It was great to see them bounce back from our last series and that opening game. Pulled it together and really gave us a nice series win. And Witte with that pitching performance in game three was great to see.

Was also nice to see Estrada get some hits. Heís not all the way out yet but heís starting to put the bat on the ball.

I really like Estrada in that six hole. If he struggles it doesnít cripple us as bad as it did in the 3 and 4 hole and when he delivers, it stills hugely beneficial.

Me too Coach. Iím going to leave him there for right now and see if that doesnít continue to spark the team.

Beyond that I donít think thereís too much else to address really. We are playing some good baseball.

I wanted to ask you about Tyler Coggin. Lately his pitching has been good but he has that one bad inning that seems to doom him. Is that more just the learning curve of a young pitcher? Iím not looking to shake up our rotation any, but just wanted to see how you saw things.

There's a little frustration in his body language, but it helps that we keep winning so at least he doesn't feel like he's letting his teammates down completely. I'm confident he'll turn things around, much like Estrada.

Yeah Iím not about to yank him out of the rotation spot or anything, his stuff is just too good when heís on. Luckily we have a good team behind him to pick him up if need be.

Alright one last thing I wanted to discuss...the flurry of trades. Not so much whatís been done but whether or not thereís anything we should look to do. Offensively we could use another power bat, maybe at 3rd, but Other then that and maybe some relief depth I donít see much of a glaring weakness.

I don't think there is anything worth doing to be honest. I mean if you can go out and get a Tokujiro Maeda for as cheap as Virginia Beach did, then by all means. But I like the team we have assembled.

Thanks for your time coach, I will let you get to preparing this week.

óóóóó

Kara, can you send Giovanni Merico up to see me please?

óóóóó

Giovanni, how are you doing? I just wanted to take a chance and commend you on your strong start to the season. Youíve done a great job keeping our lineup going. How are you finding the season so far?

1. Discuss the latest series. What was one thing you loved and one thing you hated?

We took two of three from San Diego and got another fantastic outing from Witte. I loved what the team did. We didnít let past losses get to us and kept playing like we did to start the season. Coggin bounced back from a few rougher starts and our offence has been hitting well all year. I think the only thing I hated was losing that middle game, but Iíve loved what we have done so far.

2. Talk about at least one piece of news.

The bold move GM Powers made paid off in the end. If it hadnít I wonder if everything would have been cheery for him and his team or if there would have been some questioning of any future moves he made. But it worked so anything else is moot.

3. With all-star voting underway, what is one name that surprises you towards the top and what is one name you feel is not getting enough love?

I think the one name that has surprised me is Manny Diaz. When we acquired him, we knew he was talented, but he is having a better year then we probably thought he would be having and is sitting on top of the catching list.

And while I would love to see Giovanni Merico get more of the love he deserves, one guy who isnít on the top three for his position is Harry McCoubrey. Heís been having a good year for us in center and deserves more love.

4. Talk about your opponent this week. What player on the opposing team do you have to worry about the most?

We head to Virginia Beach to take on the Tide. Itís going to be a tough week for us but itís not a week where we canít win three games. Weíve got the bats going, our arms are pitching well...weíve got everything clicking and if we can limit what they are able to do, we should be able to walk out with the series.

Huge series this week, Virginia Beach looked really good with their new players so we will have to be at our best. But I know we can beat them.

1. Discuss the latest series. Was it how you expected it to go?

Virginia Beach is a great team, so I knew it would be a hard battle to come away with that series win. We got off on the right foot with Coggin spinning an absolute gem to keep us in the game where we capitalized in the 9th to reward him. Games two and three were a different story, but I think there were some positives we can take out of it.

2. Talk about at least one piece of news.

This Golden State/London series is going to be exciting for everyone in the PBL community. Fans, rival executives, other teams...when two of the top teams go head to head like that everyone takes notice. I will take notice because they are two teams we are chasing. Two teams we need to gain ground on. Itís a crazy Coastal Conference, so any bit of info you can get is helpful.

3. Who are cheering for to win the College World Series?

While I will have my eye on all of them for scouting purposes, I will be cheering for Texas Tech. Everythingís bigger in Texas, even their victory celebrations.

4. Talk about your opponent this week. What will you need to improve upon to take the series?

We head to Austin to take on the Drillers in what I suspect will be a great series. For us to come out on top, we will need to limit their opportunities and pitch well while making the most of our. Are bats have the ability to break out and we will need to do so to really make the most out of this series

No doubt and I think we will. I was very impressed with some of the displays this past series. Coggin really pitches well and Altamirano continues to hit the ball well. Definitely sets us up well going forward to this series.

We are showing that we continually win these player trades we've made this season. Altimirano and Witte have been awesome for us and while we did lose some talent, it's in areas where we're already strong. So good job boss.

Itís been a team effort so far, from top to bottom. Our biggest roster move may have been starting Smith, and itís worked out well, and thatís thanks to you.

Moving on. Austin, we should be able to get the series from them. Again, I donít think there are any changes that we need to make.

Can't think of any changes that would make us better. Although I would like to switch out Mest with Santiago against left handed pitchers.

Given what weíve gotten out of Mest this season, Iím open to making that switch. Would that change the lineup versus lefties at all? Like perhaps placing Santiago at 9 and Diaz at 8? Place some speed down there.

