While all these candidates are deserving as such...

Nelson Lai should be the Defensive Rookie of the Year and this is why...

Only he and Polamalu are playing on playoff teams.

Not that it should eliminate Burger and Thomas, but let's be honest... those two defenses we're on the field a lot more than Charlotte and Seattle's were. With that comes slightly inflated stats.

He missed 1 damn tackle! 1!

He's a linebacker built in the Larry Stevens mold, where he can do a bit of everything. Sure tackler. check. Can get to the QB. check. Can play in coverage. check. Can help in run support. check. Can create turnovers. check.

Nelson Lai is deserving of this award.

Yup, 1 missed tackle for a rookie with all of that production is incredibly impressive. Lai gets my vote.

To continue my feud with GM Big Pussy I voted for Polamalu as I support Samoans ... and he had a damn good year.

I'm a hard numbers kinda guy, so I went Burger.

Lai and Burger have very similar numbers though.

Same number of tackles.

Burger had one more sack, one more TFL, 3 more FF, and a safety.

Lai 5 more PDs, 2 more picks, 6 less MT

Lai also played on a better team with better players around him.

So being a hard numbers guy, unless you value the FF's more than INT's. I don't see how you can go Burger over Lai?

They are very similar. But Burger has more sacks, fumbles,  and put points on the board with safety. He gets the slight edge for me.

6 more missed tackles means potentially... extended drives, scores for the other teams. FF is 1 thing, but were they all recovered by Music City? I can tell you Lai's three interceptions gave our offense the ball.

Lai shows his versatility at LB by doing everything good.

I hear your argument, and have no defense. All I can say is that my gut values Burger a hair more than Lai.

I don't get the "he played on a good team" argument. That means he was probably up against weaker players because his teammates covered the better ones. Besides, the South East was far tougher than the North West. Lai's numbers came against weaker opposition.

I've got Lai. To me he's the best combo of run stopping, pass rushing, and pass coverage.

I went with Burger, put on reflection I think I should have gone with Lai. I just eeked it to Burger with the FF's and safeties, whilst overlooking the missed tackles. Still a tight pick between the two.

EDIT: Discovered you can remove the vote. Switched it to Lai.

Burger and Lai are pretty similar but Lai plays on a better team and in the weaker conference so that makes Burger's stats more impressive to me.

As much as I'd like to vote against Jon out of spite, Lai is the best. He has to play against some of the high scoring offenses in the league twice a year...and despite that missed just one tackle? He should have missed way more, but he didn't.
