San Diego Swan

Owner: Tom Gaslamp
Team Assistant: Sandy

Team History:
Tom Gaslamp is an actor, comedian, and casual sports fan.  His acting career has faded so he started the San Diego Swan to give him something to do to pass the time.  He's a laid back owner that likes the notoriety of owning a team because it keeps him relevant.  He is a competitive guy at heart and is ready for his team to make the leap into the playoffs.

Season 1: 23-19
Season 2: 15-27
Season 3: 20-22

Knock...Knock...oh sorry, was working on a new joke for my next stand up gig.  Listen up, this team has been competitive for the most part, but we have yet to make the playoffs.  I would really like to do that.  If you think you're the right person for the job...APPLY!!

GM Bennett, the pleasure is all mine. I have spent the past several years coaching in another professional basketball league before deciding it was time for a new challenge.  We have one of the better coaching staffs in the league and I look forward to turning this team into a true contender.  As far as our team is concerned, here is my analysis:

Aaron McNeill at this point in his career, is a veteran presence off the bench.  The end of the bench that is.

You can put Teddy Barksdale in the same category as McNeill.

Walter Lebarrie has a nice shooting stroke, he's a hard worker and his outside shot has shown steady improvement.  He makes it difficult for for opponents to stay in front of him with his quickness.  He is a player that thrives in a set offense, but he is a capable scorer at 17.5 ppg last season.

Maurice Wilkerson is there with McNeill and Barksdale.

Reggie Cuyler can dominate in the post when he wants to.  He's a good passer for a guy his size and is a sound, smart defender.  He's incredibly strong which helps him take contact down low.  A decent starting power forward.

Corey Jackson is another veteran, but one that produces a little more than the others.  He's a solid role player that should see some minutes.

Ryan Smallwood is extremely explosive and loves to dunk the ball.  He's a good shot blocker, despite his height, and he lives in the post.  Solid starter at 14.9 ppg and 12.2 rpg.  Might be better served at the PF position if we can a more traditional center.

Josh Cullen is another undersized guy that we play at the center position.  Has a great 12-15 foot jumper with excellent touch. Great IQ and makes smart plays.  He's young and will get better with time, but like Smallwood, might be better suited at the PF position.

Bobby Searcy...another veteran guy that can gobble up a couple of minutes off the bench.

In case you haven't caught onto the trend...we need to get more youthful to really establish future success.

Sounds like we have an okay team at best, coach. With your analysis and me looking at the sheet I'm gonna be frank with you coach...Our best asset looks to be Smallwood. But with that said Cullen & Lebarrie seem look to be valuable assets as well. Cullen's youth and potential to get better is promising. Smallwood would be a player I wouldn't want to let go of with a tight grip. Cullen and Lebarrie I'd look to keep as well but if push comes to shove you may see me ship them off.

At the same time coach I am a patient man and I don't mind rebuilding this team into something we both as management and coaching staff envision for the future. I look to make this team a tough team to deal with on both ends of the floor.

Unless we can get ourselves premiere and legit Center we might have to play Smallwood at the 5 and Cullen at the 4 for the time being. This early to tell tell without going through the draft and free agency but that's what I see us at for right now coach.

The talent is definitely there, it's just trying to find the right mix.  If we have to live with Smallwood and Cullen starting together, I am good with that.  We just need to find some bigger bodies for depth rotation which will allow us to mix and mingle them at times on the floor.

Coach....If I were to try and improve the coaching staff if at all possible, would you be opposed to replacing Coach Jones & Coach Minor?

If you'd like to keep the coaching staff as is I'm okay with this. Just wanted to explore the possibility if you were willing to do so.

I'm fairly new to coach, I've coached in Italy for the past three seasons and am trying to break into the SBA.  I'm 40 years old, so I'm young and look forward to coaching for a long time.  I'm a pretty good judge of potential in players and good at developing them to try and reach that potential.

Italy was good, I busted my ass and learned from some good solid coaches.  I believe offense is my bread and butter...you want honesty so I will give it to you.  I'm not the best offensive coach at the moment, but I study the best on a daily basis and pick bits and pieces from them.  I believe in couple of seasons I will be one of the better offensive coaches in the league.

