Ah yes, this is a great day for this franchise. A great day for Austin. And an even better day for the state of Texas. I say this with enormous amounts of pride... General Manager.... Gravedigger!

Thank you, Pearl.

Let's talk to Coach Yeager.

-----------

Coach, it's a pleasure to finally meet you. I look forward to the two of us bringing a title to Austin this season. But to achieve that goal, we need our roster sorted out.

My initial thoughts are that we are good with the pitching we have, but need to find some better bats. What positions do you see as the biggest need for an upgrade?

While we have heck of pitching staff, we are pretty lackluster on offense which could cost us. We could honestly upgrade everywhere outside of Ricky.

What style do you like to play? Get on base and run? Hit the long ball?

I favor a pretty conventional playing style. Don't take a lot of risks and let our talent control the outcome of the game. I prefer to let the game breath then suffocate it with irrational decisions.

Id there anyone youd like to see as our hitting coach?

Mike Rhodes is a guy that worked in our minor league system when it was around. I think he'd be a nice fit for us here.

I apologize for the personal slight, Spencer. Or Mr. Johnson if you prefer. I was working off an old list without agent names. It is my mistake.

As for doubling the offer, it only seems fair considering how this transpired. That is absolutely a deal.

Excellent. I'm sure we'll talk at some point during the season. Have a good night.

-----------

Let's get Coach Yeager back in here.

--------------

Coach, this is the starting 9 I'm thinking:

C: David Reyes
1B: Gabe Heard
2B: Salvatore Huertas
3B: Keith Driscoll
SS: Josh Hirko
LF: Dan Sisto
CF: Dean Broyles
RF: Ricky Cruz
DH: Justin Blanton

Do you disagree with any of the starting picks, and what do you think our optimum batting order would be?

Good evening. It's always exciting to start a new venture, and this certainly will be exciting. Austin is a great city, one that deserves a championship team. That's what I plan on bringing with the Drillers. The changes we made might not be considered earth shattering by most, but we are set up to be a successful team starting right now. I'm feeling quite positive entering the season, and look forward to watching our team navigate its way through PBL. Time the Drillers win a title...

Are there any questions concerning the team entering the year?

I'd say early on most expert pundits think you're hitting a weak point with the strong pitching staff. Any reason you didn't look to upgrade there in the offseason?

I think we're going to need to rely on our pitching to carry us this season. We obviously have Cruz, but we'll need some bats to get hot and help Cruz carry the load.

Yeah, I thought we had a pretty good deal in place, but it didn't work out. We will definitely have to rely on timely hitting to manufacture runs and hope our pitching holds up...

1. Talk about how you feel spring training went. Who impressed you the most? Who did you feel under-performed?

I think spring went well. Not because of our record, but the experience we gained heading into the season. I don't think you can look at statistical performance too much, but Ricky Cruz' numbers were hard to ignore. He crushed the ball. As for the other side, I don't think we had anyone perform badly enough for me to worry before the season starts.

2. Are you going to make any roster changes before the first series of the season?

I doubt we will make any changes, but I think as a General Manager you always have to be open to doing what's best for the team. If making a move will help us win, then we'll make a move, but I don't envision doing anything.

3. As the season gets underway, where do you project this team to finish in the standings?

The media had us in last place in the projections, but I think we can win this division and fight for a Championship. If you don't go into the season with that as your goal, you're in the wrong line of business.

4. Talk about your first opponent and the key to beating them in the three-game series.

Virginia Beach is a talented team. They've got a good core of hitters at the top of their lineup, but our pitching staff is better than theirs. It should be a battle of strength vs strength, but I think we should come out with a series win.

In this day and age if anyone improves themselves someone will imply its because of PEDs. I believe Ricky worked hard this offseason and bettered himself naturally. Hes a young guy. Natural progression should be expected.

Indeed. Things went very well.

Did you see anything that warrants any changes?

Nothing to make me want to change anything at this moment.

1. Talk about opening week. What did you take away from it?

One solid win in the middle of two struggles. Pitching wasnt as good as I expected, and hitting was sporadic. We need more consistency across the board to start winning series.

2. Any news stories stick out to you this week?

The absence of two GMs is concerning. We were all brought in to help this league become better and thrive. Not showing up for work doesnt help that cause.

3. Do you think there is PEDs in the game right now?

Ah, yes... the Ricky Cruz question... Ive seen zero evidence of PEDs in our locker room, and I hope other teams can say the same.

4. Talk about your opponent this week. What will you have to improve to take the series?

Tokyo is a good team. We need to improve in all phases to come out of Japan with a series win.

We should've won that series. And I'm getting tired of hearing the Ricky Cruz accusations.

Me too. He's a great player. It should be left at that.

We certainly had our struggles this series, but I still like where we're at overall. I'm thinking we stay the course and don't make any changes just yet. What do you think?

I'd like to make some minor tweaks to the lineup.

Ok, that works for me. You know the dynamics on the field better than I do.

What did you have in mind?

I'd like to move Heard down to the 9 spot and move Driscoll, Huertas, and Hirko up a spot. Or substitute Blanton in for Heard at first and have him bat in the 6 spot. Either way works.
