Can I speak to the reps for both Mr Hartley and Mr Wilder so that we may find out what contract details they are looking for.

Miss Callie, thanks for holding down the fort for me. I'm sure the agents of our remaining draft picks have been burning up the lines with their contract requests. Do we have them all at once so that we can knock them out right now, or do we need to go one at a time?

Whichever works best, so that we may catch up to the rest of the league.

Can I speak with LT please?

*****

LT, I wanted to talk to you now that the draft is over, and free agency is winding down. I think we have a solid base for this year, and for the future.

I think that with both Rojas and Meeks at the TE position, Freedman in the backfield, and Soriano out wide, we can throw a lot of different looks at teams. We can run a bunch of 2 TE sets, and teams won't know where we're going with the ball. We can line Rojas up in the slot, and allow Soriano and the other receivers to bask in the single coverage they'll undoubtably get, as Rojas draws defenders his way.

I'm pretty excited about our future. We have Hill under center, not only helping us on the field, but he's a de facto 3rd coach helping Doolittle grow. Between you, Harris, and Hill, the three of you will bring out the best in Doolittle.

What's your view on things?

We are definitely looking much improved!  Loving what I am seeing so far, but I wouldn't consider Giovanni Hill a 3rd coach type guy, he's still in his prime and not looking to be a stop-gap type player.

Yeah, I didn't mean it exactly as I said it. More of a role model for Doolittle and PSM to watch work, and pick up things that way. I'm glad you're as excited as I am LT. I'll talk to you soon.

Coach Maxfield please?

*****

Coach, what are your thought about the D post draft and free agency? What system are you looking at running, the 4-3?

We improved across the board but we are still thin at corner.  We're definitely set up for a 4-3 Defense, which is what I want to run anyways, and I think we should start Ash at FS, since we added Woods to start at SS.

Noted about Ash and Woods.

I picked up Edwards to try and build some depth at corner.  Based on what you saw from him at the combine, would you think he'd benefit from additional tackling training?  Football IQ?  Certainly not speed, that's for sure!

Miss Callie, can I verify my figures with yours please?

I have us at $149.75MM salary ($5.75MM under cap) and $38MM PR ($6MM under cap).

I have us at 39 players, with extra 'flex slots' filled by a QB, DE, and T.

GM Powers, After having our secretary tell you we were within compliance with the league's salary caps I discovered that one cell in our formula was not calculating and that was the contract of our QB Giovanni Hill..

With this revelation I see now that we are 5.25MM over the salary cap and 1MM over the PR cap, so I have struck a deal with the league office due to the mistake being on our side and not yours, and since the league's off-season has dragged on painfully slow this year, so we may use our amnesty clause to fix things before finalizing your lock in that you submitted to me.

I have decided to give you an additional 1MM in PR to cover the PR cost, but we will need to shed 5.25MM in salary, I suggest Amnestying Marcus Russell, cutting 4MM, leaving 1.25MM in salary, which we could likely get back by extending Bobby Meeks' 1 year deal to a 2 year contract, for 5MM per season in a reserve role, which I believe he would accept at this stage of his career.

I very much appreciate yours, and the league offices', assistance and understanding in this matter. I will make the moves immediately.

*****

Can I speak to Eli Harris please.

*****

Eli, I am calling you with an unfortunate set of circumstances. An accounting error that was just discovered has left us several million over the salary cap, instead of comfortably under it (as we believed we were). After a discussion with the owner of the franchise, it seems the moves that we need to make in order to rectify this involves a pair of your clients.

The first (and worst) blow is the fact that I am going to need to use the amnesty clause on your client Marcus Russell. I have no doubt he'll catch on somewhere else, if not pre-camp, then at some point during the season.

The second move is a restructuring of Bobby Meeks contract. We'd like to extend his contract to a 2 year deal, at $5MM per season. It gives him another year of security, plus an extra $2.5MM over the life of the deal compared to his current deal. I'd be more than willing to add a no amnesty clause to that deal, if you so desire.

Can we agree to those terms? I'd be in your debt, for sure.

It's a new day ladies and gentlemen.  It is a new day for Michigan football, and it is a new day for Mike Powers.  Now, I'm sure that there are plenty of you with lingering questions regarding my actions last season....looking to squeeze the last few drops of juice from that particular piece of fruit....and I will oblige you all.  Today.  Ask anything and everything you want about last season's incident, because after this press conference I will no longer be answering ANY questions regarding it.  I've learned from my mistakes, and I am looking to move on from them.

