Thank you Sandy, I appreciate the stats from last year and our current team sheet; I'm looking forward to doing great things here in VA Beach.

Would you please call David Pearce up to my office when you get a moment?

Mr. Pearce, my name is Talon Wilkinson,  It's a pleasure to meet you.

We're going to be expected to work together very closely over the next few seasons, so I thought it would be best to make sure we're on the same page when it comes to our baseball philosophy.

With our ballpark, clearly we're going to be benefiting from the amount of left handed hitters on the roster and I plan to keep a good number of lefties in the lineup as we go forward, but I'd just like to hear what you really feel is the best way to win in baseball?  Do you lean good pitching beats good hitting, or would you rather manage a team that is going to score more runs than the other team and just rely on that run production?

Hello sir, it's great to finally meet you. While it's important to have a good rotation, I am someone that relies on sabermetrics. So for me, it's far more important to have a potent offense and I think we got one here. I also like to be aggressive on the basepaths and manufacture runs that way.

I love that aggressive mindset.  Now I've already submitted my scouting to check out our team in great detail, but is there a position you believe we critically need to upgrade at before locking in for the start of the regular season?

I've got a lot of suitors for a couple of our players, mainly our new depth and surplus of talent at 1st Base, but if I know going in that my manager would like to see an upgrade made, I can try my best to find a deal that is best suited for that.

We really need a number 2 starter. Coronado and Witte are both #3's, so if you can maneuver a deal to get a solid number 2, that would be beneficial. We could also use a better starting second basemen, but with how good our lineup is, we can overcome that if need be.

I used to man the hot corner once upon a time, so I know the value of a good skipper, so Skip it is!

If you don't mind, I'd like to pick your brain and get your opinion on the rest of the coaching staff, I'll get introduced to them personally a little later once everyone is settled in and ready to report, but if you could give me your thoughts on them now I can make a majority of my assessment off of that.

Also, as to not take you by surprise, I've made a few roster moves with plans to get younger and look for some players with a little more upside on the reserve roster and at Second.  Hopefully those moves sit well with you and the rest of the squad.

Between you and I, they both don't meet the expectations we want to take this franchise too. I think we can do better at both a hitting and pitching coach.

Well I appreciate the honesty Skip, you can always be candid with me about our organization. I like to be considered an accountable GM, and I want the same from everyone from reserve player to staff member.  What type of hitting and pitching coach do you feel would be best to work with you? I'll interview and look for guys who fit and see what we can do to upgrade and find people you feel are good fits.

I can recommend a few coaches I think could slot into this team and work well with me and the talent we have here. Tom Owen is a coach known for getting the best out of power pitchers, he was the manager of the defunct Savanah Peaches. As for a hitting coach, I would recommend Taylor Ehrenfeld. We played with each other back in my playing days and he has a knack for developing young players.

Excellent, I appreciate the recommendations.  I'll get on the horn with them both as soon as we finish up here.

Thanks a lot Skip, I've got a deal in the works that could remedy some of our pitching concerns and I've got a few free agent targets in mind once we get the green-light to make some offers.

I'm looking forward to working with you and winning championships here in VA Beach, Skip.

Sandy, could you place a call to Tom Owen, I'd like to discuss bringing him on board as our Pitching Coach.

You come with a high recommendation from our Skipper, so I'd like to offer you a position on our staff as the Pitching Coach on a 3 year contract at $2.5MM per season.  What do you say Coach?

Outstanding!  Welcome to VA Beach Coach!  I'll let you get squared away with our secretary Sandy to arrange travel out to the facility. We'll meet face to face once you're settled in.  Take care coach!

Sandy, I'd like to get in touch with Taylor Ehrenfeld for our Hitting Coach position.   Thank you!

Mr. Ehrenfeld, GM Talon Wilkinson with the VA Beach Tide.  Our manager Dave Pearce tells me that he'd love to bring you on board our staff as the hitting coach.  Skip tells me you two played together in the pros, and he believes you'll do great things with our young developing players, so if you're interested I'd like to bring you on board for 3 years at $2MM per season.  What do you say?

Outstanding Coach, I can't wait to get you here to the facility and shake your hand.  Welcome to The Tide!

Sandy, could you get me back in touch with David Pearce?

Hey Skip!  I've signed Coaches Owen and Ehrenfeld to three year deals, and I'd like to extend your offer to reflect that same tenure.  What would you say to a 3 year deal at $3.5MM per season?

Proud to have you on board for the long haul Skip!  Now I shouldn't have to bother you with anything else until after we get through a little bit of player acquisition.

If any free agents stand out to you as either good or guys we should avoid, you can shoot me an email and I'll be sure to take note!

Enjoy the rest of your off-season Dave.

Sandy, Could I speak to the Skipper again please?

Hey Skip, looking at my targets for free agency, I'm thinking of sending newly acquired outfielder George Bailey and one of our relievers, Rich Oceguera down to the reserve roster to make enough space for the additions I am hoping to make.

