Absolutely, coach. You are a very accomplished coach with a great knowledge of the game. We will definitely contact you once the negotiation period begins.

-------------------------------

Let's talk to Patrick McCarthy.

-------------------------------

Hello, Patrick. This is GM Gravedigger from the San Antonio Knights. I just had a good conversation with your father about coaching openings here in San Antonio, and I'd love to talk to you as well.

Tell me about your years coaching...

Hello, I started coaching with my dad as a QB coach, then spent the past 3 years with him as his coordinator at UCLA.

I've always thought it'd be fun to tinker with a spread offense, but right now my dad and I have the same system.

If you were to run that spread would you use a balanced offense, or would you lean more on either passing or running?

Probably more to the pass, in the spread.  Depends on the personnel, really.

Within the system you and your father have been using are there any changes you like to see, not to the fundamental system but small changes that you think would work better?

That's an excellent mindset to have. Proving yourself over being given an opportunity too early shows that you have a great work ethic and are willing to show you deserve a head job.

Before I go do you have any questions for me?

Well, to be frank, I made FSU a defensive powerhouse. Before that I spent 10 years in Denver and 5 years in Washington.  I've had great running backs in my past, but defense is what I hang my hat on.

A 4-3 defense that relies on a strong front 4, so we do not have to blitz very often..

You make it sound so simple.  No, but I like my linebackers to be able to drop into coverage for when we are not blitzing.  I value coverage skills and speed over blitzing ability and strength.

a smart middle linebacker, a shutdown cornerback, a strong offensive line, and a strong defensive line.  Quarterbacks and running backs are a dime a dozen, and wide receivers you can find later in the draft, but those core positions are key, to me..