That being said, let's talk about the Monsters!  We had a great draft, and a fantastic camp.  Looking at the offense, Gio Hill is firmly in the middle of his prime, and we brought in a pair of big time weapons for him in Soriano and Rojas.  Freedman, also in his prime, will be joined by Hartley in the backfield....and let me tell you this Hartley guy is the real deal.  He had a helluva training camp.  Our offensive line also had a tremendous camp, and are looking good.

Turning to defense, Sanderson and Hagan are going to be the 1-2 punch that terrorizes opposing offenses, and I haven't even mentioned Wallace.  Rookies Steven Orlando, Marco Charlton, and TJ Edwards will make their fair share of plays as well.  We also brought in Alton Woods to shore up the back end.  Things are looking bright on D, that's for sure.

As for special teams, I have two words.  Blazing.  Speed.  The duo of Dover and Edwards will be the stuff of nightmares for opposing special teams coaches.

Our Coaching staff is superb, from Coach Bryce on down.  We are a team on the rise, and the excitement is contagious.

I'll open the floor to members of the media.

With only 9 players on your roster with over 5 years pro experience, you have built a very young team.  Do you believe this team can compete this year, or is this a multi-year process?

Why can't it be both? We certainly have the talent to compete for years to come....who's to say that won't start this season? Our goal is to play as well as we can, and win as many games as possible. We do that, the "W's" will come.

I expect that the Dragons will come in full of fire based on last seasons antics. It'll be 100% personal for them, and that's to be expected. The thing is, it's personal based in the actions of an executive....an executive who wasn't even on this team last season!....not on these players, or this city. Thus, when we get the boys ready to play Jersey, we'll be much more level headed, and much less emotionally involved than they are....hopefully, that gives us an advantage.

All in all, I expect 2 very difficult games against highly motivated competition.

Tough question. I fully believe we'll do much better than the 2 wins from last season. How much better? That's hard to say. Some would say 4-6 wins would be most realistic, but it's my personal goal to see us reach (at least) .500 on the year. That's what I'll be working towards moving forward.

I'm pretty excited too Coach. Gotta love this time of the year.

I read your report from camp, and I like what I see. Looks like the boys came to ball. One question though. Did anyone outperform their spot on the depth chart? I'd hate to start the year with talent on the bench, who should be in the game.

I'd say we've got the right guys on the depth charts.

Perfect.

Can you tell me a bit about Hartley and Phillips? I heard some chatter specifically about Hartley during the combine, which is why I took him. Based on your assessment after camp, it looks like we picked a winner.

What's their game? Speed? Power? All around?

Also, we had Dover work on his hands during camp. How much has he grown since last season, in your assessment?

Hartley is an all-around talent, strong, very fast, and decently agile, he just needs to keep learning the game and he'll be a number one in the league in no-time.  Phillips is a juke and jiver with his agility, but he isn't very powerful and doesn't have break away speed.  He's a solid contributor but I don't see him as anything more than a backup.

As for Dover, He is still really struggling to understand the route tree which is frustrating.  His hands aren't great, but they aren't as bad as they were before... he still needs a lot of work but if he can raise his football IQ and keep working on his hands, his athleticism will combine with that to make him a real threat.

Great information, thanks for that.

What about TJ Edwards? We know he has the speed, and we threw a lot at him at camp. What's your assesssment of him?

He is a gifted athlete, but he needs to work on his football craft quite a bit.  He has virtually no hands, and his tackling is terrible... he can get better though, so he has tons of upside.

Good to know, we'll work him hard and get him where he needs to be.

Any other players that you have anything to say about? Obviously excluding those you mentioned in your camp report.

Alright Coach, I'm going to have a quick word with Gio, then lock in for the preseason. We're gonna roll with all starters, so we can work on chemistry. Talk to you soon.

*****

Can I speak with Gio please?

*****

Gio great to see you, and great to have you as a member of this organization. I pursued you hard in the offseason, so to see you in Monsters colors is very sweet to me.

How was camp from your point of view? Developing chemistry with your weapons out there?

Training camp was good.  I enjoyed being on a team with an offensive minded head coach and I worked hard to lower my interception totals from last season... I like the young receivers we've got, just need some time to really build that trust and rapport with them, you know?