I just wanted to check with you prior to making any moves to see if you thought I'd be rocking the boat too hard here in our first off-season.. Secondly, as much as I like some of our bench depth, I am not sure if going into the season without a backup catcher on the active roster is a good idea.

Do we have a player on the active roster who has the skills to play catcher in a pinch, or should I prioritize adding a catcher to the bench before locking in for the start of the season; and how does Walsh do as far as durability? I saw he started 43 games last season while we had a few other guys in 50+ games, just wanted to see if Walsh was hurt or if its just regular and more frequent rest due to the rigors of catching.

I think sending Bailey and Oceguera to the reserve roster would be fine. Pablo Perez is the only other catcher we have on the roster and no other player has the ability to slot into that position. For Walsh it was just rest for the time he missed as the schedule was done different before the restructure this season. I don't think it's important to have two catchers on the active roster, but we definitely should always have one on the reserve roster at least. That's up to you though, Talon.

Hey Skip, I'm sure you've seen the news by now but we've made a few moves in free agency and via trade.  While I know it was tough to see us ship out two of our three first base prospects from the last draft, I'm hoping that the additions we've made will better shape this roster for short and long term success.

With the majority of our roster filled out now, I'm working on our line ups.  With that being said, I'd love to hear your suggestions for how we approach our order 1-9. My plan is to slot Cook in at LF and have Mann playing as our primary DH.

My initial thought was something like this:

1. L - Sam Cook (LF)
2. L - Jared Mann (DH)
3. L - Justin York (CF)
4. R - Josh Mahurin (3B)
5. L - Eric Thomas 1B)
6. L - Jonathan Guaderrama (RF)
7. R - Mike Sewell (2B)
8. R - Chris Walsh (C)
9. R - Dave Weigand (SS)

Now I am open to swapping guys around especially considering we are running with a 5-4 Lefty/Righty split.  So if you want to move Mahurin up to break up some of our lefties, or move the bottom of the order around a bit to get a lefty in there I am open to discussing and considering whatever you and the staff think is the best approach.

In my opinion, I don't quite think Cook is ready for a lead off spot yet. Sure like the potential he shows, but I wouldn't pull that trigger until we see him hit the ball. Maybe if he impresses in the preseason, we can slot him into that spot. Here is my ideal lineup:

1. R - Dave Weigand (SS)
2. L - Justin York (CF)
3. R - Josh Mahurin (3B)
4. L - Jared Mann (DH)
5. L - Eric Thomas 1B)
6. L - Jonathan Guaderrama (RF)
7. R - Sam Cook (LF)
8. L - Mike Sewell (2B)
9. R - Chris Walsh (C)

"Hello everyone, I'm sure you have a lot of questions, but before we get to them let me just say a few things real quick.

...My name is Talon Wilkinson, and I am excited to be working as the General Manager of the VA Beach Tide here in the PBL.  As a former third basemen myself, baseball has long been a passion of mine.  This game is unlike any other and I am excited to be apart of what will surely be an amazing season here in Virginia Beach.

We made a lot of moves during my first off-season, trading away two of the first basemen that were drafted before my arrival, acquiring some firepower to our rotation and also a lot of young talent that I am confident will be a part of the long term future of this franchise.   I just want it to be know to our fan base that I am not a GM who makes moves for the sake of making moves.  Everything we do here from trades to re-signings, to reserve roster spots are calculated moves that we have made and will make to insure that we do what we can to win both this season and in future seasons.

I don't come here with the plan to bounce from team to team, it is to come in and establish myself and this franchise as the premier team in this league.  I'm not promising championships every season, but I want this team to be a threat to raise the trophy at the end of any season.  Establishing a culture of trust, respect, and hard work goes a long way and that is what I aim to do.  We want to build around our core of young talent and we want to lean on our veterans to help lead the way to the top.

All in all I just can't wait to get to the diamond and watch our guys swing the bat against live competition, and hear the crowd at Northrop Grumman Stadium, because I know they are going to bring the same passion and energy that we do to the ballpark.

Now, we've got some pre-set goals in mind, We are looking to make the playoffs this season and also win a playoff series, and I believe with the talent we have on this roster and the coaching we have, we are going to do just that.

I'd like to go ahead and open up the floor to questions at this time, if you have any.

I'm glad you feel the same way I do Skip, it's going to be a very exciting season!

Now, I am a firm believer in giving the players time to get into their comfort zones especially when it comes to our great game of baseball.  So as long as you feel the same way, I really don't anticipate doing a lot of major line up changes unless something major stands out on your end.    That being said, if you see something you'd like to optimize, I'll definitely support your suggestions since you are seeing a lot more of the guys than I am on a daily basis.

So, is there anything we need to cover before we get to see our team take the field?

