Hola, boss. A much different looking Tokyo team then the past with the moves you made. I know trading a fan favorite like O'Brien was a tough decision, but we got a future ace in Steve Simpson in return, so we just have to hope he develops to his full potential. Even without guys like O'Brien and Murrillo, we still have one of the best hitting teams in the entire league, I'd argue maybe even better on a 1-9 then in years past. I think the bullpen is going to be much improved from last season, which really seemed to be a killer for us at times.

As for Simpson, I don't know if he's ready to be that ace just yet, so I'd maybe even slot him into the #3 spot and giver him a chance to build that confidence with some wins ideally. Another thing is I'd like to get Nesmith up to the main roster so we can develop him better. At the very least, get him some quality playing time over spring training.  Aaron Dillon isn't pleased about being demoted to the reserve roster, so he might be someone we either need to get back to the main roster or maybe look to trade.

Our PR campaign weren't the best and weren't the worst. Dung being Taiwanese, while he appreciated the gesture, felt like he was being confused for recently acquired Japanese player, Koichi Homma. But fans are still crazy over here for this baseball team and are excited for the Honoring Tokyo night that is receiving a fair bit of buzz. We might have a different look, but we still have the same tenacity in season's past and the hunger for another title and keeping this franchise as the measuring stick is still very real.

Welcome back to baseball. We are excited about the season here in Tokyo. We made some difficult decisions for change, but in those decisions, I believe we will see valuable growth for this year and in the years to come. Tokyo is going to get back to the playoffs and continue to be a franchise our fans can be proud of and will be a team that plays with honor.

It was not a decision that was made lightly. I knew it was a decision that would be unpopular, but I believe that we landed two prospects who will become top notch players in Koicha Homma and Steve Simpson. Mike is a Tokyo legend and will have his jersey retired here down the road when he hangs up his cleats...but if Homma and Simpson meet their potential, their jerseys will hang by his many seasons from now. I believe we landed some young talent who are going to do special things.

Dung, Westfall, and Tito are primed for huge years this year in the batter's box. I wouldn't sleep on Homma either. I believe he will have a big year too. In the field I believe Mario Castillo is going to play great baseball for us out in right field.

Nor can I. I feel like we have something special here.

Based on what we just spoke about, do you think I need to talk to Dung about my PR? I know his ethnicity, I just thought that the shirts would sell like crazy and he would be the face of the movement. A new shirt each week by a revered local tattoo artist. I thought that was money. It wasn't a mistake. I was just trying to make something that worked for us. I guess it would kind of be like a GM in Seattle having a PR campaign and calling the guy "The Rainmaker", I wouldn't expect a player to come back and go, "Doesn't he know I'm from Arizona? It's hot there!" If I need to clarify it with him, I'd be glad to. I thought he'd love it and that we'd sell a ton of shirts and such to our fanbase.

That's good.

I have no problem bringing Nesmith and Dillon up. What do you like about them that would help them contribute to our success? If I move them up, who would you suggest I move down? I want the best talent ready at a moment's notice.

Good deal.

Let's talk the lineup.

I have:

Mario Castillo
Tito Rodriguez
Chris Westfall
Guan-xiu Dung
Gary DuShane
Koichi Homma
Joaquin Rodriguez
Willie Garcia
Daniel Sanchez

After training camp do you see any swapping that could make our lineup more lethal?

Not sure Homma is quite ready to be an everyday starter. I'd rather slot Dillon into the lineup either in the OF or at DH. Here is how I see the lineup, but however you want to adjust it, I'm fine with.

1. J. Rodriguez
2. T. Rodriguez
3. Dung
4. Westfall
5. Sanchez
6. Dillon
7. Castillo
8. Garcia
9. DuShane or Payne

Let's talk about our outfielders. Who are the best in the field? That could help determine who I have at OF or DH.

Tito is the best in LF. Castillo is the best in center. Dillon is the best in right. But we could also go Joaquin in center and Castillo in right, if you wanted different options at DH.

I feel like we improved on our pitching, but we struggled last year. I feel it is the best idea to put our best fielders on the field. So for now let's go Tito in LF, Castillo in center, Dillon in RF and have Beauchemin as DH.

Willie Garcia's bat was pretty weak last year. Did the extra training, training camp, and a new coach help him? I know we have to play the games to see the real improvement, but did you see growth in his batting over camp?

I donít think benching Joaquin is the best call, but your the boss. As for Willie, heís never going to be much with his bat, his value is with his glove.

How do you think our rookies Hoppe and Hulme faired in camp? Anything you like in them?

Hoppe is going to be an everyday starter sooner rather than later. I think Hulme has some solid potential, but he's going to take some time I think.

Let's talk about rotation. I'm thinking DeVoe, Anderson, and Simpson and our 1-2-3. I was wondering if we could do something a bit different and have different set-up and closers. Like have DeVoe start, Campbell Set Up, and Peterson close. Game 2 have Anderson start, Little set-up and have Campbell close, and game 3 have Peterson pitch the first 50 pitches or so, then bring in Simpson, and close out with whoever is best out of Rubio, Gaston, or Compton and gave Little or Campbell close. Make game 3 different.

