isn't that, that these are lives I am moving around. These are men with emotions and feelings. I always think everyone is a team mate so what ever they are asked to do they should do, then I go and do something without asking or talking to them and that I feel was my biggest issue.

But that changes today.

Gentlemen, When I started this journey I told myself "Get the coaches that fit your style, ask them what they want and go get it for them, then sit back and enjoy the show" I think I have been able to give you gentlemen some talent to work with and you gentlemen have really done a great job developing these players and you have really brought this team together. Each person on this team is an individual and must be treated like one. Coaches, I will promise you gentlemen three things moving forward;

I will have patience and give things time to develop

I will communicate all my intentions with you before making rash moves

I will make sure every player knows that their voices along with our intentions are heard.

Now i have all the confidence in the world that we can put up a fat number 2 on that loss column of Alabama so I am going to leave everything in your hands. Does any one have anything to say or left to do before we wrap this up?