I don't think so boss. If we had an arm we wanted to see in action as starter then maybe I'd expand my starter rotation to 4 or 5 arms instead of 3. But I'm not sure we have that arm in Tyler Davis. So whatever you want to do in terms of spring training, I'm with it.

Now, I know that we have a crowded infield as it is with our bench players, but do you think it would be beneficial to give Correa some at bats during spring ball just to get him some extra work and give us a chance to see him in the line up?  I'm really a fan of his potential, and while I don't think he's ready for a main roster spot yet unless we have some injuries, I do see him as a long term piece on our roster.  Your thoughts?

Absolutely,  I also think Chris Lynn and Travis Messina should probably see some time too.

Outstanding, that will also make sure we don't over work our position players during the spring.  How would you suggest I put that into our lock in line up?

We play 12 games, so you can just state how many games you want certain players to play. If you want it against specific opponents, you can annotate that as well.

Excellent, thanks for that Skip..

I'm thinking we'll do the reserve players subbing into the line up together as a group on every third day, that should hopefully give them a chance to get some at bats against the lower tier pitchers from our opponents, and give some rest to the starters, including the final game of Spring Training.

To make like easier on the powers that be, do you think we keep the line ups the same and swap our reserves into the same position that they are replacing?  Or would you prefer to slot them specifically based on skill sets?

Easiest would be to just set all lineup decisions to me and I'll take it from there.

POST SPRING TRAINING

1. Talk about how you feel spring training went. Who impressed you the most? Who did you feel under-performed?

Spring Training is always an exciting time.  The scores don't always mean much, but the playing time and knocking the rust off is as important as any other part of the season.  We got to see our team on the field as a unit for the first time against real opposition and we got a chance to see what we were made of.  We saw extra innings, we saw close games, we saw some that weren't nearly as competitive... all in all it was a good cornucopia of data to take back and process.  If I were handing out some spring training awards, I'd have to say Mann, Thomas, and York all earn that praise.  E.T. lead us in HRs, Mann finished the spring with our highest batting average, and York combined great average along with driving in a team high 9 RBI.. We had a lot of our guys earn player of the day honors throughout the two weeks of ball as well so a big pat on the back for all of our guys really.    Pitching-wise, King Felix and Frankie both showed how great they can be for us as our top two starters, Javy Coronado really ave us a good spark out of the pen, and and Fino worked his tail off to end the spring with an solid ERA.

As far as under-performers, I don't take much stock in a slow start in spring, we've seen it before in this sport, guys can go 0-fer in the spring and then win the MVP when its all said and done, so any of our guys who are looking at a batting average below the Mendoza line or pitching with an inflated ERA after a handful of exhibition games are going to hopefully find motivation in their slow start and turn it into a very productive season once they find their stroke.

2. Are you going to make any roster changes before the first series of the season?

Currently, I'm happy to leave the majority of personnel decision up to our Skipper, he has the experience and know-how to make those decision based on what we've seen throughout training camp and the Spring games.

3. As the season gets underway, where do you project this team to finish in the standings?

We're always going to aim for the top, we want to first win our division, then aim for the Conference, and then go for the League Championship.  So look for us to work our rear ends off to win this division.

4. Talk about your first opponent and the key to beating them in the three-game series.

We start the season with a road series in Austin, its going to be important for us to start this season off on the right foot. Austin has a lot of weapons, we've got to watch out for their big bats, and one way to do that is to the take the bat out of Cruz's hands, we'll leave the strategy talk for behind closed doors, but there is definitely a way to work around a guy who's driven in 20 and knocked 7 out of the park during the Spring.

It's going to be an exciting way to start the season, and I can't wait to get to that first pitch... Any questions?

There is an old expression that says "Opinions are like assholes, and everyone's got one." and that's the case here.

GM Gravedigger is going to tout his staff over anyone's, that's his job as the cheerleader of his squad, but if you want to look at the data, you might decide for yourselves who's staff is the better of the two.  I was very happy with our bullpen this spring, and while I could start comparing ERA's from our guys to there, I'll just say that I'm confident in our ability to prove it on the diamond this week.  I just hope nothing comes of these rumors of PED usage, because I want a good clean series, and I don't want the stink of scandal clouding the result no matter who comes out on top this week.

Alright, time for it all to count now. We looked good for the most part, but Ely concerns me as our #3. We might want to look at Javy or Warrington taking that spot.

I was thinking the same thing Skip.  I think Ely has the potential to become a solid piece in our rotation, but I really felt like Javy stood out working some extended innings and keeping his ERA low enough to merit getting the nod as our third starter.

I like Warrington's work as well, but with Javy having worked the rotation in the past, I think he should have the first shot at holding down the back end of our rotation.

I saw that Sam Cook really struggled in the spring, but I meant what I said to the press, I believe slow starts to the spring are moot, but do you have a different opinion?

I think maybe moving Cook into the 9 spot might be beneficial. I like his speed at the back end, but I agree about overreacting to bad and good hitting in the spring. Letís see what happens when the real season starts.