1. Discuss the latest series.

1-2. Lately we seem to have hit a bit of a skid where we get great pitching but our bats get shut down. Even though we didnít win the series against Austin, we did manage to get one win so it wasnít terrible, just not the result we wanted. We are still in the thick of the wild card race, but we need to find our footing.

2. Talk about at least one piece of news.

Itís tough when a record is set against you, but man...14Ks in one game is pretty impressive. We just had no answer for what Upson was throwing. He found the way to exploit us and took advantage of it.

3. With the creativity some teams have explored such as starting your ace in Game 3 and using an "opener" approach. If you've used one of those strategies, will you continue them? If you haven't, will you start? Why and why not?

We might discuss it. As I noted, we seem to have hit a skid so maybe itís time to try something to give us a bit of a new look.

4. Talk about your opponent this week. Which one of the games is the most important to win for your team?

New Orleans comes to town. They are more of a challenge then people think so we need to be ready. And while all of our games are important to win, Iíd say the most important is game one, get off to a strong start and ride that momentum into game two and game three.

We definitely should be able to handle them.

But let me ask coach...as we get close to the trade deadline is there anywhere you see we need an upgrade ASAP? We have a few spots where I wouldnít mind a little more production, but I donít know if itís levels of needing to make drastic changes.

1. Discuss the latest series.

It was a close one against New Orleans. We dropped the first one but then came back and won the next two. The team played well in all theee games and never gave up in that first one. We started to get things going late but just couldnít overcome the Brass. The other two games we had a bit better run production going and our pitching managed to hold them at bay long enough to capture the wins.

2. Talk about at least one piece of news.

GM Gooch being tabbed to take over in Tokyo was interesting, especially considering it is a move that happened within our division. Seeing GM Kirk step aside was a shock and then it didnít take long for Gooch to jump right into his seat. Intriguing they chose someone in their division, but I guess they saw something on Gooch that they wanted to bring to Tokyo.

3. Will you be a buyer, seller or stay put as trade deadline approaches?

I will likely make some calls, survey the land and see whatís out there as far as deals go, but Iím not going to make stupid deals for the sake of making deals.

4. Talk about your upcoming series.

Funnily enough, we head out to take on Tokyo and see how their team reacts to the GM switch. On the field Tokyo is a tough team to beat but a team we can beat. Iím not worried about that. We just need to execute the way we have been for the majority of the year and we should have a good chance at picking up he series win and maybe even the sweep.

We did a nice job battling in that series, but we'll need to be better against Tokyo.

We definitely will. We will have to be great on both sides of things in Tokyo. They arenít going to be easy to beat.

Iíve been having some potential trade talks, but outside of that, is there anything we can really change to give us a better shot?

Outside of testing out some reserve bodies like David Scott or TJ Warner... no, I think we're set.

1. Discuss the latest series.

That was a fantastic series. To take two of three from one of the top teams in the league is great. Our offence made sure they were ready to swing one the games started, especially Altimirano and Merico. Our pitching was great for us too, with Witte and Coggins pitching really well. It keeps us right in the heart of the race for the playoffs. It was a great series for us for sure.

2. Talk about at least two pieces of news.

Obviously you all will want to hear my thoughts on the incident with Jorge in Tokyo. Of course it wasnít great to see, but it could have been a lot worse thatís for sure. Do I condone it? No, but Iíd be lying if I said I didnít like to see the fire. Of course, I will speak with Jorge about it prior to the next series.

With the trade deadline coming up, it will be interesting to see if any other big time moves are made and other big names are moved. Itís a tough one with the way the leagues are, which is why it could make for a big week for the league.

3. Who do you think got an All-Star game snub?

Aside from guys like Aguirre and York getting starting gigs, I felt like from our team specifically, Witte and Ponce were right there.

4. What was your favorite part of All-Star weekend?

Besides seeing four Elks on the team? Probably watching the Coastal stars win big, and doing so on our field.

5. How would you grade yourself at the midseason point?

We are tied with Virginia and Tokyo for third in the league, so I would say that Iím doing pretty good at this point. Obviously thatís for management to determine better, but as long as we keep going this way, it should continue well.

6. Who is your midseason MVP?

Iíd probably say Altimirano or Jayden Smith. Jorge because heís been hitting the ball really well this year, and Smith because he always seems to get these big hits when we need them most, especially early on in the season. Thereís a reason he started for the Coastal All Stars.

7. Talk about your Week 10 opponent.

We welcome Thunder Bay to town. They are one of the few teams in the Heartland who are above .500 and have proven why. Like most of our series lately, it wonít be an easy but with the way weíve been playing, we should have the series in hand.

It's about time we won a high profile series. Man, Witte impresses me, to do what he did against that team in that atmosphere. That was big time.

When I acquired him, I thought heíd be a suitable fill in for us but Witte has proven to be a gem this season. He seems to have a knack for shutting teams down. 5-1 with a 3.34 ERA is great.

The big question this week is Estrada. Iíve had some talks about him, but would you prefer we find a pitcher or an impact bat somewhere?

I would say if we are shipping Strada... we should be getting a really good starter. I'd value that the most.

I didnít hate it. I like seeing that kind of competitive fire in my players. Nothing too crazy to hurt anyone but enough to remind them who we are.
