Scouting Suggestion
« on: January 30, 2018, 01:27:26 AM »
As I'm bored while waiting for everyone to lock in, I've been thinking about about scouting and the use of the scouting director. At the moment, the scouting director doesn't really add much to the mechanics of the game. My suggestion is to move the additional combine report that was introduced this year away from the combine and have a version of it during the season instead. The quality and specialisation of your scouting director could affect the number, focus and quality of the reports you get. For example: An average scout gives you around 3 reports on one position whereas an A grade scouting director might give you 5 reports on one position or 3 reports on two positions (the number of reports is an illustration and the exact number isn't important in this discussion at the moment). I think that this will move some of the scouting load away from the combine where Talon gets swamped and gives the scouting director a more important role.

An extra wrinkle could be that you tell the scout what kind of player you want instead of a position and he gives a summary of a few guys he thinks could fit your need. Eg: you need a pass rusher and the scout suggests a LB, DE and Safety who could fill the role. Obviously if you ask for a QB who runs like Ortega, passes like Pruitt and has Trevor Jose's leadershp qualities, the scout would spend the PR money you give him to take a few weeks holiday in the Bahamas before telling you that the player you want doesn't exist.

I actually kind of like this. I've always thought that an overview of the draft class early from your scouting directors perspective would be great (even for a PR cost like Kirk says). + it'd get things out of the way early for T rather than having 500 scouting report to do come the off-season.

Good suggestion Kirk.

I like it, and I was floored with that last bit, but I don't want anything else that would add more work to the MOD which ultimately takes away from the quality of information I am already getting or takes the MOD longer than needed. Now if you are suggesting this type of quality information that is a direct connection to our scout be added instead of an umbrella position information grab, than I like it.  We would have to make it a limit trait system, to limit what guys can ask for; ie Ortega,Jose,Pruit skills. But guys here are creative and I for one know I like trying things and pushing things so I can see that mix becoming a headache.

Example someone ask: I want a pass rusher with equal strength to Wilkinson from the left side and specializes in third down run stopping.

Anything that limits the "shot in the dark" scouting/drafting process we have now I'm in favour for as long as it'd wouldn't kill Talon to do. Eliminating the extra report seems like shifting the load more evenly over the season which seems reasonable in theory. Dilly dilly.

The way to shift the load from having 500 reports to do during the offseason is to actually scouting during the season.  As the GM part of your job is to identify throughout the season areas of weakness on your team.  That way you know what positions you need to scout.  So then you start scouting.  Sure, you're not sure who you're going to lose in free agency, but again its part of the game in both real life and HIFL.  It's all about contingency planning and the need to scout other positions besides your areas of weakness.  That way your scouting is spread out through the season and at then during the offseason Talon doesn't have to do so many.  It could be me and I could be totally wrong, but I am of the opinion that the combine scouting is a way to help us in the event that we completely flame out in our scouting individual players.  It's a fail safe so that we at least know the top players are.

I don't see how this would decrease work for Talon...the simple way is for GMs to scout during the season instead of waiting until the draft.

That is exactly what Kirk is proposing ... something you have to do during the year (on your bye week maybe)

I don't know how the scouting works in the sim, but Talon did something like this for me when I dumped Cotter to the APL. I paid for a scouting net of APL LBs and got some reports on guys with similar styles to Cotter. I think something like this is more likely to encourage mid-season scouting. It doesn't even have to be detailed reports if that's too much work. It could be a list of players your scout thinks are worth taking a closer look at.

The more I hear it the more I like it. I think ultimately it could cut down on how much reports are done at the end. It makes everyone have to keep track and files on their own players and not be wily nilly. Gets teams paying attention earlier.
