The only way that really benefits us is if you agree to put into the contract that by restructuring, you will waive Lindsay's restricted free agent rights so that he becomes a UFA this season.

Hmmm... that's fair that you would look for a benefit for your side. I'm going to put a pause on that idea for the moment and see if I can make things work as is right now, but I may take you up on that in the near future. Thanks for your time, David.

-----------------

Let's talk to Eli Harris.

----------

Eli, I screwed up. I can't pretend anything other than that happened. But it doesn't mean I don't want Philip on this team. So here is my proposal...

I will gather the media and publicly apologize to you and Philip for the embarrassment I've caused the two of you. It's only fair to the both of you for how this situation went down.

Also, if Philip still wants to play here, I'd like to add a $250k bonus to his initial deal, thus turning it into a 1 year, $750k deal with $250k bonus. Getting Philip more money is the right thing to do considering he did nothing other than trust I'd file his contract correctly with the league. If Philip doesn't want to re-sign here, I fully understand, but I want him to know I would love to have him back in the fold so that he can help us get another ring this season.

Would this proposal be ok with you and Philip?

Ok, Eli. I'll make it happen. I need to do a bit of maneuvering, then I'll speak to the press and league office the deal.

---------

Let's get David Ames on the line again.

-----------

David, I'll take your offer. Lindsay re-structures to a fully guaranteed $2 million with $500k bonus, and we'll waive this RFA rights.

Good, I’ll send it in.

—————

Let’s talk to James T Crain.

—————-

James, I need to clear a roster spot to make room for a signing, so we will be releasing Angel Hurt. Because it’s so close to the season, I think it’s only fair to give Angel his full $250k. I hope he lands on his feet and has a good pro career.?

Just a vocal tick, James. Nothing more. Thanks for taking my call. I wish Angel the best.

----------------

Maggie, can you gather the media so I can make a statement? Thanks.

----------------

Welcome. As you all know, I made an error that not only cost our team a roster spot and a $1 million cap penalty, but left a player without his contract for this season. That is why I'm addressing all of you today.

Philip Lugo and his agent, Eli Harris, entered into negotiations with us with professionalism and the belief that everything would be taken care of on our end. But I messed up. I did not submit the contract to the league office, and Philip was denied a chance to be at Knights Camp. I am formally apologizing to Philip and Eli. They did everything right, and trusted that I would do the same, but I let them down. I am sorry, gentlemen. You may have felt embarrassed or hurt when you found out Philip did not have a contract, and that is something that should not have happened. I am glad we were able to come to a new agreement that will have Philip with our team this season, and assure you there was no malice behind my actions, simply a mental error. Philip was a key member of our Championship winning team last season, and I look forward to seeing Philip help us win games again this year.

Does anyone have a question about this situation?

1. Who stood out to you from your two preseason games and did anyone fail to impress you?

I'm not going to say any individual failed to impress. Pre-season is about knocking off the rust and getting ready for the opener. There were aspects of our play that could have been better in both games, but it was as a unit, not on a single player. As for who looked good, I also don't take much stock in that, but I'll give Ricky Lackey a shout on offense and Jarvis Botts on D.

2. We saw a lot of big plays in the pre-season, do you think this is a case of starters playing against back ups, early-season rust, or do you predict a season of explosive plays?

There are a lot of players in this league capable of making big plays, so I think we could see a high number made during the year, but just like our own team, I don't take too much from preseason stats.

3. Did anyone earn or lose a starting job in pre-season?  If so who and why?

We weren't really running any battles in the preseason this year. We've got most of our starters back from last year, and they earned the right to start the year with their jobs this season.

4. Has your opinion changed of your team after pre-season?  Care to make a final prediction on your teams regular season record?

No. The goal is still the same. Repeat. We were 14-2 in the regular season last year. I expect us to win at least 13 and get the #1 seed in the Western playoffs. Other teams are confident this year and believe they are the team to beat. There's only one defending champion in HIFL, and they play in San Antonio...

5. Discuss your week one opponent, and what you need to see from your team to insure a win

I've got to be honest. I love this opener. Why play if you're not looking for a challenge, and Alabama is as big a challenge as anyone in this league. They're the winningest franchise in league history, and were a field goal attempt away from beating us for the title last year. They've had to replace some top level/legendary talent this offseason, but I think Pancho did as good a job as he could with the cards he was dealt. They still have Jaime Ortega, so they'll be a challenge, but I expect us to hang a banner, give out some rings, celebrate Coach Action, and get a win...

Absolutely. If you can't get hyped for this game then you might be dead...

The only real position battle we had going into the preseason was for the RB2 spot. Julius didn't get much play, but Ziggy had a strong effort against New Jersey. Leave things as is with Ziggy #2 and Julius #3?

1. Discuss your first game of the season. The good, the bad, the ugly.

The good is easy. We opened the season with a win against a hell of a football team. We moved the ball well on offense and kept them in check on defense. Great win for us. The bad I'd say was giving up a few big plays. They obviously didn't hurt us in the long run, but I don't want our guys to get used to letting up when we're ahead. As for the ugly, the three turnovers. That could cost us a game down the line if it continues. That said, I have confidence we'll clean it up...

2. Talk about the news surrounding your team this week.

Keenan Daley is a tremendous player with a vast amount of confidence and swagger. As long as he exudes confidence and not arrogance, I'm fine with it.

3. Was there a pleasant or unpleasant surprise that you didn't expect from your team in the individual performance category?

Julius Robles. After not playing much in the preseason I didn't think he'd get much play this early, but he came in and did a great job. He's got a long way to go to measure up to his blood, but he showed he belongs in this league.

4. Talk about your week 2 opponent and what you need to do to win this week.

St. Louis has talent on both sides of the ball, but this is a game we should win. If we play our game, offensively and defensively, then it will be hard for any team in the league to beat us...

