Rule Change Discussion #11 : Cut Players
« on: October 27, 2017, 07:54:23 PM »
I propose that any player that demands to be cut after the trade deadline should sit out the rest of the season. If a player doesn't get a move they want before the deadline, they shouldn't be able to stir up trouble and find a way onto a playoff team after the deadline. This rule wouldn't affect all players cut by GMs after the deadline, just the ones who request to be cut. A certain GM is missing out on the considerable value of a player simply because said player wants to play in the playoffs (despite whatever excuse he's using). That's not right and it sets a dangerous precedent.

It is totally at the players discretion if they want to demand to be released, traded or whatever the case may be.  Whether or not a GM grants their wish is solely up to the GM.  I assume your proposal is based off of what happened in Music City, but that is an isolated incident.  Therefore I do not see this particular issue being big enough to warrant any type of rule change.

Is that better Kirk?

If this was for GM eyes only, I'd tell you to go fuck yourself. As the transcripts of these conversations are open to the press, I'll simply point out that just saying "no" or variations thereof does not constitute a contribution to a discussion. I see no good reason for allowing a player to.switch teams after the deadline. As things are, we have a cap that's not a real cap and deadline that's not a real deadline.

Whether or not a GM grants their wish is solely up to the GM.

... and the HIFLPA and the league office, who have both had a key role in the recent case.

Talon sets the rules for the players, not us.

That was a situation that Rebel had to deal with, and he didn't deal with it well. We've all been there.

That's part of the game, but to be fair, Zach brought that upon himself when he went 100% pass.

Then don't let them stir up trouble. As a GM its YOUR job to make sure your team is more/less happy. For example... Martavis Bryant of the Pittsburgh Steelers wants to be traded right now. He is causing drama. Either get rid of room within the confines of your options or don't. That's decisions that we need to make as GMs.

My answer is a NO to this rule.

I say no and just that becuase its such an obvious choice. Its an extremely isolated rule that just suddenly came into play. Had rebel told him to sit and get paid it would be a non issue.

Part of the game

I agree with kirk but not the entire season, maybe a two game penalty if he wants out and you cover no salary

I understand the spirit from where this rule comes from, but it's still a hard 'no' from me.  If a player demands to be released it is usually due to the escalation of events from a GM standpoint.  Don't corner your players, and this won't be an issue.

I know there's zero chance of changing people's minds in these discussions, so just let this serve as my formal protest against Carlson signing anywhere this season (why would you sign a player who threatened to score against his own team anyway?). It stinks of a GM asking an agent or player to stir up trouble to become available after the trade deadline. In my opinion, Carlson playing another game this season is grubby and brings the entire game into disrepute.

Did the player stir up trouble, or did the GM who benched him without warning?

This.

Had Rebel spoken to the player before going the 100% route, he may have been disgruntled but would have at least understood. It was gm handling error rather than a player issue.

Saying that, I would frown upon any team deciding to take him on for the rest of the season

Well certainly, if Carlson is now a trouble player...any GM who signs him must now bear those consequences.

Had the player not stormed out before I was done talking with him, Id have told him he was suspended.

So, to you, I kindly say eat a bag of crap. :)

Speaking to him beforehand might have done...

I don't like an entire season but how about a stipulation like can't be signed by a division foe or has two sit at least 3 games

I vote no. I vote no to the initial idea. I vote no to any modifications to the idea both current and future. It's a bad rule proposal. You don't want player's demanding to be released after the deadline, be better. You can't just pick and choose which players this applies to either, that's just stupid. The rule has to apply to EVERY player cut after the deadline

GMs can just up and leave a team like Cleveland for no logical reason other than the situation fits them better, but a player can't even request to be released from a situation that doesn't fit them in your mind?

I also won't bring up that with this rule, you would have never signed Trevor Jose, because he was cut mid-season and signed with you Kirk, so a bit of "i got to do it but I dont want anyone else to benefit from it."

Guys, keep in mind that Talon wants us to play and wants us to have fun. The only time will see a demand like this is due to an ongoing/neglected or poorly handled issue. I know for a fact that no player will demand a trade on a whim and mess up a GM's team for no reason. It's not how Talon operates. He wants us here and pour's hours into this because it's fun.

It's part of the game. Overcome and adapt ... or don't. I made a decision with Carlson and it backfired. Anything is possible as long as you can convince Talon. That's part of the fun. Don't overthink things.
