It's a great honour to be a part of this team and I am keen to get to work. I thank you for the off-season reports, they will be a great help. I'm a little disappointed to see the lack of local talent on the team and the scarcety of Japanese players in the league as a whole. I believe that having a local hero would be great for this franchise. Is there anything we can do to tap into the local baseball system and try to find players worthy of being Samurai Cats?

Not much is known why that is. Rumors of an international pool of players being able to be bid on in the future has consistently been swirling around the league. Perhaps it may come into fruition, perhaps not. It may just be the Japanese professional players prefer to stay local rather then all the traveling that is required in the PBL. Maybe in the future we can set-up a camp of sorts to try and gauge their interest. That's a possibility, I suppose.

That is something we'll look in to in due course. Right now, I think I'd better speak to our coaches. Can you ask Ricardo Beuno to see me, please?
---
Mr. Beuno, could you give me your assessment of our coaches and the areas you think we need to strengthen? I have my own ideas, but I think it's important to make sure we're on the same page.

Kirk, pleasure. As much as I like the guy, I like winning more, so Paulson has to go I think. Bonilla is probably the best hitting coach in baseball and as long as we can hang on to him, we'll be one of the best hitting team in the league, especially with this lineup. We're really one starting pitcher away from making another championship run I think.

Replacing Paulson with the salay we have available might be tough, but I'll get on it. Are there any coaches you have knowledge of or would like me to talk to?

A guy I worked with before the PBL days was Melvin Lara. He works well with all types of pitchers and comes with a decent reputation. Unless you want to target a more specific type of pitching coach.

I think an all-round coach is the right way to go at the moment, so I'll get on with it and we'll speak again soon.
---
Ms. Rai, we're going to let Coach Paulson go but I'd prefer to do it face to face. Can you ask him to see me.
---
Coach Paulson, we are going to replace you as Pitching Coach. The organisation would like to thank you for your hard work with the team up to this point, but as a new GM I'd like to bring in someone new to help elevate our pitching. I'm sorry for the bad news and wish you luck in your future career.
---
That's the least pleasant part of the job. Ms. Rai, can you get hold of Melvin Lara for me please?

---

Mr. Lara, I'm GM Kirk from the Tokyo Samurai Cats. We are looking for a new pitching coach and Ricardo Beuno suggested your name to me. Could you tell me what you've been up to since the two of you last worked together and a little bit about how you can help our pitching staff?

Did some coaching in the minor league system when it was around, worked in Dublin for the London affiliate. After the PBL ended the league, I went back to Peru to do some coaching. I am able to work all pitching type pitchers, rather then focus on any one area. I think I can just get better results out of the staff.

I prefer to have a versatile bullpen rather than one type, so a coach who can work with everyone suits me just fine. We have $1.5MM available for a pitching coach, so I'd like to offer you a contract for 2 years, $1.5MM.

Welcome to Tokyo. I'd better let you get settled as things are a little different in this part of the world.

Mr. Beuno, is Mike Anderson a pitcher we can use or someone who needs to be replaced? The pitcher market is pretty much a barren wasteland out there.

I don't think he needs to be replaced, but we could use an upgrade over him. Our offense is could enough to overcome most subpar pitching.

In that case, I think we're better off just keeping our eyes open for young talent to come in later rather than making any moves to bring someone in now. I like what I've heard of DeVoe and I think I'll replace Britt with Little, from our reserves. Britt needs to be shaken out of his slump and Little seems to have the tools to make an impact as a situational pitcher with upside. There's one guy in FA I like, but I'm not going to tear up the roster to get him, so you can start planning for the season with the players we already have.

Ms. Rai, can you contact Tim Payne's agent for me? I saw on ESPN that Albuquerque agreed a deal with him but no confrimation in the league office. Let the agent know that we are still interested and willing to up our offer for him to play with a winner instead of a team that apparently doesn't actually want him.

I thought you were messing with me, but I looked at my paperwork and you're right. We'd come to Tokyo if you can come to terms on a $3MM deal for Tim, years are up to you.

Couldn't let a player with Payne's talent slip through my fingers. It's been a pleasure, Mr. Johnson.
---
Mr. Beuno, I think our roster is set. Palmeri might take Jordon's spot depending on how they do in camp, unless I can move something around to get them both in the rotation this season. Before I lock in our plans for training camp, I'd like to know how you like to set up your batting order. I'm thinking Chris Beauchemin takes over at DH, unless you think Nate Perrone has a better bat to use there.

Yeah, I think Perrone is the better bat in there right now. Beauchemin has some developing to do before he should get any kind of consistent playing time. As for the lineup, I'd set it like this:

1. Joaquin Rodriguez - CF
2. Guan-xiu Dung - 2B
3. Mike O'Brien - RF
4. Chris Westfall - 1B
5. Daniel Sanchez - 3B
6. Tito Rodriguez - LF
7. Nate Perrone - DH
8. Ricardo Murillo - C
9. Willie Garcia - SS

I'd say our top 3 vocal leaders would be Garcia, O'Brien, and Dung. As for work ethic, guys like O'Brien, Upchurch, and Dillon are tops... also really like our rookie Tito's work ethic.

Welcome to a new season of Tokyo baseball. I was delighted to get the job here and find so many of the essential pieces for a championship team waiting for me. We've made some small changes here and there to improve our pitching but I think you can expect the same, exciting brand of baseball the fans have come to know and love. The goal this season is to get back on our perch as the best team in the PBL and I think we've made a good start to that in our taining camp. We've got elite coaching and players on the team, but we know that we're still going to have to work harder than everyone else if we want to match or exceed our goals. There's no space on this team for slackers and players who thought they could coast along on this franchise's past successes will find out very quickly that I don't tollerate that attitude. Hard work is the difference between a good franchise and a great one, and we expect nothing less than greatness. I'm excited to get going.