Thank you for being honest with me Coach. I believe if you were to come here and join our coaching staff you will be able to learn from 2 great basketball minds in Coach Bannister & Coach Oliver. You will also get an opportunity to help develop or team as you wish to do. We are trying to build a playoff caliber team here in San Diego and in order to do that I need a capable coaching staff to make sure of that.

Coach I'm going to offer you a 3 year deal worth $1.2MM per season. If you accept this offer and interesting in joining us here in San Diego I will make the necessary arrangement as soon as possible to ensure you officially become an San Diego Swan.

Mr. Rosenhaus the pleasure is mine. As you already know we have acquired your client Mr. Mueller. We did so knowing the risk of taking on Mueller's huge contract. I'll be honest with you coach the production numbers are what we loved when making the trade but not the contract....

Mr. Rosenhaus I'm calling you today to see if we can possibly restructure this contract. Right now looking at our team we have guys very similar to Joshua that at making 5x less and no PR. Mr. Rosenhaus in order for us to continue to grow a quality team this season, we're gonna need more money and PR on our books to give us that flexibility.

As of right now looking at the roster we have, I'd like to move Smallwood to the 4 and that would mean Joshua & Josh would be competing for the starting position at the 5. At the same time I think he could provide a great spark off the bench. It would be great to have a veteran like Mueller on our roster whether he was starting or not. Whether he's the starting center or our 6th man I believe our coaches and myself see him get some quality minutes to help us compete this year. That's our goal here in San Diego. We want to compete. I want to see us in the playoffs fighting for a chance to become champions. Joshua can help us achieve that wherever he stands I believe.

I was think we keep him for the remaining 2 years but dock the pay from $17MM to $4MM and no PR. You have to look at at my perspective Mr. Rosenhaus. Looking at his age and the other players who are similar to him is going to dictate how this goes. I don't believe he should be making as much as our best player in Smallwood. I'm willing to give him $2MM more than what Searcy & Jackson are making due the level of production I know he can bring to us. Also...This will help us in free agency tremendously.

Steve places you on a brief hold and retrieves a paperclip out of his desk drawer.  He digs the paperclip into his left ear and moves it around a bit.  He pulls it out and looks at it, confirming what he already knew....his ears are not clogged.  He tosses the paperclip into the trash and continues the call.

So you trade for my client, knowing full well what his salary was.  You ask for a restructure, which is not necessarily a bad thing....but then you insult him by asking him to take a $13mm pay cut.  No, thank you.

CHUCKLES AT THE HINT OF ATTITUDE FROM THE AGENT

I'm willing to hear your counter offer Mr. Rosenhaus but the fact of the matter is we are not going to be paying Joshua the same amount of our best player and 10x more than the man who may be starting over him. Nobody is insulting your client but thinking a club has to over pay a aging talent is insulting to the organization itself. You have to wonder why Memphis agreed to trade him for the four players we did.

I'm willing to work with you on this and come to a conclusion that works for both parties involved. If we cannot come to this conclusion together sir then I will do what is best for my organization. We want him here. Understand that. If we didn't I wouldn't have bothered to call.

Who knows why the traded him....but I know you traded for him because you wanted him.  So don't try and put this on some other team wanting to get rid of him.  We came into this with an open mind to restructure, but your approach to the situation has been awful.  1 year, $12mm is our offer.

My approach has been far from awful but say what you may Mr. Rosenhaus. I am here to negotiate with you not to get in my feelings over a simple disagreement within the said negotiations.

Doing 1 year for $12M is a step in the right direction. Would you be willing to make it $10MM if you are intent on having him keep a double digit contract?

Drew, hello nice to finally meet you face to face.

My name is Wesley Bennett, but people have made it happen to call me GM Bennett instead. I just wanted to call you up here and officially welcome you to the San Diego Swan. Our goal is to become a playoff caliber team that can make a push for the championship. One of the things we need is a point guard who can be a general out the court and make sure everything runs smoothly. You had all the key components to help us achieve that goal. I'm so proud we were able to draft you in this years draft Drew and I can't tell you how excited I am to see you ball out there this season.

You're gonna make a huge impact on this team, this city and the entire SBA league. I can already feel it, Drew. I really can.
