Val, could we get in touch with Marlin Frisk of the New York Champions in regards to our open defensive coordinator position?

Thank you for taking my call Mr. Frisk. This comes at the recommendation of our new Head Coach here in Winnipeg Larry Wright when we started to brainstorm potential coordinators. I prefer at this time looking to run a 4-3 defense and so it made a lot of sense trying to see if you were open to having this interview. Coach Wright believes you didn't have a fair shot in your first run in the HiFL and we both agree that you can bring a lot of experience to our defense.

If you're interested in potentially moving back to the HiFL, I have a few questions I'd like to ask you from your perspective starting with why didn't things work out in Tuscon the first time around? There was a lot of talent on that defense and it seemed like Kirk was pretty quick to move on.

It was a classic case of New regime, new coaching staff.. I'd love to leave this NYC staff now that GM Kirk is here running the show.

I'd come to Winnipeg and bring my knowledge of both sides of the ball for 2 years at $7MM per year.

I wouldn't blame you wanting to leave a team ran by GM Kirk, and that contract proposal certainly seems agreeable Mr. Frisk. Let's do it!

I just want to hear your vision or analysis for this defense. Obviously, we'll get a lot more in-depth feedback after camp, but I'd appreciate hearing where you'd prioritize improving this offseason, or what players you're excited to develop.

There's a lot of unknowns surrounding the group, especially with just moving on from Bruiser Elliott. We were able to get some prospects with upside from Atlanta in Dale Pulley, Rex Mundy, and Marvin Swanson.....but on paper, there's not that game-wrecker. Our LB Corps has some strong veterans in Knapp and Capps. It's also been a priority to lock down and extend Mooney and Clancy in the secondary.

While I'm not overly familiar with Marvin Swanson outside of his raw power he showed at the Combine last year, but I do like Mundy a lot.  The Backer corps is definitely anchored by two veterans, but I'd like to see us add a younger guy for the future early on in the draft, one of the first few rounds ideally.  I love Mooney and Clancy, they are building blocks.

A speed rusher would be really helpful, even if its a raw one we only use on 3rd downs right now, but I'd look for a pass rushing DE somewhere in the draft.

Well we got a decent chunk of money to spend wisely in free agency and 13 picks in the upcoming draft, so I hope we can fill out this roster so you can not only maximize their potential but have this defensive unit surprise the rest of the HiFL.

Enjoy the rest of your vacation Coach, we'll touch base at training camp. Welcome to Winnipeg!

Val, have the players had any medical checks yet with our staff, or is that waiting until training camp? Charles Clancy suffered an injury at the end of the season with Tulsa, I was wondering if there has been an update whether he's projecting to be ready for week 1?

That's excellent to hear. Can't wait for camp.

While you're here, could you get me in touch with our new QB, Patrick Owen, please?

--

Patrick, welcome to Winnipeg! We're very excited to have you here and I think you're going to be a perfect fit for our franchise. I know the media right now is talking about how much we gave up to bring you here to Winnipeg and I think once they see you out there in an Arctic Fox uniform they'll understand why we hold your ability and potential in such high regard in this building, and I'm excited for yourself and Coach Wright to meet in training camp.

Will is interested in coming to Winnipeg, but if you want to sign a guy who deserved to go in the first three days of UFA, you need to pay him.  We're looking at 2 or 3 years at 4.5MM per season, you can split the money into whatever breakdown tickles your fancy.

PR CAMPAIGNS

(Patrick Owen) (Primetime) [500k]
Winnipeg paid a perceived ‘kings ransom’ to bring Patrick Owen from Michigan to Winnipeg. Owen has yet to feature in a regular season HiFL game, only playing in the pre-season and minor league. His talent is undeniable and to promote how high the organization is on Patrick, he’ll feature in a 30 second commercial spot before our first primetime game [Week 2] of the season. Tagline: “They said I’m not ready for primetime. They said a Canadian football team would never be here in primetime. We’re here, and primetime is our time!”

(Scott Berg) (Ice Berg) [1M]
Scott Berg is Canada’s favourite HiFL’er and the Ice Berg campaign will be a promotional bus that will drive from coast to coast in Canada starting in PEI and going until Vancouver Island promoting the Arctic Foxes as Canada’s team and getting Canadians excited for their first HiFL franchise. The bus will be shaped like an Ice Burg with a Scott Berg ‘fathead’ on the side. The PR team will hand out allotted free tickets and merch.

(Harold Lloyd) (The Human Highlight Reel) [500k]
How’s this man is still not talked about? 4th in receiving yards, 2nd in receptions and a brand new contract to boot. A 30 second, national commercial spot during ‘Hockey Night In Canada’ will showcase the various ‘wow’ catches Harold made last season in Tulsa. Included will be an announcer clip from last year’s Tulsa/Michigan Week 6 game saying “Another big play from the Human Highlight Reel, Harold Lloyd!”. Finish the commercial with Lloyd in an Arctic Fox uniform and promoting the new few home games.

