Fair enough. I'll talk to you later Karbi.

*****

Can I speak to Daniel Sanchez please?

*****

Daniel, just wanted to belatedly welcome you to Chicago. You've already contributed and helped us win games since you got here. Super happy to have you as a part of the team.

Happy to be here sir. I had a great time in Tokyo, but now hoping to find the same kind of success here in Chicago.

1. Talk a little about your last series.

Pitching, pitching, pitching!  Relief pitching to be specific.  Man is it frustrating to go into the 8th and 9th innings with comfortable leads, only to allow the opposition to claw back into it and win.  We let two great offensive performances go to waste out there, and it is a damn shame.

2. Do you feel the league should force Chicago to sell to Mr. Starr and his ownership group?

I realize that you all are expecting to get a big scoop from me here.  I'll let you in on a little secret though.  While it is true that being the GM of a sports franchise means that you are one step removed from ownership, what the general public and media fail to realize is that that one step might as well be a mile high.  I have zero inside information on the legal case involving my boss....former boss....soon to be, former boss?  Further, I have not met with Mr. Starr or his representatives.

In answering the question about whether the league should force the Don out.....are you kidding me?  Look, I know this phrase has been abused lately, but this is America people.  Innocence before guilt?  I just feel that the league should exercise some restraint, and wait for more facts.  If it becomes clear that the Don did what he is being accused of doing, then the league should facilitate the sale of the club.  Not before.

3. With 5 weeks to go, are you where you want to be?

A couple of games out of a wildcard spot, so absolutely not.  Our pitching, most especially our bullpen, need to nut up and lock down some of these leads we have to get us into the 2nd season.

4. Discuss your next opponent and the player your most worried about on their team.

We get on a long flight to Tokyo next to face the Samurai Cats.  They are in rebuild mode, and have moved most of their best veteran pieces - including Daniel Sanchez to us - before the trade deadline.  While they don't currently have one single player that I fear, baseball is a game of inches.  A hit here , a walk there, a well timed RBI - you know what happens.  And we simply can't afford it to happen.

You and me both Karbi. Can you send Pryz and Ball up to see me?

*****

Gentlemen, thanks for coming. It's no secret that our biggest struggle this year has been in the bullpen. We can't seem to hold down leads, and it's killing us. We're going to shake things up and hope for better results. Effective immediately Josh you'll be the closer, and Pryz you'll be used in relief situations.

Just a few series left, and we need to make up ground if we want to play postseason ball. Can I count on you two to roll with these changes and give it your all?

1. What are your takeaways from your recent series?

We took the series with 2 out of 3, but this late in the season we are playing for our postseason life.  When we get a series that we, on paper, should sweep, then by god we need to take all 3 of those damn games.  We played great, C-Rod and Verkaik each made the highlight reels, which is awesome.  We need to keep up this consistency, and to pick it up a little bit to turn a 2 out of 3 into a clean sweep.

2. Discuss any news regarding your team.

I haven't met with Mr. Starr or any of the potential ownership group.  I wish I had an update to give you all, but I am literally just as in the dark as you all are.

3. What news stories stood out to you this week?

Another fight?  Really?  Do we need to establish league-wide anger management training or something, because this is getting ridiculous!

4. What is one area that you need to improve upon if you are to come away with a series victory this upcoming week?

Consistency.  We have shown time and again that we have the talent to beat any team in the league.  We just need to be consistent about it, and not take games off.

Any other questions?

Big series against Thunder Bay and with them banged up in their starting rotation, we need to fucking take advantage. We'll see how the team responds when we are fighting for our playoff lives, like you said. We saw them do it last season, but we're going to need a repeat performance.

1. Talk about your series this past week.

A series loss that we could not afford. Powers looked great out there, we had plenty of offense. We need killer instinct and bullpen help. Badly.

2. Talk about the news regarding your team.

Edwin Torrez is the best player in the conference, if not the league. I donít blame pitchers for being afraid of him getting on base, he reeks havoc.

3. Discuss any other news that you want to touch on.

I couldnít care less about whatís going on in the league right now. Our season is circling the drain, and itís painful to witness.

This weeks series would be a good time to get that sweep. Winning only two out of three will probably still have us on the outside looking in when the season finishes.

1. Talk about your feelings heading into the last week of the regular season.

Do or die.  We need a clean sweep and a little bit of help to make the playoffs.  This team is likely to be rebranded in the offseason, so this is the last chance for the Chicago MAFIA to make noise, and make a run.

2. Discuss any other news that you want to touch on.

We are laser focused.  No time for anything else right now.  Thank you.

*****

Karbi, this is it.  We need a sweep, and even then we STILL need a little bit of help.  Is the locker room focused?

GM POWERS SPEAKS TO THE GATHERED TEAM IN THE CLUBHOUSE.

The calander may say this is the last week of the regular season, but make no mistake about it - these are the playoffs. We need to win for any chance, slim as it may be, to stay alive.

But it's really about more than that. There will be a new ownership group in place soon, and by my estimation there are exactly two people in this clubhouse whose jobs are safe. Torrez, and Powers. My job is not safe. Karbi's job is not safe. Neither is any of the rest of the coaching staff. Or, realistically, any of your spots.

We are playing for our season, we are playing for the playoffs, we are playing for the Mafia name and legacy, and we are playing for our spots on this club. Not trying to pile on the pressure, just making sure you all know the stakes.

Let's go out there and show that we deserve to be here next week, and next season. Because I believe in you, and I know Karbi does too. You guys have the talent to do it, we've seen flashes of it all year - we need to harness it, and do it NOW.

Let's make the rest of the league sleep with the fishes.

1. What was your favorite team moment this season?

We've not too much to celebrate.  We came one game short of forcing a play-in game, finished with a losing record, lost Lefty, lost the Don....it's been rough.  It was nice to bring back Mike Turner and see him do well once again in a Chicago uniform.

2. What was the worst team moment this season?

I think I covered that sufficiently already.

3. What is one thing you'd change about a decision you made at any point this season.

I'd have been much more aggressive at the trade deadline.

4. Who was your team's MVP and why?

Edwin Torrez.  He is a League MVP candidate, so no doubt he is the team MVP.

5. Which player disappointed you the most and why?

The bullpen as a whole let the team down.  We lost far too many late leads, and holding on to just a pair of those would've resulted in a playoff berth.

6. How would you grade the job you did this season?

I didn't completely screw the pooch, but this year was a step back.  D+ I suppose.

7. How would you grade the job of the coaching staff this season?

My staff did the absolute best with the talent they were given.  They all get A's.

8. Who is your pick to lift the Premier Cup?

How do you argue against the Tide?

******

Karbi....we came so fucking close.

We just ran out of damn steam. We really need to re-work our bullpen next season and find a third starter. We have the hitters, we just need the pitching to compliment them.

Mike Powers... it is a pleasure to meet you. I'm sure you are wondering... about job security. And things of that nature. What I can tell you... is that your job is safe for next season. I do not... officially... take over as owner until the off-season has begun for each team. At that time... you and I can exchange... in more meaningful dialogue.
