Cheyenne Bison

Owner: Cowgirl Jane
Team Assistant: Farmer Joe
Team Colors: Tan & IndianRed

Team History:
Cowgirl Jane's family owns the largest cattle farm and horse stable in the United States.  Her husband, who she met in college, knows nothing about the family business and can be considered a "city boy".  However, his wife's wealth and beauty kept around long enough to marry her.  For her part, she decided to start the Cheyenne Bison to give them something to do together that they both could enjoy.  Only problem, being a sports fan doesn't correlate to running a successful sports team.  The Bison have been abysmal the first three seasons of the SBA and need some serious help. The bright side is the team's record has improved each season.

Season 1: 6-36
Season 2: 15-27
Season 3: 17-25

Farmer Joe, it’s a pleasure to meet you and a pleasure to be part of the Bison family. Thank you for the team information. Now, could you get me in touch with Coach Hall please?

—————

Coach Hall, pleased to meet you. I’m Gates, the new General Manager around here. I’m looking to turn things around into a consistent contender here, so let’s get right to work.

Can you tell me about yourself and your coaching staff? Experience, specialties, that kind of thing.

GM Gates, its' a pleasure to meet you as well.  It's great to be paired with a proven winner.  As for me, this is my first year as a head coach at the pro level.  I've spent the past nine years as head coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Euroleague.  I've been wanting to make the move back to the states and luckily Cowgirl Jane was looking for a coach. As far as my coaching goes, I'm an offensive guy.  I like to run plays out of different sets.  I believe running plays as opposed to an uptempo style helps eliminate turnovers and wasted possessions.

Coach Henderson is an offensive guy as well, but he also works wonders on the clipboard drawing up plays when a big one is needed.  He is master strategist.  Coach Bergman is great at evaluating the potential in our players and trying tap into it to make the player better.  Coach McKie doesn't do any one thing great, but is a solid coach.

I do like the offensive approach to things, so that fits well.

Let’s look at the team...what do we have to work with player wise.

Overall, we have a solid bunch.  We have decent height and length, but could use a bigger center in my opinion.  But here is my individual breakdown:

Jason Ferguson is a 3-time All-Star and a walking triple-double.  Last season averages were 31.2ppg/10.7apg/8.9rpg.  He's an excellent shooter with good shot selection and range.  He is a player the defense can't leave open around the three point line.  Excels with the ball in his hand at the top of the key, which is why he's a great fit for my offense.  He protects the ball and makes good decisions.  For a point guard, he crashes the glass with reckless abandon.  Has quick hands and reacts to the passing lanes.

Sam Holcomb is young and still needs to develop, but his work ethic isn't the greatest.  He has a high release on his shot, but for a shooter he doesn't elevate all that well.  He is super quick and can take almost any defender one-on-one.

William Green can create his own shot off the dribble.  He has an ever improving mid-range game.  He has a nice change of speed with the ball in his hands and is above average ball handler.  Only real issue is turnovers.

John Linton has good range and accuracy and does well creating off the dribble.  He anticipates passes and creates a ton of steals because of his on the ball pressure.

Deshawn Cummings is a good scorer with underrated shooting ability.  The man tries to break the rim every time he dunks which creates excitement for the fans.  He's a good rebounder and a good defender who is long and athletic.

Flye Mason made the SBA All-Rookie 1st Team last season.  He's shown the ability to create his own shot, he squares to the basket and gets vertical.  He is your prototypical post player. He's tough on the boards and is a workhorse on the defensive side of the ball.

Sounds like we have some good pieces to build off of going forward and some room to play with.

As we start looking at free agency and the draft, what are some of our more pressing needs right now? Things you know we need.

I think we need to upgrade our starting small forward position.  I believe Linton is a good candidate for sixth man, if not that, then he should at least see some decent minutes as a rotational guy.  Also, we are a young team for the most part so I think trying to bring in some quality veterans will help guide this team to new heights.  I think both Cummings and Mason can start, but if you are able to acquire better at those positions I have no problem moving either of them to the bench as they would give us a great presence on our second team.

With that being said, our biggest need, despite position, is scoring.  We were next to last in scoring last season.  We need some more firepower to help Ferguson.

Thanks for the insight. I will make sure to leave some room to grab some veterans if Free Agency has any worth picking up, but that time will come eventually. I am always looking for scoring as well, so that is something I will keep an eye on.

One thing I wanted to ask...Ferguson. He's 31 and has been in the league for 12 years. Is he showing signs of wear and tear or is he still going strong? Just wondering how much of an investment I should make in his back up, if I need someone pretty good or just good enough.

He's still going strong.  He's got two years left on his deal so I don't know if he plans to retire at the end of his contract or continue to play.  That will be something we will need to discuss with him at a later time.  But I think the next two seasons he will still perform at the top level.

What about the others? Any big injuries to be wary of?

No injury concerns to be wary of.  I think we have a solid starting point, just making sure we try and find the right fit between the draft and free agency.

