1. How did the offseason treat you? What's the one thing you can hang your hat on as the reason this season will be a success?

The offseason went well. We had a very good draft, picked up some solid free agents, and best of all we re-signed Candradipa. He's one of the best players in the world. We'd be fools not to hold onto him. I think the season will be a success because we will develop our young players into the stars of tomorrow, while also having a competitive team that will fight for a playoff spot. The future, and present, is bright in New Orleans.

2. What was one thing you wish you could've done to improve your team.

I probably should have had us end up with fewer shortstops on the roster...

3. How do you envision your team finishing this season? Give us a prediction.

Right in the playoff mix. It will be a hard fight, but I think this team will be playing postseason baseball this year.

4. What player on your team would you say will make the biggest surprise impact?

I think Jaden Harris is a guy that could have a big year that's under the radar. He's got talent, and I think it will show this year.

5. Any positional battles you'll have your eye on during spring training?

At the moment, no, but I will listen to what our coaches say and whether they think we should shake things up before opening day.

Feeling good about this season, Skip. Think we can do some big things...

I completely agree with your team analysis. I wasn't as aggressive in the bullpen market as I needed to be. I'll keep my ears and eyes open for anyone shopping their guys.

With what we have currently, do you like Ely better in the setup role than Varnadore?

No, I think Ely is better in a role where he can be used for more innings than a typical set-up role would indicate.

RPs are pretty slim pickings. Looks like the top available arms are Edwin Rosales and Rich Oceguera. On the SP front, Chris Roque and David Ayala look to be the best available. Maybe we could convince one, or both, to come in as RPs...

Any of those guys seem like they could help?

I dont know either of them too well, but Roque has the most familiar name. Not sure hes ready to be a bullpen guy full time or not. Might have to think about a trade maybe too.

Ill see if I can sign one or two of these guys now, and we can explore trade options as the regular season begins if need be. Thanks for the input, Coach.

-

Lets talk to Dana Boras.

-

Dana, Id like to talk about bringing Chris Roque to New Orleans. Ill be upfront with you. It would be for a bullpen role. His numbers from last year indicate he had most of his appearances coming out of the pen. He could potentially get some spot starts, but his main role would be as a reliever.

Would he accept this role and come to the Krewe on a 1 year, $3 million deal?

We were hoping for a starting opportunity, but since you are in the ballpark of what Roque is worth, hes willing to help your team in the bullpen.

1. What did you learn the most about your team over Spring Training?

I think we're building some depth for the future of this team. We've got mutliple guys at quite a few positions that can contribute to this team, with a nice mix of veterans and young players. I'm quite pleased with what I saw in Spring Training.

2. Who impressed you the most on your team?

Perkins was a nice surprise. He hit the ball well. Mehta is a guy that we expect to be great, but it's good to see his bat is warmed up going into the regular season. And all of our pitchers showed flashes of brillance.

3. Is there anything you wish you did differently in your spring training approach?

I think our approach was good, and our coaching staff did a great job preparing the team for the regular season.

4. First series of the season, where do you feel your team holds the advantage against your opponent?

We play the defending champs right out of the gate. They had a rough offseason, and I think we're ready to jump up so I see a series win coming for us. I think our pitching will be the key for us.

1. Talk about your first week on the diamond.

Some good, some not so much. Game one Van Hook was great, but our offense struggled and some late runs given up doomed us. Game two we fell behind early and couldnt catch up. Mehta played well. Game three was a good team effort. Carter did well in his debut, and Mehta and Harris gave us big games with their bats. Would have liked more wins, but we had positives to build on.

2. Talk about your team related news and at least one other piece of news.

Its nice to hear Ely is taking his situation in stride and is ready to compete. That will make him a nice asset for our team this year.

Shocking to see VB lose all 3 games, but Felix is right. Relax. That team is great.

3. How important is it for your team to get off to a great start?

Its important, but Id rather finish strong. I want you to see improvement throughout the year, and that will lead to success.

4. Which player on your team are you looking at to have a bounce back series?

I think Dung will get some hits in the upcoming series and make our offense stronger.

5. Talk about your upcoming series.

Jacksonville is like us. A team trying to compete now while building for the future. I think our current roster is a bit better than theirs, so if we get good efforts from our three starting pitchers we can win the series.

No secret that Indy was carried to their championship by that impressive pitching duo of Stover and Altmeyer. I thought we competed well, struggled at the plate a bit too much, but overall, not a bad first week.