(Charles Clancy) (Child’s Play) [250k]
A billboard campaign around Winnipeg, with Charles Clancy dressed up like the Chucky doll holding a football in front of his face. Tagline: “Throwing My Way? Child’s Play”

(Rex Mundy) (Flex Like Rex) [250k]
Being one of the strongest players in the HiFL, Rex Mundy is a player you won’t have to ask twice to showcase his physique. Flex Like Rex campaign will be a social media challenge, encouraging fans to start working out and asking those that are confident to show off their best pose with the winner(s) getting home game tickets and Arctic Fox jersey of their choosing.

(Christopher Knapp) (Knapp Time!) [250K]
Using his PR campaign from last season as our source of inspiration, however this season the campaign will be reflected on the free rally towel that will be handed out at every home game. The towel will be in Arctic Fox colors and will be designed to look like a blanket, accompanied with a big number ‘53’ in the center. Fans will be encouraged over the PA to get their Knapp time towels in their air when the defense is facing 3rd/4th down.

MUSICAL LICENSES

1. (Raise A Little Hell) (Trooper) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NowqPTLAtAk)
A Canadian classic, Troopers iconic tune will be played at the beginning of the 1st and 4th quarters.

2. (What The Fox Say) (Ylvis) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jofNR_WkoCE)
Will be played during TV timeouts

Hey GM Cory, I don't know about you, but I'm ready for some football!  Flashing lights, movie stars... We're going to make a lot of dreams come true!

Anyways, our PR was successful across the board, nothing epic, but nothing flat either, so good work!

ESPN The Magazine is really down on our team... like sheesh.. 19th in offense and defense... not a single A grade for any one position group.  B's for QB, FB, WR, T, G, C, LB, SS, and P... C's for the rest.

Bunch of Jerks...

1. Use three words to classify how your off-season went and explain.

"Laying.The.Foundation. Inheriting a Tulsa team that didn't have much direction or roster stability and then having our own issues with players and the move to Canada...the challenges have been there but I believe we have the pieces to build and grow with for the future. It started with building what I think is one of the best coaching staffs in the league, then locking down some of the top talents who joined us from Tulsa, and then being kinda short-handed during the draft with Winnipeg not even being a franchise during last years mid-season Showcase I thought we did a solid job with our limiting scouting hitting on our early picks and moving some picks for a young and talented QB to groom. I'm very satisfied with how our first off-season went."

2. Coming out of training camp, where do you rank your team in the division, in the conference, and in the league?

"Listen I know as a new franchise the deck is stacked against us but with teams having to go out of their way to come into Canada, from customs to the culture change it's going to be paramount that we utlize this homefield advantage which I think, especially in the winter months is going to be brutal for opposing teams....not much compares to the winter in Winnipeg. There's a lot of talent in the Mid-West but I think we're going to surprise some teams in our division. As far as the west and the league as a whole we want to not only gather the support of an entire country but put on attractive and competitive football in our teams first season."

3. Do you have any position battles planned for the preseason?  Which jobs are up for grabs and what do you hope to gain from the preseason games?

"Absolutely...without competition you're team wont have the fight required to compete at this level. In particular, free safety and defensive tackle are spots on the defense we're still trying to find the best combination for and offensively I think we're pretty much set but with some nice depth at receiver and running back, regular-season snaps can be earned during the preseason."

4. List one victory and one failure for you personally this off-season as the GM of this franchise.

"Victory was the coaching staff I was able to assemble. From top to bottom I think we have a staff that is perfect for a new franchise and building a new culture here, as well as maximizing the talent we do have. As a failure, I think I could have looked more into defensive depth. I mean there are only so many players you can sign and with existing contracts that we inherited from Tulsa it's all a process and we're going to need guys to step up and become leaders this season."

"Your team's owner has been very well documented as a man who appreciates taking a player and giving them a second or third chance and turning their career around.  Who on this current roster do you believe fits that bill?"

"Patrick Owen fits that bill to a T. I understood after my interview for this General Manager job with Mr. Master's what he wanted in his team and prioritizing guys getting a second chance here. Patrick had some issues before he entered the league but growing and learning from your mistakes is a big part of developing into a leader and someone who can become a role model. We made a big move to acquire him from Michigan, knowing his past and that from an ownership and front office standpoint there is no better place for Patrick to be playing his football."

I'm excited as well....to be back in my home country and to have this much excitement everywhere you go is....unreal almost.

I know for myself it's going to be hard to not have personal goals for this team to be beyond realistic expectations. I'm coming from Orlando where my objective every season was to make HIFL Title runs to here in Winnipeg where we really need to lay a strong foundation as a top priority.

We gambled on Patrick Owen being our guy.....I liked what you had to say about him from the scouting report. How do you view his ceiling? We trained him as much as any player this offseason and while optimism is high where do you think he's weak at? I feel like you're the perfect guy to push his buttons but I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to help.

I love his make up. He needs to keep learning in the film room and get some experience that he didnt get by not playing in college, but he has the athletic tools to be a star, and I think I can get him to that point.
