We're doing good, we're doing good. Having looked at the roster and stats from last season we definitely have some nice players to build off of going forward to keep this train going. We have some nice starting pitching, and a few solid bats in our line up. Definitely things to be excited about.

One thing I wanted to do, was get some input from you. I mean, I know I'm the GM, but I like to make sure we are on the same page.

So tell me...if you had a shopping list of what you want to see brought in for the upcoming season, what would one or two of those things be? You were around this team last year so you know more about the potential deficiencies.

I'd say we could improve at first, third, and catcher. Our depth is lacking as well. Luckily we have a strong pitching staff to overcome those deficiencies.

Ah glad to know we are on the same page here. Looking at the stats those were some spots I knew we needed to improve, as well as some useful youth depth.

Now with that out of the way...tell me more about your style of management. What do you prefer in a team. Power bats? Pitching? Speed? That kind of stuff.

I lean slightly to a more potent line-up, but the pitching staff we have here is pretty darn good. I'm a situational manager, so I like to have a variety to choose from, especially in our depth. Pinch running, pinch hitting, bunting, it all just depends on what the analytics say.

Excellent seems like we are on the right page. I’m looking into a few options to help out lineup so hopefully it will be more potent then what we’ve had here. Add that to or pitching and man, we’ve got something good cooking.

Are there any players on the team we should avoid cutting or trading at all costs? Obviously I’m not going to cut the big boys, but if there’s some fringe players you’d like to see kept around, I’m all ears for that. I don’t want to mess too much with the chemistry but I would like to make this team better.

I like our team, so I am not going to advocate to cut anyone. Sure there is a few players that could be moved if you have someone in mind that'll improve the team. But those decisions are yours boss. I'll coach whoever is on the team going into spring camp.

Speaking of, are you able to tell me a little about each of them? I understand that they may still be detained taking their photos for their ID badges for this season.

We had a really good up and coming coach in Jon Loock. Really has worked our pitching staff well and they all seem to really like his technique. We'll have to really worry about another team stealing him from us a manager at some point, although even he would admit, he's not quite ready for that leap yet. Mike Figueras has a knack for coaching up power hitters and he too would make a great manager, even now really. So we're lucky to have what we have.

Excellent. I mean, not excellent that we may lose them, but nice to know have such quality on our staff.

I see that you - and the entire staff for that matter - are on one year deals. Are you open to extension talks or would you rather wait and see how things go working together before anything gets done?

Excellent. What I had in mind, was adding a year to the deal. Basically making it a 2 year deal and then we can go from there.

How would that sound to you?

Excellent. I will fax the papers through. I will likely extend the same offer to Loock and Figueras, try and keep the band together.

As for the team, I’ve moved some pieces around to try and help plug our holes. I think Braswell has the chance to be a nice power bat for us, and the players I cut opens up for some free agent signings.

Is there anything else you’d like to discuss about the team at this time?

They'd both agree to one year extensions, but outside that, just looking get this team back on the field.

You and me both. I’m hopeful we can keep this team competitive and get closer to that title. For now I think we will wait until free agency to add a few more pieces to our team.

Alright coach, as we head towards finalizing things I wanted to get your opinion on our lead off spot. Typically I like to put our best hitters in the middle which would mean Merica and Estrada but I wanted to get your thoughts. Who do you see as the lead off hitter for this team?

Actually coach, hold on one second there. I’ve got some free agent calls to make.

——————

Kara, Agent Zazoo Shazam please.

——————

Mr. Shazam, how are you doing? I’d like to bring your client RP Jason Kozubal on board here. My idea is that he’d get the chance to compete for a main roster spot and if he impresses, he’d make the team out of camp.

So what would you say to a 3 year deal worth $2.5 million?

————

Kara, Coach Farley again please.

————

Sorry about that coach, had some business to take care of.

As you’ve likely seen, we have made some moves to give us a bit more talent in our lineup. We brought in Braswell, Diaz and Altamirano to give us some extra pop.

So I go back to my question from earlier...who do you see as the leasoff hitter? And as a follow up, is there another position you’d like us to bring in someone else to upgrade?

I like Fedorchak as the leadoff guy, being able to utilize that speed. I think you've made some moves to make us a little more well rounded. I think we have a nasty middle of the lineup and still have a good 1-2 punch with our starters, Nice work, boss.

Thanks coach. Just trying to make this team into a winner.

One last thing 8 wanted to pick your brain on...DH. Do you have a preference to what kind of player slots in there? As the team looks, it could be someone like Hudgins, Smith or Mest to start things off for pre season, if we don’t want to put one of our big bats there and take them off the field.

I actually like Fedorchak as the DH, but Mest and Hudgins are fine options as well. It just depends, we can always ride the hot bat.

Ah sounds good. I had initially brought Fedorchak in to compete for a starting job at third, but we could always roll him out at DH and leave Varela there.

If you want to go Fedorchak at third, then I'd like the power Mest has in as the DH or if you want more of a contact guy, you could go Hudgins.

Take care coach.

—————

Kara, can you get Dana Boras on the line?

—————

Dana, how are you doing? I wanted to ask you about your client SP Todd Ruffini. I was wondering if he might be interested in signing on here in Boise. He would likely start on the reserve roster, but could find his way to the main roster later this season or next. I’d be offering up a 2 or 3 year deal worth $1.5 million, to come here and be able to work with a great pitching coach to help him take the next step.

Thank you all for joining us here today.

First I’d like to thank Mr. William Skinner for giving me this opportunity. The goals were clearly set, and after what I feel was a successful training camp, we find ourselves ready to embark on a new season. It will be different then some in the past, as we’ve made some bold moves to give us a bit more depth on offense while maintaining our pitching staff. I feel like we’ve assembled a great team here, one that can get over the hump that has been standing between the Elk and the top of the pile.

As of now, I will take any questions that the press may have.

You were one of the teams that was wheeling and dealing in the offseason. Johnny Franks was a big part of the success of this team over the past few seasons, who do you feel needs to step up now that he's in Virginia Beach?

I don’t know if anyone needs to step up, exactly. The players we do have on the pitching side are going to follow their development and progression and get better, and our improved offense will help out in that regard by taking some of the pressure off of the pitching staff to be perfect.

Damn straight Coach. We made some bold moves to hopefully make that possible.

The one thing we didn’t discuss in detail was our line up...so now that you’ve seen what I’ve put down in camp, what are your thoughts on it? Any part of the order you want to switch around?

I'd probably start Smith at SS and Estrada at 2B instead of starting Thorp. But that is things we can plug and play with in spring training. Outside of that, it's pretty close to how I'd have it set-up.

That was the one spot I was unsure of. I didn’t know how close Thorp was to being ready. We can definitely play around with that and give them all time.

Are there any other players from the reserve that you’d like to see in action during the pre season?