What are your thoughts?

All of that is possible, you just got to determine what you want to get out of spring training. I'm fine with whatever you decide.

1. Talk about how you feel spring training went. What did you learn the most?

I feel like we gave a lot of guys fair looks. I believe we are deeper than I thought we were. Some of our new guys really stepped up and some of our established players really stepped into their roles. I believe we are in for an exciting season.

2. Who would you say was the MVP of your team over the course of Spring Training? Who do you think showed the most improvement or promise heading into the season?

I believe Westfall was our MVP. He played solid with his bat. The guy who impressed me the most was Tito Rodriguez. I believe we are going to see some special things from these, as well as many of, our players.

3. Are you going to make any changes from your initial pre-spring training roster sheet before the first series of the season?

I'd like to talk to my coaches. I think some guys made a case for them to get more playing time. I can look at the statistics all day, but I want to converse with the coach about their play.

4. As the season gets underway, where do you project this team to finish in the standings? Do you think ESPN's prediction had it right?

I believe we will be in the playoffs. I think we have a real chance to win the division and make some noise as a contender to represent our conference in the championship, but we have a lot of baseball to play. Predictions are fun, it's up to players, coaches, and GMs to define destiny.

5. Talk about your first opponent and the key to beating them in the three-game series.

We are going to Austin. Austin has a smart GM in GM Stark and I feel like for us to win we have to play to our strengths. We need to hit the ball where they ain't, and we need to make sure they don't hit the ball. I believe we made great strides in our pitching staff this offseason and I'm excited to unleash them on the PBL.

I liked the addition of Van Gogh and swapping around Monet and Da Vinci really opened up the office. But what brings the rotation home is the Picasso.

DeVoe was lights out, while Anderson and Simpson showed some struggles but glimpses of good stuff. Bullpen was a mixed bag as well, but I think we have the arms to hold a lead more times than not.

What did you think of our little experiment of putting Peterson as the first pitches of the game followed by the starter? Do you think that that is worth investigating or should we just do what has been tried and true?

Okay. So our best bet is DeVoe, Anderson, and Simpson with Campbell as set up and Peterson as closer?

I think Gaston as our long relief guy, then Compton as 7th inning guy, Peterson as set-up, and Campbell as closer.

I like that.

Let's talk about line-up. This is what we had for the first part of training camp...

1. J. Rodriguez (CF)
2. T. Rodriguez (RF)
3. Dung (2B)
4. Westfall (1B)
5. Sanchez (3B)
6. Dillon (DH)
7. Castillo (LF)
8. Garcia (SS)
9. DuShane (C)

I was disappointed in Dillon's .219 batting and extremely impressed with Beauchemin's .500 batting. Do you think moving Beauchemin to DH would be wise?

Also, I'd like to hear your thoughts on catcher. I planned on starting DuShane this year and getting Payne built up, but he played well. Who would you rather have on the field? Payne had good numbers in the batter's box, too.

I do like Beauchemin in at the DH role over Dillon and Payne in at catcher. I think they both earned those opportunities, but we keep them on a short leash if they don't produce. I think Joaquin needs to move down the lineup a bit too, maybe bat him 9th and leadoff with Beauchemin. I think Castillo should play center, Tito left field, and Joaquin right field. That's my input.

1. Talk about opening week. What did you take away from it?

I took away from it that we are still developing our on field chemistry. I'm not alarmed. We made a few changes this offseason. We didn't get a real good look, by design, at our starters during spring training. It may take a while to gel together, but I believe we will.

2. Should PBL consider postponing games or cancelling the season due to COVID-19?

If our players and staff can be safe. I'm all for playing games. If there is a chance that there could be an issue to harm them, then I encourage waiting. Baseball is great, but safety has to come first.

3. Are the balls juiced or was the influx of hitting and runs scored a week one fluke?

One week doesn't make a season. It was impressive to see, but we will have to get further into the season to see if this really is a statistical anomaly or a sign of a change to the game.

4. What are your thoughts of playing games without fans in the seats?

The health of our fans and our players has to come first. Until this is under control, I believe this is best. The Commissioner has worked tirelessly to get TV deals and fans can enjoy our games at home and our players can enjoy playing the game they love in safety.

5. Talk about your opponent this week. What will you have to improve to take the series?

We face a hungry Mexico City team. If we are going to win, we have to slow down the runs against us. We have great bats. We need our pitching and fielding to come alive.

It's been one series. I have a lot of confidence in our starters and relief staff. I'm not going to spaz out after one series, or multiple series. I believe in the guys we have and I believe we will pull it together.

That was rough. While we got swept, it was a closer series than a 3-0 series usually looks. We were in each game. Plus we out hit them in each game, we just made too many mistakes.

What would you attribute that to? Chemistry, youth, talent?

We have talent. Some of it untapped talent that will take time to see it work for us, rather then against us... but Austin is also a really talented team with arguably the best starting rotation in the league to go with powerful bats. I think the fact we hung around them all weekend is a good sign this early, we'll be better as the season progresses I think.