Absolutely, and hopefully with some style. I have a couple of questions coming out of camp: What was Tim Payne's problem with the extra training? I was shocked to see that a rookie didn't get anything from a great coach. Also, who looks sharper between Palmeri and Jordon?

I wouldn't hang your hat on the results of the training so much as you could chalk it up as just a bad roll of the dice. As for Palmeri and Jordon, I still like Jordon more because of his veteran presence on the mound. No doubt Palmeri is good enough to be on the main roster though, but then you'd have to wiggle around the finance part.

I'd like to see both in preseason, so you can switch them up a bit every few games. I'd like to have a look at one as a starer as well in a game or two, if you and Coach Lara think one can handle the increased workload.

POST SPRING TRAINING

1. Talk about how you feel spring training went. Who impressed you the most? Who did you feel under-performed?

It was a spring of two halves. The first half went pretty well and the second was a long way below what I expect from this team. Palmeri impressed me but we will need to see big improvements in our pitching during the season. I gave some clear instructions before spring training that were completely ignored, so that didn't impress me.

2. Are you going to make any roster changes before the first series of the season?

Probably, but I will have to have a deeper look at the stats and talk to my coaches before we make any concrete decisions on that.

3. As the season gets underway, where do you project this team to finish in the standings?

I project us to finish top of the standings. That's why I'm here. We will need to tighten up on a few aspects of our game to achieve that, but we have some of the best coaches in the league to get the best out of the team.

4. Talk about your first opponent and the key to beating them in the three-game series.

We have a long trip to Albuquerque to start us off. They have one or two players who can hurt you but I think we have a deeper lineup, so we should be able to play more consistantly through the series. That will be the key to this and most weeks in the season.

"What's your plan to slow down the 3-time Premier Player of the Year, Fernando Tafolla?"

What are they going to do about Mike O'Brien or Daniel Sanchez or Guan-Xiu Dung? They have more players to worry about than we do, so I'm not concerned about Fernando Tafolla.

The American media out here hates how successful our franchise has been.

I'm expecting to give them reason to hate us even more this season. Unless you spotted something I missed, I don't think our batting lineup needs to change much. We might tweak the order down the line, but I'd like to see some real games before I decide on that. Pitching is still an issue for us. I'll speak to Coach Lara in more detail about that, but Palmeri looked ready to me. As for this game, how do you suggest we deal with Tafolla? Walk him and take his threat away?

I think we try and make him get on the hard way. Where he is most dangerous is his speed on the basepaths. I don't think we need to treat him any different.

Alright, let's do that. I'm not going to make any batting changes, so we'll lock in for the first series pretty quick after I've spoken to Coach Lara. Send him in to see me, please.

Coach Lara, how do you rate the pitching over spring training? What changes would you suggest?

We will need Upchurch to pitch better and it will be up and down season for DeVoe. But Anderson looked solid, though I wouldn't bank on seeing those exact numbers.

Palmeri or Jordon? I'm leaning Palmeri after spring training, but you know much more about pitching than I do.

Slight lean for Palmeri. But I do worry that the stage might be too big for him. Only one way to find out though.

Hearing that, it might be better leaving things as they are for now and easing him in once he's more settled and confident in Tokyo. Thanks for the advice. Please send Coach Bonilla to see me.

Coach, I'd like to know which players impressed you the most with their work with the bat during preseason and which ones you'd like to see more effort from.

I think our top bats didn't really take spring training all that serious. I was happy with Tito and Perrone's work though. If they add to the lineup like they did in spring training, we're going to produce a lot of runs.

The big bats had better snap to quickly, as we can't give up any ground early on. I'll keep my eye on it, but I suspect they'll have their heads right by the opening pitch. I won't take up any more of your time. Thank you. I'll come down to training with you to say a few words before we set off for our first game.

Lads, the league hates how successful we've been. Let's make them hate us more. We've got the talent, we've got the coaching. Let's kick some ass.

WEEK ONE

1. Talk about opening week. What did you take away from it?

I took away that we can win a game in whatever way we need to. We came out on top in a pitcher's duel and we blew them away with our bats in game 3. Game 2 was a tight one with some exceptional pitching from both sides, but I'm confident we'll come out on top in those situations more often than not once we hit our stride. We have a deep roster with exceptional talents and I think we're looking good at the moment. I can't wait to get back home to our passionate fans in Tokyo now.

2. Any news stories stick out to you this week?

It's not often that you see a player hitting .700 over 3 games, but I think it's just that Cruz was a very good player on a hot streak. We get a chance to see him up close and to slow him down this week. I'm excited.

3. Do you think there is PEDs in the game right now?

You don't watch much HIFL, do you? I've lost all interest in talking about PEDs. Next question.

4. Talk about your opponent this week. What will you have to improve to take the series?

Austin had a great week at the plate against Viginia Beach, but their pitching looks vulnerable. I don't think that we have to improve on any one thing, but we have to keep our performance level up and stay consistent. We've already seen matchups that looked close get blown up in the third game, so we have to be sure to keep our concentration up and play our best in every moment. As I said earlier, slowing Cruz down will be important but so will hurting them with our own weapons. I think it's going to be a great week and one we'll be happy with once it's done.