1. Talk about your teams performance this week, where do you need to improve most?

Solid win. We had some lulls in the action on our end that kept the game close, but St. Louis has talent on their squad. I give them credit for continuing to fight and pushing us until deep in the game. And I know this will sound egotistical, but I don't need to make major improvements at the moment. We're the defending champs. We've won 14 straight regular season games, 17 overall. Teams need to adjust to us, not the other way around...

2. Talk about the ATL/BAMA brawl, what do you think of the incident, the build up, the referees involvement, and the fallout.

Dark day for HIFL. Just bad all around. I appreciate the commissioner's office stepping up and getting suspensions out quickly. Hopefully the message has been sent that this crap won't be tolerated in this league.

3. Talk about Marcus Mariota's situation, what is your take?

I'm surprised that GM T-Bone didn't do more to keep Marcus on their squad, but I can also appreciate his resolve and choice to not give in. Personally I would have either re-worked the deal or traded him to the XFL and gotten value in return, but Bone did it his way, and we'll have to see how it plays out.

4. Talk about your week 3 opponent and what you need to do to win this week.

Winnipeg has some good pieces on their squad and will put up a fight, but if we're not 3-0 it's a letdown...

1. What was your biggest takeaway from your team this weekend?

That we are a balanced squad. We can pass, we can run when needed, and we can make stops on defense. It's nice to not have to rely on one aspect of our team to carry the game for us to win. If we're struggling in one area, someone else steps up. Week in and week out this truly is a team effort, and it's leading to great results.

2. Discuss the XFL's potential move to Sundays, do you feel they are a legitimate threat to the HIFL?  Why or why not?  Do you feel that the recent news stories surrounding GM Lucas in Atlanta, and other the rest of you GM's and your declining approval rating with the HIFLPA and its players is worrisome, and how do you fix the collective GM's image around the football world?

The XFL will be a legitimate threat if we allow them to be. HIFL is still the premier league in the world of professional football, but we need to quit creating controversy. We need to strive for a level of professionalism that we as GMs have not shown since the GM era of HIFL has started. Each year something happens, whether it's a personal battle between GMs, such as the Powers/Kirk feud, or incidents between players and GMs. We need to stop these negative interactions from happening. While individually they might not hurt the league much, collectively it begins to add up. Much like the Atlanta/Alabama saga. Will we ever know exactly what happened? Probably not. But, as it stands today, GM Lucas is cleared of what would be a major infraction. If any evidence ever comes to light that any GM orders his players to injure someone, that GM needs to be banned from HIFL. But word is Coach Munoz and Peter Haney cooked up this scheme, so GM Lucas pushes forward. He's an eager young GM that wants to succeed, and we need that kind of energy within our ranks, as long as the energy is positive. As for our collective reputation with the HIFLPA, we need to work on highlighting the positives of said relationship, such as growing this league into the best in the world during the GM era, and work on repairing the damage in any way we can. But for that to take place, the HIFLPA has to come to us and let us know what's wrong in their eyes...

But for right now I'd like to address the fans of this league, and those who might be a potential fan down the line. Don't give up on HIFL. This is still the premier league in the world, and we'll show that week in and week out with great matchups that thrill the fans. Please don't dwell on what happened between Atlanta and Alabama. Look at Jaime Ortega, who fought through potential concussion issues to have a monster game for the Nighthawks. Look at the players left on the field for the Warriors, who came up short this week, but played hard as hell and fought to the end to get a victory. Look at the teams off to great starts within our league, and watch to see how well they end up doing. Miami, Michigan, Seattle, Las Vegas, Rapid City... I know I'm missing some really strong squads, but let's focus on the good, not the bad.  For our Knights fans, let's look to see our squad fight each and every week for a victory as we look to repeat as Champions. That's what our league needs to do. Don't let the negative energy overtake this league. Fight to make sure what's great about HIFL is what we're talking about. And if you give us a chance to highlight those positives, I think your experience as HIFL fans can only get better...

3. Where do you rank yourself in the league when it comes to your job as a GM, both in the win/loss department and the player relations department.  What could you do better?

Win/loss wise I'd say I'm on a pretty good run the past 4 or 5 seasons. I would have liked more playoff success before last year, but it's always an honor to represent a playoff franchise. We've got 3 GMs that each have 2 Championships, so to get on their level we'd need to win it all again. But I'm happy with how our team has performed since Coach Action's initial hiring to Coach Diaz leading the way. As for player relations, I feel like I have a solid relationship with players. At times, especially when things are going well, I don't check in as much as I could, and like any professional franchise I do release or trade players, but I try to be respectful each time I make a transaction that effects a player's livelihood. Sometimes I do fail and am more callous with my releases and trades that I'd like to be, but I mean no disrespect. Sometimes we all need to realize it's a business and in business things don't always go our way. And if any player in our organization, or any of the HIFLPA's representatives, want to come to me with a way I can better interact with our league's players, I'm all for it. Most HIFL followers probably know I met with HIFL owners this past offseason to try to salvage a deal between GMs and owners. If the HIFLPA thinks I could be helpful in making a deal between players and HIFL teams, I'm willing to help...

4. Talk about this weeks match up, and also one other game that catches your eye.

Milwaukee is a team loaded with young talent. They're still learning to string together victories in this league, but when they do this league better watch out. That said, I think we are not only a more talented roster, but more experienced, and will use those two factors to come up with the victory. As for the rest of the league, how can you not look at Miami at Seattle? Two legitimate Impact Bowl contenders going head to head. Should be a great game. Lincoln at Michigan has the potential to be a great one too, especially if Bloom plays like he did this past week. That's the great thing about this league. Every week you get great games...