I agree with that, coach. Alright I will let you go, I’m going to introduce myself to the rest of the staff.

Joe, can you send in Coach Henderson please?

————

Coach, pleased to meet you. Coach Hall tells me you are an offensive coach who is a whiz with plays. I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about yourself, your experience, and how long you’ve been here in Cheyenne.

GM Gates, pleasure to meet you as well.  I have been coaching for the past 20 years in various professional leagues around the world.  This is my first year with Cheyenne and I'm hoping eventually leads to head coaching job somewhere.  I am an offensive coach who loves to run the offense in a half-court set.  I believe it is the best way to control the game.

Let me ask, as you look at the team, what do you see missing to help the offence run the way you’d envision it.

I think the biggest piece other than scoring is getting more rebounding.  I don't know if that means getting another body, or trying to get Cummings and Mason to get down in there and bang.  It's bad when your leading rebounder is your point guard.

That's a fair point, coach. Not good when the point guard is the teams leading rebounder.

Thank you for the insight, coach. I will let you get to things.

----------

Joe, can you send in Coach Bergman

----------

Coach, I know we're working toward the draft, but I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and get to know you a bit better. Coach Hall tells me you are great at working with the younger players and getting the most out of them, which is great to see in a coach.

Can you tell me a bit about your history? How long you've been coaching, how long you've been with Cheyenne, that kind of thing.

GM Gates, it's a pleasure to be working for a proven winner.  I used to be head coach at UCLA at the college level for a while and then left coaching to do some television work.  But I just couldn't stay away from the bench and returned to coaching.  Being a college head coach has really helped me to be able to relate and communicate with the younger guys and really get the best out of them.

I'm even in both, but if I had to choose I would say offense.  I differ from Coach Hall in the fact that my preference is an uptempo, fast paced offense that runs.  Despite the difference in philosophy it has it's advantages because if we need a change of pace he knows that I can handle and insert myself into the fold to help the team.

Excellent.

What I was thinking of would be 4 years at $18 Million with $3 Million in PR. Keeps him here long term as one of the figureheads and leaders with Ferguson. This deal would start right away, so he wouldn’t have to wait to get the extra cash. It’s not a huge raise, I admit that, but it gives him a bit of a bump, and likely still gives him time to get a huge deal after that.

PR Campaigns:

PG Jason Ferguson - $3 Million
Tag Line: “The Bison Legend”
$2 Million - We will run a series of commercials, with each one highlighting a different aspect of his game: shooting, passing, defense etc. The commercials will start with a clip from a big moment in his career, followed by a voice saying “He is unstoppable. Because he is...The Bison Legend.” Each commercial will have a different line (relentless, unstoppable, driven, clutch, things like that). When the voice over starts, the shot will switch to Jason Ferguson standing in his uniform, arms crossed, in front of the state flag.
$500K - We will host an event at a Children’s Hospital, where Jason Ferguson - and other players - will be on hand to meet some of the kids. There will be giveaways for the kids and their families.
$500K - Replica Jersey Giveaway - one home game we will have a Ferguson replica jersey giveaway. The first 10,000 fans will get a replica jersey.

SG William Green - $2 Million
Tag Line: “The Golden Flash”
$1.5 Million - Ad Campaign (Print/Radio/Small Commercials)- We will play up Greens talent, his competitive nature and his ties to Kent State. Fans will get to know a bit more about him in this manner, and learn about his hunger to bring more gold to his resume, and to Cheyenne. The small commercials will highlight his ability a bit more, showing what he can do on the court.
$500K - Golden Flash Bobblehead Night - one home game in the middle of the season will be noted as Gold Flash night where we will be giving away bobble heads to the first 10,000 fans.

PF Mario Thurston - $3 Million
Tag Line: “The Bison Warrior”
$1.5 Million - Commercials will run introducing Mario to the fans. The first series of commercials will be snippets of clips of him playing basketball, some of his highlights of his career. They will finish with a shot of Mario holding the ball in his hands with a voiceover saying “The Warrior Has Arrived”. The second series will showcase even more of Mario, focusing a lot on his ability to crash the boards, fight in for a lay up, showing how he is a warrior out on the floor. Because he is the Bison Warrior.
$500K - Meet and Greet - We will host a meet and greet with Mario at a team store, where he will be doing some signings and generally just being welcomed to the Bison family.
$500K - Super Mario T-Shirt Giveaway - Even though he is the Bison Warrior, he is also Super Mario, which is why we will have a giveaway of Super Mario Thurston T-Shirts. On this night, the first 10,000 fans will get a shirt.
$500K - Thurston T-Shirt Jersey Giveaway - Similar to the above, we will have a Jersey T-Shirt giveaway one night, where the first 10,000 fans will get a shirt.

GM Gates, our Season 4 team sheet is attached.  Excuse me for rushing a little bit, but I forgot to mark the success of the PR campaigns. They all went well. As a reminder, you signed a 3-year, guaranteed deal with the overall goal of making it to the playoffs.  For Season 4 my wife has given you the goal of having a .500 RECORD.
