Thank you, I appreciate the information. I'd like to talk to our Manager, John Karbowski. Could you send him in please?

*****

John, thanks for your time, and it is great to finally be meeting you. I'd like to pick your brain about a few things, so that we can be on the same page moving forward with this team. What sort of philosophy do you subscribe to out there? Do you like to dominate via pitching or via hitting?

Also I'd like for you to tell me what is, in your opinion, our top 3 weaknesses at present.

Hey there boss. I'd say I favor hitting slightly more than pitching, but it's fairly close. I prefer having a strong line-up because that has been the trajectory of the league to have success. As for our top three weaknesses, I'd say in order it'd be second base, a third starter, and a third outfielder.

We're in a unique situation right now where we can cut any player or Coach loose, without the normal monetary penalties that come with that sort of move. We have any "must cuts" in your eyes?

I'm all for trimming the fat off this team. Chris Greene, Jon Cisneros, Mike Turner, and Keith Schelicher getting cut wouldn't cause any tear shed.

Consider it done.

Let's talk about the Coaching staff. You happy with the team we have, or are there conflicting ideas among the staff? Or is there someone that you simply feel isn't up to the task?

Very content with Batson as our pitching coach, but Zaragoza could, as the big boss would say, swim with the fishes.

It'll be taken care of.

Now that we've discussed what's wrong with this team, let's flip the script and talk about what's right. Who are the stars of our team from hitting, fielding, baserunning, and pitching perspectives? We have anyone worth Coaching up on the reserve roster?

On offense our stars are the rookie Torrez and C-Rod. John Powers and Sawtelle are the stars of the pitching staff. Our speedsters are Torrez, Kramer, and Shoup. Torrez and Shoup are going to be our best fielders. I think we have a few guys worth coaching up on the reserve roster, yes. I'd recommend using your scouting wisely.

COACH JON WAYMAN

Was in the college ranks before the PBL, then was the coaching staff in a supportive role for the first four seasons of the PBL in Omaha before heading back to take a manager job at Illinois this past season. Took them from a 13 win team to a 25 win team and a regional bid.

Vivian, it is a pleasure to meet you.  I'd like to discuss your client Robbie Verkaik.  I've got a slot open for an outfielder, and I'd like for it to be Robbie.

Full disclosure; I'm going to use the preseason as a sort of 'try-outs' for the starting positions on this team.  Robbie will be given equal opportunity to be an every day starter for this ball club.

That being said, I'm offering a 2 year, $3MM deal.

Just so happens that I saw Dean Broyles secure a $4MM deal. If you can match that contract, we'd sign right now. If not, we'll hold out for someone that will.

Let me save you a headache - I worked with Phoenix Jr's old man in the HIFL before his death. If the apple has fallen anywhere within sight of that tree, then there is no 'why'. There's only madness there. Don't worry about it for another moment.

That said, I appreciate you being all in with us this season. That's the sort of professionalism I knew I was getting when I pursued you.

I won't keep you any longer. Go get acquainted with the clubhouse and the team. And again, welcome.

Karbi, sorry for ushering you out and then calling you back in like that.  I needed to act fast to sign Sean McCord while all the other GM's were asleep at the wheel.  What do you think about that signing?

Also, with the new pieces I've brought in, what would be your ideal starting lineup for the club?

McCord is a good signing. Still has life in his arm and is a great locker room guy. As for my ideal starting lineup,
I'd go this lineup vs right handed pitchers:

1. Verkaik - DH
2. Rodriguez - LF
3. Torrez - SS
4. Shoup - CF
5. Mack - 3B
6. Galvez - 1B
7. Delgado - C
8. Arqueta - RF
9. Kramer - 2B

And this lineup vs. lefties:

1. Torrez - SS
2. Shoup - CF
3. Rodriguez - LF
4. Galvez - 1B
5. Verkaik - DH
6. Delgado - C
7. Mack - 3B
8. Arqueta - RF
9. Kramer - 2B

With a starting rotation of:

1. Powers
2. McCord
3. Nakayama

One question I had for you.  From my football experience in the HIFL, I'm used to not expecting too much out of a majority of my draft picks year one.  We have a minor league system in place there to give those kids some playing experience, and some time to coach them up a bit.

That brings me to Nakayama.  He was our 2nd round draft pick this year.  It is too early for us to stick him in the rotation?  Would having him on the reserve roster mean that he sees no action at all and essentially sits for a year?  I'm just trying to understand the system more than anything here, with Nak being the example I'm using.

That's a good question, I do think Nak can start this season for us, mainly because I don't feel we have better options. He'll learn as he goes. As for the reserve roster, not quite sure how they will progress. This first season of the GM era will teach all of us a lot moving forward, if you know what I mean.

Our captains last season were Powers, Galvez, and Mike Turner. Since you released Turner, I would probably lean McCord as the the third captain.

Don Powers, I have league office on the line, unfortunately.

Good evening Mr. Powers, this is Natasha Owens, assistant to Commissioner Quist from the league office. I am calling to inform you that according to your offseason roster sheet, you have gone over budget on your reserve roster by $1.5MM. Because of this, you are fined $2.5MM on your reserve roster. You have until preseason lock-in to get back within budget. Good luck on the season and please be more careful in the future.

Don Powers... Don Leone will not like this. Here is your team sheet.

Hello everyone.  I'm sure most of you know me from my FBL, NBL, and HIFL stints, but for those that don't my name is Mike Powers.  I am proud to be the 1st GM of the Chicago Mafia.

We have a fantastic nucleus of the team, including our 1st round draft pick Edwin Torrez, who I have no doubt will be a human highlight reel out there.  I was also able to bring in a few new pieces to this team, including pitcher Sean McCord.  I am very excited at the upcoming season, and can't wait to get started.

Let's open the floor for questions.

What can you tell us about the league infractions you occurred on the offseason?

Math is hard.

GM POWERS CHUCKLES

In all seriousness, it was all my fault. Basically when Sean McCord became available, it upended my planned budget and I neglected to fix it.  I'd like to apologize to Don Leone and all the Chicago fans for my carelessness; it will not happen again.

You have a small mess to clean up. I'll let you get to it.

Miss Quinn, does Don Leone want to give me a piece of his mind in person, or should I just start making moves to right the ship?

I think you're fine to move forward with making some players "disappear".
