New Laptop
« on: July 17, 2016, 02:34:28 AM »
I need a new laptop, but I don't know anything about computers. I'm looking for a mid-range sort for 5000RMB (I'll look up what that is in USD a bit later). Any advice would be appreciated.

Fantastic. 5000rmb is $750, apparently. My wife wants to do some occasional video editing and I want to be able to run my soccer sim without crashing.

In that case, red is a better bet.

I order most my electronics through Amazon. I'll research and read reviews of the products before making any purchase.

If ask Metro, he is a computer savvy guy. I always end up buying a more powerful computer than I need lol.

As a result, my 5 year old laptop is still only outdated in the effect of it running Windows 7

For video editing I will always at least initially advocate for a MAC. The software is better and the machines are built to handle it. That being said if you've already got the software side then you can get a better machine for the price point with Windows (it's the combo that gives MAC's the benefit).

Couple things:

Durability? Are you going to be lugging it to and from work? How long is it used for at a time?
Performance? What's your internet speed like? What else are you going to be doing on the machine while running the sim?
Users? Do you shut down every time or do you leave it in sleep mode? If the latter is it because you hate waiting for it to boot? What OS is out in China (IE: is it Windows 10 or are you guys running on Windows 95 still?)

I just bought a new laptop myself. I definitely recommend getting a small SSD to put the operating system on. It's resulted in a massive speed boost for me. My laptop loads in a matter of seconds now. I went i5, GTX 950M, 8GB ram, 128GB SSD with 1TB HDD. I tried to find a system that had all of that but ended up having to get it custom built. I probably cocked it up but games run really smoothly and look great on here. It did cost me around 700 though.

Usually, the laptop will stay at home but will occasionally be taken to work. I would buy a mac if they weren't such dicks about the price. Usage will be heavy for the next few months until I move to my new flat and buy a desktop. Probably downloading and watching movies while the sim runs... from totally legitimate sources. Internet speed makes dialup look fast. Two users. I leave my current computer on sleep mode because the boot up time is measured in minutes rather than seconds. Windows 10 is available but touchscreen doesn't interest me.

Cool - what'd you get?

Based on what you said most consumer grade machines would be okay. I'd second what Dazz said about an SSD. If you could get a small SSD with an I5 or I7 and a  decent chassis your set.

My wife changed her mind while the shop assistant was installing the software. She decided on a Lenovo Y700. The i5 version. It's black with a little red.

I'm going to buy a desktop PC for my home office once my new place is ready in a few months, so the laptop is mainly for my wife and occasionally taking to work. For my desktop, I'm going to take Dazz's specs and go one rung higher for each.

Not going to lie - save your money on the HDD and just get peripheral storage. There's no need to put a 1TB HDD in a machine when it costs less to have it as a portable drive that doesn't go kaput if you get malware from your legitimate sources.
